DUNDEE United manager Craig Levein has expressed a hope that he won't be forced to bear an additional cost on top of the £5,000 fine he was handed for criticising a referee last season.
Controversial refereeing decisions have stalked Levein at Dundee United, and the latest one occurred in the second half of yesterday's 1-1 draw with Celtic at Tannadice Park. Charlie Richmond's decision not to award United a penalty after striker Roy
O'Donovan had been felled by Gary Caldwell provoked fresh outrage in the home stands. It follows a string of incidents last season where Levein felt United were on the wrong end of bad judgment calls by referees, specifically Mike McCurry in a game against Rangers at Ibrox in May.

Levein was fined £5,000 by the Scottish Football Association for his furious outburst after the 3-1 defeat, and was warned about his future conduct. Although he kept his emotions in check yesterday, he did refer to his previous battles with the authorities. Richmond was later injured in a collision with Celtic player Shunsuke Nakamura, and had to be replaced by fourth official Iain Brines.

"I just hope for the sake of Scottish football that it wasn't because I spoke out the last time a similar thing happened," said Levein, who also stressed he would continue to stand-up for himself, and his team. Levein added that he fervently hoped it was not a decision motivated by a desire for revenge on the part of officials upset by the manager's previous outspoken comments.

"Everyone tells me it was a stonewall penalty," he said. "I like Charlie and think he is a decent referee. At least it was only one mistake inside the penalty box today. I have to put that down as an error, because the alternative does not bear thinking about. I will continue to speak out, but I have to put this down as an error. And we will see what happens next week."

Levein's circumspection was perhaps helped by United being able to salvage a point from the game, with substitute Francisco Sandaza levelling with 11 minutes left. Paul Hartley had given Celtic the lead shortly after half-time.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan described the game as a "good advert for football", and evaded offering an opinion on the penalty incident by accusing O'Donovan of having already fouled Caldwell.

And why Rags FC won two cups last season?

Shocking decision to turn down the penalty claim for the Caldwell/O'Donovan incident. United had two other good penalty claims too, for Hesselink wrestling Wilkie and for handball against Caldwell, plus another claim for hands against "Basketball" Caldwell, who also handled the ball three times in vital positions in the final Old Firm game of last season without being penalised. Of course, Rangers have had some fortunate decisions too, as have other clubs. However, if the law of averages exists, Celtic are due a bit of payback this season - then stand back and watch certain of their fans explode. :0)

Big Vinegar should be brought to task. Holding a shirt last week to earn a penalty for his team, and against United holding a man and not getting a penalty against.

It couldn't possibly be a ref conspiracy. That only happens to the other side of the OF, right?

Don't remember minty's poodles saying much about the stonewaller Hearts were denied at Ibrox on Saturday when the score stood at 1v0...there wasn't much gnashing of teeth over that incident which wasn't even mentioned in some of the more dedicated laptops' reports.

Celtic also had two very good penalty shouts turned down in this match...must've slipped the laptops' tiny minds to mention either of them.

Still, twas ever thus and ever thus shall be in Scotland...The Champions' success rankles at the heart of the body politic.

A better performance from the champs. There was, in sharp contrast to the paint drying spectacle at Ibrox on Saturday, a bit of entertainment in this match, and that's what fans hope to see when they shell out.

Some of Nakamura's play was quite sublime : his vision, passing and movement beguiling the Dundee U back four time and time again...some of the passes he threaded through for Hinkel to run on to were very pleasing on the eye.

On another day, both Jan and McDonald would have tucked one of those chances away, and three points would have been heading for Glasgow.

A draw at Tannadice these days is most definitely not a bad result.

Well if you don't think it's a penalty to stop the ball going into the net using an arm, you obviously have very little understanding as regards the grounds upon which a penalty can be awarded, and it's rather late to be explaining so basic a rule.

Feeble stuff. Bougherra had turned his back and the ball was blasted against the back of his upper arm or shoulder. Very clearly unintentional.

If Bougherra's arms were at his side , he' needing to lose a bit of weight because he must have about a 66 waistline....fair enough , had it been darcheville, I might have given the benefit of the doubt.
10

Helter Skelter,

It's an interesting idea that by averting one's eyes to the rear, one can use the arms to to stop the ball going into the net.

Helter skelter gets the pelters.

Even the Hearts goalie said it was not a penalty mate, let it go.

I take it from the lack of defence of Caldwell's performance that you think it was a penalty too?

And yes, a great performance by the Chumps. Keep it up and the league will be at Ibrox before Xmas.
12

Helter Skelter,

18/08/2008 01:06:51
I think the rearrangerz will get skelped up at tannadice, as they generally do whenever they are away from Ibrox against a top 6 club.

Look at how inept they were against the jambos, how dull and grey there play was.

Dundee U are a plucky bunch and did very well to hold The Champions to a draw...the mind boggles as regards what they'll do to the rearrangerz when the latter start there laborious build up play at 2mph.
13

Helter Skelter,

18/08/2008 01:08:37
Bougherra, even though a rearrangerz player playing at Ibrox, cannot use his arms to prevent goals, and the idea that he can provided that he turns his head away is just preposterous.
14

Helter Skelter,

18/08/2008 01:13:09
Is there any truth in the rumour that Walter intends to sell McGregor and then use Darcheville as a goalie ?

The story goes that if Darcheville the rocket man puts on just a few more pounds, his €rse will cover the entire goal mouth, and he need only plank himself down on the goal line, €rse in the air, in order to GUARANTEE clean sheets for ra rearrangerz.
15

Why don't some of you "experts" actually go and read the FIFA laws of the game before you come on here pontificating and blessing us all with your weegie wisdom on hand ball calls?

Eejits.

"Celtic also had two very good penalty shouts turned down in this match...must've slipped the laptops' tiny minds to mention either of them."

The only tiny mind here is yours - filled entirely with a single thought that you lot had two decent penalty calls turned down. Even some of your most fervent hail hailers would have to laugh at you over that one.

United will get f*** all from the west coast whistler cheats this season, because Levein dared to speak the truth. Last game of last season at Tannadice - against Celtic - the referee refused to shake Levein's hand at the end of the game. And we're meant to believe these guys are impartial and objective?

And because United will get a raw deal, the clubs around us - Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell, Killie, Falkirk etc. - will benefit. Which is maybe why every one of them - bar Jimmy Calderwood - said f*** all publicly in support of Levein when things needed to be said after the Ibrox cheatscapade. They know Levein's right but they don't want to risk getting on the wrong side of the blazers.

The S.F.A. must be one of the most corrupt organisations in world football.

Well I've looked through about 8 different UK newspapers (broadsheets - not the usual weegie red top bog roll) at accounts of yesterday's game. Every single one focusses on the non-penalty call that went against United. NOT ONE made ANY mention of ANY claim Celtic might have had for a penalty at any point in the game.

So the obvious conclusion must be that there is a massive conspiracy not to report on legitimate Celtic penalty claims. It would be absolutely ludicrous to suggest that Celtic didn't actually have any legitimate penalty claims in yesterday's game.

Wouldn't it?

"Rangers don't get decisions all the time like Celtic"

I saw the match today and must say it was a good performance by United.

The midfield that Levein has put together for peanuts more than held their own against the tics midfield.

He has really put a decent side together since going to Tannadice.

The big Spanish striker, once fully fit will scare the hell out of a lot of SPL defences.

As for the penalty that was not given, I stated before that I thought Vanhesseldonk holding Wilkie in full view of the referee was a bigger penalty claim, than the Caldwell incident, only my opinion.

As a Gers supporter I would have to say that the OF clubs DO SEEM to get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to dodgy decisions. Again only my opinion.

How do Celtic get a penalty for nothing against St Mirren, while Dundee Utd get nothing for a blatant foul?

I was at almerston yesterday for QoS v Thistle and can exclusively reveal, there are more than two Glasgow clubs who get the benefit of dodgy refreeing.

Stevie Nicholls was so pro-Thistle on Sunday one exasperated Doonhamer yelled: "Haw ref - were ye too embarrassed tae pit oan yer pink shirt?"

Good game though, both teams should be in a very keen promotion mix at the end of the season.

and so it continues...the media have brainwashed the gullible and willing into accepting that Celtic benefited from a number of favourable decisions last season...so the high profiles ones...against Aberdeen when the whistle (wrongly) sounded and the Aberdeen player stuck the ball away after the defence stopped...well that was balanced up by Celtic having 2 goals wrongly chopped off in that same game (not really mentioned by the old media) ...against Motherwell when Celtic scored after a debatable corner decision... well Motherwell also were awarded a corner when it probably should have been a goal kick - decision evened up in the match... against St mirren it was a free kick as the player barged Naka from behind to play the ball... and on Sunday against Utd it should have been a free kick to Celtic not a penalty to Utd...but let's ignore the facts

What a cracking game. Good football and great atmosphere.

I thought United played very well throughout, starting by containing Celtic, and then going on to become more of an attacking threat. Saying that though, we also had some decent chances in the first 45.

On today's evidence, Nakamura is about the only Celtic midfielder that I would swap for any of the United midfield. Even David Robertson, who seems to be the new scapegoat for United supporters since Kerr has moved on, had a very effective game.

Buaben, Sandaza and Conway (great to see him back) were all excellent for United when they came on.

Of course, I've just concentrated on United there, but Celtic were good as well.

And the less said about the penalty non-decision the better. As a United supoorter it really is hard to believe that these can all be put down to errors though...

They ALWAYS get the 50/50 decisions. The Old Firm rule says refs will side with them.

From the match report this piece "This agitated, finger-jabbing bodypop has now become a ritual dance among the tangerine legion" And WHY?

Because "refs do the strangest things" when faced with giving a decision against Rangers or Celtic...the ref was hopeless I'm sure he was carried off suffering from extreme embarassment or his conscience had got the better of him

and BTW he was shocking all the first half as well so this incident was just the culmination of a set of unbelievable decisions....the icing on the cake..

Your piece makes intersting reading but to suggest that there is a media campaign against celtic is plain daft....the ref yesterday gave every decision for celtic, not even the 50-50 ones..he and his linesmen worked well together and when they couldn't give a decision that favoured celtic then just ignored the issue...e.g. foul play (Scott Brown), obstruction and dangerous play (VoH every action)and Paul Hartley (5 or more dissents before he had his stroppy fit!)
47

Helter Skelter,

Anyone remember Nakamura's penalty shout at tannadice the night we won the league ?

Verysimilar to the claim y'day...there was some contact, but not enough to bring the player down.

Naka was booked...and although I'm biased I thought the contact on that occassion had a good deal more purchase on it than the one yesterday.

It was a case of oooo! Caldwell's left a leg in, let's go doon like a sack of spuds...and he was already on a yellow card...so the arabs should think themselves lucky.

Overall, I thought Dundee U deserved a point, but consider that was down to poor finishing by the champions and an incomprehensible turn in the balance of play during the last 15 minutes...we had this match by the scruff of the neck and somehow contrived to end up with a draw.

I though for the first 30 minutes, the play was very even, but towards half-time, the Champions were beginning to control the match .

Watched the game yesterday - good match.

Hesselink on Wilkie was also a stonewall penalty. Whatever way you look at it Celtc are lucky to even have the 4 points they do. Im not going to make much of it however as we (rangers) will no doubt be on the end of beneficial decisions over the season.

I think you lot actually look inept up front. You probably wont agree but i have never been a fan of Hessilink and would take 7m for him in a shot. McDonald also looks out of shape and not sharp.

The squad we had pre the Cuellar sale IMO had no chance of winning the league but the additions of Mendes,Adu and Davis have left it wide open i reckon. Not being in Europe is a huge blow but has hugley increased our chances of the title.

Mendes in particular is exactly the type of player we have been needing for over a year and i think he will be a great signing.

Are you happy with the Celtc squad and do you think you have enough for the league and in Europe?

I watched Dundee Utd Vs Celtic yesterday. I have to comment that I was not at all impressed by either team. If this pair are the favourites for 2nd and 3rd then I think that the reinforced Super Gers could win this season's SPL by a record margin!

I'm a big fan of Jan. If there is any truth in the £7m Hamburg rumour, I hope that Celtic turn it down unless an available replacement of at least the same quality (fringe player in the dutch international team or better i.e. equivalent thereof)has been identified.

It's late in the window, but rumours of Hamburg's interest have been on the go for a week or two and if Lawell has been able to find a suitable replacement at a good price then I'd be ok about that.

But there has to be something in it for Celtic : either we make a profit by selling Jan for £7m and buying a replacement for around £4m, or we buy a better player for around £10m by adding £3m to the take...otherwise, I'm not interested.

My prediction that Scott McDonald will be a one-season wonder appears to be correct.

None of the players bought by Strachan can be classed as "blue chip".

As for the squad, I'd like to see Maloney back and a new left back.
If we get that, I think we'll be fine.

Once fit, I'd like to see Strachan try Maloney and McGeady on the flanks wirh Naka and probably Robson in the middle.

I think Naka has great vision and the ability to make passes with inch perfect accuracy.
If he was sitting in the middle, his arc of fire is far wider and his options far greater.

Boyd will outscore VoH every times if he plays anywhere the same amount of games. As for only scoring against lesser teams - VoH has 1 OF goal and 2 in Europe from his two seasons in Scotland. He also cost 10 times what Boyd did.

I notice you left Laffs out - 1 goal and 1 assist in his two games so far. More than all your strikers put together.

I also think we will be able to at least match your midfield with the new additions. This was the dept that won you the league last year. I think Mendes will prove to be a more accomplished midfielder than any of yours.

I thought United got a rough deal from the referee in the Hamilton game too, although in that case it didn't hinder us as we were mince. But after Richmond's iffy performance and then for Brines to come on and do much the same seemed dubious to me. As Levein said, for the sake of the Scottish game, let's hope that he isn't being punished for what he said i.e. telling the truth that McCurry and Clark were incompetent and/or bottlers. Richmond HAS to be added to that list as it was either a penalty or a sending off for O'Donovan!

The only saving grace is that we've hopefully got 3 referees off the blacklist in 2 games, assuming they'll only cheat us for their first game of the season each of course! Surely even SPL referees wouldn't dare do us over the next time we compete with Rangers in a match...

Panic stations at Parkhead.

2 points dropped already & there now after for Sean Maloney. Hilarious!

Whose next Simon Donnelly?

Rangers blue chip signings will win the spl at a canter.

Were back!

Just helped myself to the highlights of the Dundee Utd V Celtic match. I don't think that you'll see a more clear-cut penalty award this season than the Caldwell trip. "Stonewall" doesn't begin to do justice to it.

Two games in, and without 2 huge penalty favours from referees, Celtic would be sitting on one point and questions would be asked about WGS's lack of transfer activity. As for the two handball incidents, I have a little sympathy for Caldwell as I'm not sure that either incident was in any way deliberate. To deflect by mentioning the Bougherra incident though is just foolish. You'd have 5 penalties a game if you started blowing for anything as innocuous as that.

As a postscript, must be a relief for Celtic to finally offload Gravesen, although I reckon that it has probably cost a cool seven figures to persuade him to leave CP.

Still, never mind, wee Shaun's coming back.

McGregor making an excellent penalty save is a "slice of luck" is it?

Fine, every time Boruc pulls off a save this season we'll call it a slice of luck rather than any excellence on his part.

Get serious.

Is you impeccable source the same originator of the Deco story?

Or did you just read the DR. like the rest of us.

If offered 7mil for Vanhessledonk the tic would be wise to take the money.

So much for the league being wrapped up by Xmas.

As far is Hinkel goes I hope WGS keeps playing him every week. Uniteds left side ripped him apart time and time again.

So the financial details were not released.

That's a bit surprising.

When Celtic signed Gravesan I thought oh sh*t they have signed a real player. Same when they got Bellamy on loan.

Apart from those two, Celtic have never signed anyone I'd rate highly.

No idea what happend to Gravesan but Celtic seem to have ruined a good player.

Loovens will regret signing for Scotlands 2nd best.

14.5 mil spent and counting, it clearly shows a lack of commitment and desire by Murray.

Why do I bother!!!

Correct.

The fact that SDM had a buyer lined up and pulled out at the eleventh hour because it wasn't right for Rangers DOES endear him to this Rangers supporter.

As for him wanting to sell up? He's given us 20 years of his life, and has made no secret that he would like to hand the reins over. We know that he'll continue to do his best while he's still there, though, so no worries.

Murray wanting to sell the club is not news.

As Bemused said he has put in 20 years which is more than enough.

In these tough global financial times it will be difficult to find a buyer. Especially for an SPL club.

BTW. thanks to Carlos and his agent for that escape clause.

BE, 88

Look again, BE, at the DU penalty shout and open your eyes and your mind this time.

Yep, there was a tackle, and yep, there was contact, but note that the strikers decision to go to ground was taken just after the contact. He dived. Credit the ref: he got this one absolutely right.

Unlike Stuart Dougall. Now, if you're genuinely concerned re refereeing, can you please look at this clip and then explain to us why the Ref handled obvious dives so differently?

--- Broadfoot embarrassing dive - free kick
--- Boyd embrarrassing dive - free kick (led to goal)
--- Mika embarrassing dive - no free kick - booked - led to being dismissed.

It's all on the vid.

My cat could have saved that penalty at Falkirk...a poke of chips would not have looked out of place in Higdon's hands as he slumbered up to the ball.

McGregor had time to chat up three burds before he had to get down and save....you will not see a more poorly aken penalty kick this season I tell you.

I'm worried that my grandchildren might look at that penalty strike and judge the standards of the day by it.

We've all seen that clip with Charles Kennedy playing indoor skittles in a nursing home....Higdon made Charles look majestic.

#48 You really take the biscuit, don't you hundit?

You asked SOFBTRC not once, but TWICE (posts #35 & 38) about other teams who have suffered from dodgy decisions in matches against Rangers.

And what do you do? You don't like the look of his answer so you hide behind a pathetic reply of "andy who..?"

SOFBTRC (and anyone else) deserves better than to have you insult their intelligence like this.

If you're not man enough to give a straight and fair response then maybe you should do your disappearing act once again...
