Published Date: 27 September 2008
CSABA LASZLO suffered the heaviest defeat of his Hearts tenure as Dundee United finished comfortable victors, their bullish attacking style proving too much for the visitors to combat. Goals from the impressive Craig Conway, Jon Daly and Scott Robertson secured a convincing victory on a day when Hearts simply couldn't get going.
Craig Levein, the United manager, has a fine record against his former club and this showed no sign of abating at Tannadice. Although Laszlo's side produced some cohesive passing movements, they toiled to control the physical threat of strikers Daly and Fran Sandaza, whilst Conway's industrious midfield play and intelligent free-kicks were instrumental in the home win.

A goal down at the interval, Hearts emerged hoping to gain a foothold in proceedings after a disjointed first-half display. However, United increased the pace to finish off their opponents, who had Eggert Jonsson sent off on 75 minutes for two bookable offences.

It was difficult to say whether the week's wages saga had affected the visitors' performance but, with that settled, they would have been expected to produce more for the travelling support.

Hearts, with the same side that defeated Inverness last weekend, survived an early fright when Daly's near-post header bounced back off the crossbar on five minutes. Careless defending by Lee Wallace then allowed Dundee United full-back Sean Dillon to gallop through on Marian Kello, but the imposing Slovakian beat the shot away with two strong hands.

United were enjoying the early ascendancy and Kello was again called upon on 23 minutes when Robertson glanced Willo Flood's free-kick goalwards. The Hearts goalkeeper showed sound reactions and agility to tip the ball for a corner, but United's aerial threat was becoming an increasing danger to the visitors. Indeed, a deliberate tactic for Craig Levein's side was to deliver high crosses and free-kicks onto Kello's six-yard line, thereby piling Daly and the equally physical Sandaza on top of the goalkeeper.

Saulius Mikoliunas, Hearts' most assertive player of the afternoon, drove the ball into Lukasz Zaluska's arms in the 37th minute, but there was little debating the hosts' dominance during the opening 45 minutes. When they moved ahead, it was just reward for their endeavours. Michael Stewart was cautioned for a late tackle on Conway, and the United midfielder curled his free-kick high beyond Kello into the top left-hand corner from all of 30 yards.

Hearts didn't heed the warning and moments later Morgaro Gomis' venomous effort skimmed the crossbar on its way over. Laszlo would have recognised that he had his work cut out at the interval to rally his troops.

Within five minutes of the restart however, United had doubled their advantage. Willo Flood's cross seemed innocuous enough but Daly was permitted time to chest the ball down and volley goalwards from ten yards. Despite getting a hand to the ball, Kello could only divert it into the net via his right post. On 61 minutes, referee Dougie McDonald awarded a debatable free-kick against Hearts and, from Conway's delivery, Robertson nodded his first league goal to put the result beyond doubt.

For all they had been second best, 3-0 appeared a tad harsh on the visitors. At times they offered tidy passing movements but, once again, lacked impetus in the final third. Mike Tullberg and Christian Nade were by now on as substitutes and Laszlo will be particularly keen to restore the Dane to full fitness in order to revitalise his attack.

As if the afternoon hadn't been damaging enough for Hearts, McDonald opted to dismiss Jonsson in the 75th minute for persistent fouling. The Icelander can consider himself slightly harshly dealt with but it could not be denied that Conway, who he fouled to incur a second caution, had overwhelmed him down United's left flank.

Mikoliunas struck a post six minutes from time, the Edinburgh side commendably refusing to simply accept defeat. But, in the end, the three points deservedly stayed on Tayside.

Dundee United (4-4-2): Zaluska; Dillon, Dods, Wilkie, Dixon; Flood, Robertson, Gomis, Conway; Daly, Sandaza. Subs: McGovern, Grainger, O'Donovan 59 (for Sandaza), Swanson 90 (for Flood), Kenneth, Buaben, Goodwillie.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): Kello; Jonsson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Kingston, Karipidis, Stewart, Mikoliunas; Ksanavicius; Mole. Subs: Balogh, Palazuelos 68 (for Stewart), Aguiar, Tullberg 59 (for Mole), Nade 53 (for Ksanavicius), Thomson, Rapnik.

Referee: Dougie McDonald.

Attendance: 8004.

Report about right. Well beaten by an impressive UTD side. MoM MIKO again with defense particulary poor as a unit.Karipidas ,Ksanav...& Mole particularly poor.

Frankly dissapointed that Csaba waited until 2-o to change team. Also totally confused by GLENS omission from the bench considering his performance for reserves.

Jonsons ordring off was nothing short of a joke from a joke ref.

I'm just back.

No way did 3-0 flatter Utd. They were and are better than us in every department.

Nade. Empty your locker and GTF. You are an utter disgrace and should never wear the shirt again.

The keeper looks dodge and Banks should be recalled.

Not a good day.

#2. Agree, better than last year will be a reasonable return given no 'significant' additions to pool. Shouldn't get into relegation trouble this year with new manager, although this east defeat and the Falkirk defeat cause concern early in season.

16

Who's it gonna be? ,

27/09/2008 19:27:58
Defo your bogey team, a bit like Inver Caley is ours. However, we've not been beaten 3-0 by them. Yet.
DU are still a good side and their position in the league was never going to be kept for long. A wee result from Hibs tomorrow will at least keep pressure on the OF and make the tables more interesting as Hertz do not have the fire power this season.
17

SAME RULES APPLY !!!,

27/09/2008 19:48:51
#16
Yes we have. 0-3 up there 2 seasons ago. It was 0-3 to Caley at half time that dty as well, just after christmas.
18

Jambo-ree,

27/09/2008 19:50:18
#16 - No disputing they've become a bit of a bogey. The funny thing with bogey teams though is sometimes you can go as many as 22 games without beating them....good luck tomorrow - after our result today a nice wee draw will be just the ticket.
19

Greignotgreg,

, 27/09/2008 20:02:36
Certainly a disappointing result, as have all our away games (except Hamilton) been so far, shame the performance was poor too. If we can keep the home form up though (except in the cup) then we will be top half easy. (except if we go bust)
20

Zohan,

27/09/2008 20:21:03
Deserved to get beat. Mixu you need serious help you've got the personality of a serial killer.
21

Who's it gonna be? ,

27/09/2008 20:37:53
17. Yes. After I posted it I took a double take.
18. Realistically, I would take a draw but Hibs should go for it. Keeps it interesting. Think we have more chance of scoring against the OF than Hearts any day.
19. With Falkirk winning today as well as DU, top half may be a tall order
22

Muslim Jambo,

27/09/2008 20:49:27
We're not a top 6 team.

Wages of champions. Players of Division 1 standard.

Bring back Frail.

21, 22

What I said was: 'IF we can keep up our home form' (which may indeed be a tall order) and I stand by it.
24

Addie,

27/09/2008 20:58:17
Disappointing result but hardly a majot surprise against a team picking up form. Thought the 'events' of last week would have geared up the players but hey ho - its a long season and there's still plenty to play for.

#19 Agree, if we focus on improving our home form this season and finish top 6 then it will be a huge improvement to last season.
25

That's Mr Romanov to you!,

Scotland 27/09/2008 21:10:47
All 10 teams outside the Bigot Brothers will continue to take points off each other in relatively equal proportions. We are all much of a much ness. I still believe however that with our best players fit and selected that HMFC have a better than average chance of being "best of the rest" once again.
26

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

27/09/2008 21:14:02
Played off the park today but more than capable of bouncing back. Bit of a one sided affair and think we need a re think of the tactics. Definately need to mix it up as we are being countered without much varience of the one up and one siting off. Can work of course but would rather 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 away from home or even an attacking 3-5-2. We are learning though and Csaba will find out much more from these types of matches than narrow 1-0 wins.

#27 - Good post.

No qualms from me about the red card. Fully deserved.

Kingston should be shot. He is becoming an expensive liability and swanned around as if the game owed him something.

He should be dropped and told to GTF.

Had the Hearts down for 1-1 in the mini league, the result shocked me a bit.

As a previous poster said United seem to be finding their form after a slow start. I had them to finish 3rd this season, so there might still be hope.

i think players, paid too much get into a comfort zone, where about there wages are paid regardless of effort, perhaps a smaller retainer and a larger win bonus would be in order.

dumfries jambo,

A poor hearts team, our league standing has been masked by 1 goal wins, we have not managed to dominate one team in terms of a big goal scoring advantage, i fear for my beloved jambos yet again this season, not all is well, bad vibes coming out of Tynie, i really think its time for Romanov to pack up and get out, there must be someone out there who has the Jambos best interests at heart

"time for romanov to pack up and get out" i don't want to sound like an old record but the club debt might deter potential investors, they would have to buy the club and take on the debt, approx 45-50 milloin

For a Hibby you have an unhealthy interest in Hearts and in particular some chap called Ollie who used to post on these boards.

You need some serious f***ing help, son.

Either post sensibly or - as you are so fond of telling others - pi$$ off.

Defence was a shambles today. Maybe they never got paid?

Home to a decent Killie side next week. Hopefully JJ will do us a favour and start the game with 8 players to give us a chance.

When does the Lith season finish? I never thought I'd be looking forward to the next batch of them turning up so much.

I had thought that Mad Vlad would have brought over the Brazilian lad that played for Kanaus, he looked a decent player.

Sorry. Don't know who you are on about!

W.O.W. has a life, unlike you who chooses to act like an annoying phanny and hide behind various names to insult all and sundry. (What's wrong with using just the one name?)

Carry on like this, and you will be reported to the moderators. It is idiots like you who are putting folk off from posting on here. Heck, you even turn on fellow Hibbies - surely the sign of a warped mind.

PS - for the record the Pilton bomb fell on a house and not on a cinema.

Anyway I shall not let such thoughts penetrate your twisted little mind.... away and take pictures of the supporters buses arriving at Easter Road if that's what gives you cheap thrills just now.
