A BODY found smouldering on the 11th tee of a world famous golf course was identified by police last night.
The grim discovery was made by greenkeepers at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus early on Wednesday.
Police named the man as Robert Higgins, 51, from Barry, near Carnoustie.
The death is being treated as suspicious and a report has been sent
to the procurator-fiscal.
A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday and Tayside Police said further forensic examination would be performed.
Mr Higgins' badly burned body was spotted by the green-keeping staff at the Buddon golf course at about 6:40am.
A police spokesman said: "Whilst detectives have spoken to a significant number of witnesses during the investigation so far, they are still keen to speak to anyone who might help officers to piece together the deceased's movements during Tuesday evening and into the early hours of Wednesday."
Mr Higgins was described as slim, 5ft 8in to 10in tall and had light brown hair and brown eyes.
When last seen, he was wearing stonewashed jeans, a light-coloured "Bench" T-shirt, a light-coloured canvas jacket and a pair of tan-coloured boots.
He was also carrying a black rucksack or hold-all, said police.
Detectives know he had been drinking in the Craw's Nest bar, in Carnoustie, on Tuesday night.
He was last seen at the end of a pathway which leads to a railway level crossing and a footbridge shortly after midnight.
