FLOODING brought chaos to the centre of Dundee last night causing severe damage to up to 100 properties.
About 40 firefighters were called out shortly before 5pm after a heavy downpour caused up to 2ft of water to surge round properties in the Commercial Street and Trades Lane area.
Basements were flooded, sewage was coming up through toilets and one
property had a lift shaft flooded.
Stewart Edgar, Tayside Fire and Rescue incident commander, said it was the worst flooding he had seen in Dundee for many years, and Karen Smith, a hairdresser, said the flooding caused thousands of pounds of damage to her salon in Commercial Street.
Other shopkeepers spent last night moving stock out of flooded basements.
No-one was evacuated from the area and the water receded quickly.
Meanwhile, rail passengers faced disruption as services between Aberdeen and Dundee were halted overnight after heavy rain deluged the track in several places.
The worst-affected area was near the village of Inverkeilor, in Angus, where 200 metres of track was under two metres of water.
A First ScotRail spokesman said flooding had triggered a landslip near Stonehaven at about 4:30pm, blocking the rail-line.
A replacement bus service will operate today between the two cities. The spokesperson warned: "Journey times will be extended and we are doing everything possible to keep inconvenience to a minimum."
