MORE than half a million people in the UK could have undiagnosed diabetes or be at risk of developing the condition, researchers said yesterday.
A survey of the blood-test records of more than 3.6 million patients revealed thousands of cases of probable diabetes. Across the UK, this could add up to 60,000 extra patients living with the illness, which can have devastating effects on health, a team led by Dr Tim Holt, of Warwick University, said.

Hundreds of thousands of others showed evidence of potentially developing diabetes in the future.

The study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, involved analysing the electronic records of patients from 480 GP surgeries across the UK.

I am really, REALLY surprised that you would make light of such a serious medical condition.

I have friends who are Type 1 Diabetic (requires insulin) and it ain't no joy ride.

In fact diabetics - Type 1 and Type 2 (non-insulin dependent) are subject to heart attack and stroke, foot problems that could lead to amputation of the foot and leg, retinopathy, glaucoma, fainting spells, coma, and death.

These are just SOME of the complications of undiagnosed and untreated diabetes.

With the worldwide epidemic of diabetes - especially in the US of A and the UK - one would think that this is NO LAUGHING MATTER!

#3 Tim: He wasn't making fun of diabetics, his joke was about the guy in Swansea who choked to death at a cake eating contest.
It doesn't make Chuck any less of a dork but at least we know where his 'quick wit' was directed.

I know it is NOT a full moon here so I must be under some kind of weird influence, as usual. It ain't fun being a Pisces.

I apologise to Charles for misinterpreting his wit.

Am I forgiven, Charles?

So, what has given rise to this diabetes epidemic? And, how can there be half a million undiagnosed cases - seems like a contradiction to me. Undiagnoses, potential, probable - hardly hard scientific research.
