Published Date: 16 April 2007
EDINBURGH City Council has commissioned a poll asking residents about plans to demolish Meadowbank, build a new stadium at Sighthill and refurbish the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
The results of the poll, by Ipsos Mori Scotland, will be used to consider improvements to local sports facilities.

But the results came under fire from campaigners fighting to save Meadowbank.

Campaign spokeswoman Paula Ferguson said: "Some very obvious questions, such as asking if people agree to Meadowbank being demolished, simply aren't asked because the poll merely states the site will be sold.

"Other questions are obviously stilted to get a positive response. For example, of course people support investment in new facilities."

Meanwhile, Stewart Harris, chief executive of sportscotland, the national sports agency providing funding to upgrade Edinburgh's sports facilities, has spoken of its support for the plans.

He said a new stadium at Sighthill to replace the ageing Meadowbank Stadium will ensure the provision of "quality, accessible facilities" in the Capital.

The agency is providing £11 million of funding for two major Capital sporting projects - the new stadium and the refurbishment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Surely the council are meant to consult residents before taking the decision to demolish?

Its easeier to build new than upgrade, its not right, but its just the way it is. Deal with it.

4

Ted,

Paul, the question is about the money the Council will make when they sell stadium land in a useful place and build a new stadium in a less useful place.

like its gonna work....,

Near Meadowbank.... 16/04/2007 12:14:42

Sorry? But did the petitions and march against demolishing Meadowbank Stadium not tell them how the locals felt about it....It thought it was obvious they were AGAINST THE IDEA!!!

I don't believe there is any statuatory obligation for the council to consult pre-demolition, councillors are elected to take decisiona we empower them to do so. I'm fed up with the likes of Ferguson and her ilk. When a decsion goes against their personal desire they want a change in law orthey make up a Right.

Its good that the council are consuting residents (its not exclusively Meadowbank LOCALS number 5, the stadium and pool serve the enttire city) as to what sort of faciities they require. Personally, I am amazed that Squah Courts still feature, as its a dying sport.

#6 Over all Edinburgh will lose Meadowbank Stadium and 10 pitches at Sighthill, and end up with a stadium at Sighthill, and no pitches, so we all lose out. We'll never get the pitches back.

Currently we have a raft of Five a side pitches for the beer and office brigade, some Edi Uni Facilities. I cant think of any decent council run sporting facilities of any size in edinburgh.

What are you going to do Cooncil , when theres no more land to sell off to build poxy little flats ?

13

Goat Boy,

16/04/2007 18:26:13

If you can replace a gym with six flats (link above), how many flats can you fit in an area the size of Meadowbank!

HUNDREDS.

All that extra income for the Council. You guys don't stand a chance.

14

Goat Boy,

16/04/2007 18:43:30

Quick question: all these new homes. Where are the jobs? From what I can see, places of work are shutting down all over the city and guess what, they have been replaced with ..... all together now ....... FLATS.

But no one can afford them.

15

Stevie Mac,

I would build 800 flats 16/04/2007 22:24:34

Goat Boy, 800 dwellings is a number I've heard bandied about, don't know how true it is tho? Your assertion about noone being able to afford flats is probably the best point that you make and its a heap of s***e.

Randan "#6 Over all Edinburgh will lose Meadowbank Stadium and 10 pitches at Sighthill, and end up with a stadium at Sighthill, and no pitches, so we all lose out. We'll never get the pitches back."

I don't know how you can claim that by the loss of 10 football pitches that somehow "we all lose out". I don't know what percentage of edinburgh citizens use the pitches at sighthill but I'd be surpised if it is 1/10th of 1 per cent. I'd prefer to fccus on the benefit of the new sports facilities that shall be created at sighthill and at meadowbank. Just my opinion.

This move is all about putting up flats so the Coonsil can get more Coonsil Tax .. the relocation to sighthil is just some lefty idealistic claptrap and the new stadium will be underused due to the yob culture that exists in that area of Edinburgh that the law refuses to deal with.

You can absolutely guarantee the someone is getting a massive backhander for this manouvre ... Meadow bank costs £250,000 a year ... to maintain and they want to spend £53 Million on a new stadium .. that is about £200 per council tax paying household - versus about 50p a year to maintain the status quo! This councils spending is out of hand - and their management is foolish or corrupt or more likey - both!

Edinburgh please vote these Labour clowns out in May!

One of them in the Abbeyhill area is claiming to have created 55,000 new jobs and kept council tax under control!!

Translation 54,999 new Coonsil/public service joabs all at the taxpayers expense and a 98% increase in Council tax over the last ten years ... they really make me sick.
