Jane Munro, 37, a waitress, of Restalrig, lists her top five places to buy birthday presents in the Capital
Flux, Bernard Street. This is one of my favourites – I can spend ages browsing the shelves. I particularly loved the champagne flutes I purchased here for my sister's 30th birthday.

Helios Fountain, Grassmarket. I love all the beads and gem stones they sell in here and if I've got the time I think it's a nice touch to make a necklace or bracelet if any of my trinket-loving friends are celebrating a birthday.

The Soap Co Edinburgh, Canongate. For a lady a little older, this place offers a lovely selection of scented handmade soaps.

The Russian Shop, St Mary's Street. As well as Babushka dolls, this gem of a shop sells lots of little knick-knacks and ornaments that will bring a great deal of birthday joy.

Halibut & Herring, Bruntsfield Place. This is where to go if you're looking for a girly present that's a little quirky. I got a lovely fabric bag from here and the cards are imaginative too.
