COLOMBIAN president Alvaro Uribe, under pressure from Nicolas Sarkozy of France, has agreed to grant Marxist rebels a safe haven to allow for a prisoner exchange.
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) holds 45 hostages, some with ten years in captivity, whom the rebels insist will only be freed when hundreds of their comrades in prison are liberated. Mr Sarkozy's interest is in one particular hostage, Ingrid Betancourt, a French Colombian citizen and former presidential candidate.
"Now Monsieur Marulanda, you have to save a woman in danger of dying," said Mr Sarkozy, addressing the FARC's legendary leader Manuel Marulanda.
