THE TV soap Family Affairs is being axed by Channel Five, it was announced yesterday.
The weekday soap was the first programme to broadcast on the channel on its launch in March 1997.

In the eight years since there have been 2,250 episodes, but bosses believe the soap is not pulling big enough audiences.

Filming will end in October and the final episode will be broadcast in December.

Family Affairs won two British Soap Awards this year for best dramatic performance and best storyline.

Channel Five bosses said the show had come to the end of its "natural lifespan".
