Published Date: 03 July 2009
JAN Vennegoor of Hesselink and Paul Hartley have become the first casualties of the Tony Mowbray era at Celtic after being allowed to leave the club.
Their contracts have expired as of the first day of this month and Mowbray yesterday confirmed they have been permitted to move on. Bobo Balde is another who has left the club, but given his recent inactivity, and the fact he has only featured 14 times in the last three seasons, he was not expected to feature in Mowbray's plans.

The new Celtic manager is hopeful he can begin adding to the squad this week with the capture of Marc-Antoine Fortune from Nancy. Mowbray worked with the French striker when he was on loan at West Bromwich Albion last season and, while the player is keen to team-up with his former manager, more lucrative contract offers from Premier League clubs in England have put the move in jeopardy.

More clear-cut are the cases of Hartley and Vennegoor of Hesselink. Both players are very much of the Gordon Strachan era at Celtic and had their seasons disrupted by injury during the last campaign. Their release does not constitute a surprise, though Mowbray was quick to pay tribute to Hartley, who has been linked with a return to Hearts. Mowbray, who spent over two years in charge at Hibernian, first encountered Hartley during his time with the Tynecastle club.

"I have had a good few conversations with Paul," said Mowbray. "Paul is going to go and look at other options. I will tell you now that I found him a very decent man. My only real workings with Paul in the past is when he has been banging in goals for Hearts against Hibs. I found him a very honourable man and a very good professional. He understood my job. They were very amicable discussions. I wished him well on whatever he decides to do."

By contrast, Mowbray has had no contact with Vennegoor of Hesselink and simply assumes the Dutch striker is in talks with other clubs. He was signed by Strachan in 2006 and scored 34 goals in 63 league appearances. While this represents a healthy ratio, he never totally convinced the supporters in his three seasons at the club.

"I have had no conversations with Jan," revealed Mowbray. "As far as I can see he is a free agent and he is within his rights to go and look for employment. I have had no conversations with him but I think it's a done deal he is not coming back."

Mowbray clearly regards Fortune as the ideal replacement for Vennegoor of Hesselink. A £3.8 million fee has been agreed between Celtic and Nancy so it is now just a matter of Fortune weighing up his options. The fact Mowbray is already well known to the player could help tip the balance in Celtic's favour, but the manager was also alert to the fact that the offer of better personal terms elsewhere could see Fortune return to English football.

"We have come to an agreement with his club but the boy does have options, and is a little bit torn at the moment," explained Mowbray.

"His first choice would be to come here and play – he is very aware of the Celtic history and tradition, and I would like to think he quite likes the coach. But he has a couple more Premier League clubs chasing him. He now has that eternal battle between making the football decision or the financial decision. I would never judge anyone on that. It is a very difficult decision to make.

"It will be done in the next day or two, one way or the other. If he did come here I would say to you that he will have given up far better options financially. He has had some very attractive offers. I sit here today hopeful but also realistic. If he goes elsewhere I would say 'good luck' to him. He is a good man. I would not sit here and say he is a money-grabber. He came into the game at 21 and played in the Dutch league for a few years and earned very little money. He is now at the stage of his career where he needs to secure his future after football.

"From our conversations he would love to come and play for this club, with its tradition, supporters and European nights. His dilemma is possibly securing his future or playing for this football club. If it was only a football context, and we were all on a level playing field financially, he would be here already."

#2 Shantaram, "Working for his money", I don't think so. You guys have set him up for life.

He can live the rest of his days in Monaco with 4 years of £30 grand a week plus agreed add on's Celtic paid him. I assume the person who signed this deal has been taken out back and shot.

At least this sorry saga has come to an end.

#4 Sorry Suzanne

'They didn't pay him for his services'

If he was being paid for his services he has to return about £4.5 million to Celtic.

I wonder if one day will be revealed the mystery of what happened there? Folly by both parties but mostly by the club I believe.

Watched you posting these last few days under this name. I assume that you are a Hollies fan - old timer?

If that's the case, and as a Rangers fan, I wish you a season long nashing of teeth.

Where is 'thepundit' these days? Did he pass on to that great Ibrox in the sky?

Cammy - I wish you guys would make up your minds.

One minute we're a biscuit tin club, next you're claiming we paid Balde more than 30 grand a week.

Utter rubbish.

Balde is claiming Celtic made a verbal agreement to pay him a 100 grand bonus a few years ago. A verbal agreement? Are we expected to believe that Peter Lawwell and Bobo Balde made a verbal agreement? Neither of them wanted to put it in writing? After what happened with Di Canio, Van Hooydonk and Cadete?Who is he trying to kid?

#Shantaram, I'm not claiming he was paid £30gpw, he was. Go back and check if you don't believe me, it was all revealed when he turned down Birminham's offer of almost £25gpw.

I do think that Celtic closed that particular door after the horse had bolted. Now you've decided that only competing with Rangers is your level. With the resources you have you'd think that a little more ambition in Europe would surface. However sadly they'd now rather please shareholders than fans.

As for your prediction about Fortune, lets be honest he's not exactly beating down your door. He's "Weighing up options", which is code for " I'm looking for a better offer, but at least I've got a fall back position".

Still you have to be right eventually, so who knows.
16

Shantaram,

03/07/2009 03:50:37
Cammy - When English clubs came in for Balde - Sunderland and Birmingham - it was widely reported that they had offered him exactly the same wage he was on at Celtic, so that would be £25k a week. Anyway, he's gone now. If you want to argue about PAST Celtic players, be my guest.

£4.6m in transfer fees paid for JvoH and Paul H.....not a penny recouped. Anyway reckon PH will end up in the Championship, had his best season in 2005/6 when Hearts finished second, he was outstanding!

Anyway interested to see who Celtic get into replace these two and Naka.
19

PR,

Dublin 18 03/07/2009 07:58:44
I haven't seen a less mobile Celtic centre forward than JVoH since McAvennie returned for his second stint.

He even made John Hartson look like Usain Bolt in his final days. One too many injuries I think, but he'll never be forgotten following the injury time winner against the mob at CP the season before last.

I agree totally with #17 iro Paul Hartley.

Celtic won't look quite as menacing now without Hartley and his line in intimidating beards...

ColinM,

Re No 17.

Tony Mowbray never forgave Hartley demolishing his Hibs side at that semi-final, he made that clear at the time and afterwards, and is clearly not a man to forgive easily.

Celtic's loss and someone else's gain (hopefully Hearts to be honest) even though he is slower now.

I have to agree with Todd. If Celtic sign an overrated Hibs ‘youngster’ for millions the Hibs fans are crying their eyes out. If Celtic say ‘thanks but no thanks to your overrated youngster in exchange for millions’ the Hibs fans are crying their eyes out.
What a bunch of whingeing bittermans.

I cant think of one Celtic fan who was ‘overly excited’ at the prospect of signing yet another Hibs player. Fletcher has his positives – a good tidy player who mainly does his good work outside the box - but he also has his weak points and he simply wouldn’t have scored more than 20 goals a season even for Celtic. I think a Celtic (or even Rangers) manager can realistically expect that he SHOULD have a striker that scores more than 20 goals a season in the SPL.
27

Andrew Sachs,

03/07/2009 09:57:08
Now everything is clear – Owen Coyle was Celtic’s first choice as manager – who could deny it, it was in (some) of the papers plus Coyle has managed to gain his team promotion into the EPL. Its not as if Mowbray has ever managed anything as good as that in his (longer and comparatively more varied) career as a manager

"He now has that eternal battle between making the football decision or the financial decision"

Errr...he's got to make the decision between playing against Falkirk or Manchester United. I think the footballing and financial decisions are the same, the only difference is whether he can be bothered trying to find out just how good he is or whether he takes easy (and less) money to play in Scotland where people like Aidan McGeady (aka the world's least productive winger) are seen as great players.

Henrik Larsson's about the only properly good player I can think of in the last 10 years who's made the sort of decision Celtic are looking for here, I'm afraid.
