The London singer was due to headline the three-day Rock en Seine festival just outside Paris on Friday night, in a line-up which included the Raconteurs, Kate Nash and the Streets.
However, less than two hours before she was due on stage festiva
l organisers discovered she would not be arriving, and have notified ticket buyers that they intend to take the singer to court.
An announcement on the festival's website stated that organisers had received "no explanation" for the singer's absence, and "because of the conditions of this cancellation, the festival has taken the decision to start legal proceedings".
According to French newspaper Le Monde, Winehouse's entourage had arranged for the singer to fly from London to the concert venue by private jet, leaving at 7pm and arriving on site just minutes before she was due to perform at 10.15pm. However, festival organisers were informed at 8.30pm that she would not be appearing.
Festival director François Missonnier laid the blame firmly with Winehouse.
He said: "We're not at all happy. With everything that's said about her, it's impossible to untangle the truth from the lies."
Winehouse's spokesman confirmed she had not been able to perform. He said: "Amy Winehouse was regrettably unable to perform at the Rock en Seine show in Paris due to illness. She was taken ill at her house and wasn't able to travel to France for the concert."
