Lennox: Africa's Aids crisis 'similar to horror of Nazi concentration camps'

Published Date: 19 July 2008
ANNIE Lennox, the Scots-born rock star, has launched an outspoken attack on the South African government over its response to the HIV/Aids pandemic in southern Africa, a crisis she compared to the Nazi concentration camps of the Second World War.
She also described the South African government's approach to the crisis as a "debacle" and the Catholic Church's stance as unhelpful.

The 53-year-old musician, who has sold 80 million records globally, said she was shocked by the scale of the HIV/Aids crisis when she worked on a project in South Africa and said she would do everything she could to raise awareness of the issue.

According to the latest UN figures, 30 per cent of pregnant women in South Africa have HIV/Aids, a figure which rises to 40 per cent in Swaziland. Many families are already fatherless, having lost the main bread-winners because they have walked out or died, while a large number are now becoming motherless as well due to HIV/Aids, leaving thousands of Aids orphans.

Lennox is due to appear at the Festival of Politics at the Scottish Parliament next month to highlight the fight against HIV/Aids.

In an interview with The Scotsman, which is a media partner in the event, she explained why she was so determined to help.

Echoing the stance of Nelson Mandela, she said the issue of HIV/Aids in southern Africa was a "question of human rights".

She said: "When it comes to the pandemic, it is on such a scale that unless you have a direct experience and have visited the country and seen for yourself, it's almost beyond imagination.

"When I think about the Second World War and the horror of the concentration camps, and after people realised what was going on and said, 'This is a horror, how could human beings do this?' and I saw this pandemic and thought, it's a similar thing in a way."

She said the solution had to be found in the way society behaved, as sufferers were often women and children. "You are looking at women's rights, protection from rape and domestic violence and abuse, you are looking at education because of the very nature of this disease.

"A sexually transmitted disease has a great deal of stigma and people respond to it very differently from another disease carried in a different way and it runs right the way through society, there are no boundaries with this disease.

"People will tend to deny someone is dying of it in their immediate family, they will be afraid to acknowledge it, all the way through from government ministers themselves."

And, on the attitude of the South African government – which has been criticised for playing down the extent of the crisis and refusing to acknowledge the causes and possible treatments – Lennox said: "It's been a debacle how (South Africa's president, Thabo] Mbeki has, over the last decade, taken a very eccentric stance."

She added that the Catholic Church's opposition to the use of condoms had "not been helpful" particularly with the huge number of rapes in southern Africa.

The musician said she was passionate over the issue and wanted to act as a "conduit" to inform people and governments about what was really going on.

Last month Lennox, in an exclusive interview with The Scotsman, said she supported Scottish independence and hoped the nation could set an example to the world on environmental issues.

Does Annie Lennox actually realise what an embarrassment she is.? She's the kind of ego-mad washed up celeb who'll hurriedly step over a homeless beggar in Glasgow on their way to do an interview to highlight the homeless issue in Africa.

Anywhere there's a camera for publicity-shy Annie to be widely seen doing her charidee work....just shut up your whining, woman.!

Criticising the Mbeki government is not the hardest thing in the world to do.

Anyway, at least Annie Lenox is atttempting to raise people's awareness of the plague of AIDs in Africa - another disaster that people on the UK seem to rank alongside the Cat Protection League in importance.

Annie is using her profile to highlight a massive human disaster, and rightly so.
Or are you numskulls just having a bleat because she’s Scottish and she for Scottish independence?
As a roll model she’s terrific. Perhaps you’re all English and are a bit embarrassed that your own Amy Winehouse is not exactly a world leader in giving a good example to the world!

One must ask why the AIDS epidemic is so prevalent in SA. Although AIDS is a problem in Central Africa, population growth still stays significantly high. SA and surrounding states ( Botswana etc) have negative population growth rate

The concentration camps of WWII were an attempt by a government to industrially exterminate a race. What is going on in Africa is simply an incompetent group of people trying to cope with a medical disaster which has its roots in cultural behaviour. The two situations are distressing but hardly comparable. I do not understand why the kindergarten rubbish which dribbles out of the mouths of "celebs" on subjects like this (or the Global Warming Obsession) make it into the news. We have enough lunatics in government at the moment without even more insanity hitting the airwaves.
16

The Former Mr. Angry,

Perth 19/07/2008 09:54:29
I'm afraid Annie is up there with the likes of Saint Bob and Bono in terms of actual grasp of the problem and what causes it. So if it's like a concentration camp (which it isn't) what or who is causing it? How can we be more guilty and plough in tons of aid cash into a quagmire of corruption, brutal dictators, ignorance and backwards attitudes? Oh we are already courtesy of Brown. This whole aid thing is out of control - no observable conditions applied, no improvement. Surely when something stops working you have to ask yourself why. This clearly has not penetrated the minds of these vacuous celebs who are intent on self-publicity and display of bleeding hearts.

Annie Lennox is doing good work and she is absolutely correct to point a finger at our ANC government. The more people in her position who speak out about the farcical ANC the better for the dying millions.
Some people will listen to what Lennox is saying and then make it all about her. Others, who are more refined and more mature and happy in themselves and their achievments will immediately look to the dying masses and make it about them.
Thabo Mbeki has already said that aids is not actually related to HIV. He also said there was no such thing as AIDS. His minister of health, the dispicable alcoholic, Miss Manto, has said that people with AIDS should NOT seek white mans western medicine but rather use African traditional medicine like beetroot and garlic, which to be honest is also white mans medicine in that know such plants existed there until the white man planted them there.
Nevertheless, this same woman who speaks out against the white mans medicine is the woman who recently needed a liver transplant, she is after all an alcoholic. But did she seek the assistance of a traditional healer or take garlic and beetroot? Did she hell, she checked in to a PRIVATE hospital and did the western white mans medical thing.
How bad is it when your minister of health cannot even use a government hospital?
Go on Annie, spread the word.

You are wrong! You must remember that most of Europe and America would have the same AIDS problems if not for the work that our governments did in making sure we understood the disease. If we were not constantly told about the fatality of the disease we would still be having unprotective sex with anyone.
In South Africa, the continents wealthiest and by far most modern of nations, we have the worst aids rate in the world and that is because we have an African minister of health suggesting that garlic and beetroot is the best possible cure for aids. So what chance to the masses have?
Can you imagine you in the west were told that unprotective sex was not going to give you aids? In otherwords, much of the mindset surrounding the disease comes from government, and this woman we have is a fukcing African joke. And they wont fire her, because firing her means admiting she cant do the job. And that means the acceptance of African faliure..

Did you know that one of the main reasons for the acceleration of AIDS throughout Africa, is the ill conceived notion that a man can rid himself of the virus by having sexual intercourse with virginal children, the younger the child the more likelihood that she is a virgin? This has led to the raping of babies and toddlers. Still keen on the tadpole?

I knew that, but I was frightened to say it because the lefty liberal facists would screeeeeam racism.

The woman is one of the most talented Pop/Rock singers of our time. So to compare her to Mozart and say her stuff is junk, and that she is washed up, is just stupid. She is a lengend, and I respect the work she has been doing with HIV/AIDS. I wish she would address it on a more Global level, than just Africa. Since people don't always have access to care all across the world. But this is her choice and focus she has chosen. The place I think Annie is wrong, is comparing this to Nazi Concentration camps...I get what she is trying to compare, but I feel it is a vulgar comment and insulting to compare the two, and she is a bit out of line, though she means no harm by this statement. To compare the South African people to Hitler is insulting, and also downplays the events that caused so many Jews to die. Both events are awful. And Yes the South African government should do more..etc But Annie please don't compare the two. Other than that, I admire her work on this issue and also as an artist. She seems like a smart careing person, so please think before you speak.
