Protesters in drive to halt Caltongate

CAMPAIGNERS fighting the Caltongate development were making their voices heard today.
Around 30 protesters gathered outside City Chambers for the start of the planning committee meeting.

The Save Our Old Town campaign has vowed to fight the development which will include a cultural quarter, a five-star hotel and conference centre, office blocks, 200 homes and bars, restaurants and cafes.

Jean McCallum, 80, from Chessels Court, said: "I don't think they should be demolishing listed buildings, especially the proposals for Jeffrey Street. It looks like a prefab in a builder's yard."

Emily Learmont, 38, of Jeffrey Street, said the idea was "like landing a spacecraft in medieval Edinburgh".

It's like "all of Edinburgh" are against the development.

It's time to move on guys and bring the rundown east end of the Royal Mile up to scratch. Take a look at the runthrough video on the caltongate website- I think the plans look fantastic and very much in keeping with the dual stategy of a) development in style sympathetic to the surroundings and b) magnificent showpiece buildings that have the potential to be admired in the future as the Balmoral hotel, Jenners etc are admired today.

"Magnificent showpiece buildings"????!!! Are you absolutely mental?? The type of architecture proposed is absolutely the type that will have people in thirty years time saying, "What on earth were they thinking?!!".

No, this design is simply not good enough and, most worryingly, threatens the World Heritage Site status of Edinburgh's Old Town.

Economic growth is vital but a poorly planned, ugly scheme such as this will only stunt growth in the long term. Mountgrange must go back to the drawing board in order to make the architectural design more in keeping with the buildings that surround the site.

The solution is kick out the foreign developer, split the site with a road extending from East Market St to Tolbooth Wynd,(Magdalenes way) and run the closes down the hill leaving the north end open for gardens. It is the only area of the site which gets sunlight in winter.
have separate developers build "as like" with in the form of and progressing the Scottish vernacular and lo a lovely place to be will organically progress.

You can take your "down-load from Mars" and shove it up Mountgranges @ss

New St is simply not applicable for a scheme, this is the The old town of Edinburgh, a legend in the form of masonry through-out the world.

A World heritage site.

GET A GRIP OF REALITY """"PLANNERS""""OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL.

You couldn't plan your way through an open road.

Everyone complains, and the council does it any way, is not consulting that is fascism plain and simple.

Blind fool, clearly you cannot read.

It is a well known fact that the buildings of Edinburgh are internationally admired, largely attributable to the simple fact that the most varied types of stone (masonry) was/are available to the builder/architects advancing the practice of the stone build markedly, hence Edinburgh as a legend in the form of masonry.
