PROTESTERS have vowed to stage a demonstration in a last-ditch attempt to convince councillors to throw out the controversial Caltongate project.
Around 50 people gathered at Old St Paul's Church Hall, on Jeffrey Street, last night to discuss ways to halt the £300 million development, ahead of a council meeting next Wednesday.

Catriona Grant, of the Canongate Community Forum's Stop the Demolitions, said: "There is only a week to go so we need to focus our energies and decide the best way forward before the meeting."

The event was attended by Edinburgh SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville, city centre councillor David Beckett, alongside members of the Old Town Community Council and local residents.

It was decided that members would write to community councils to gather support.

The plans involve a cultural quarter, a five-star hotel and conference centre, office blocks, 200 homes, bars, restaurants and cafés, as well as a new street linking Princes Street to Holyrood.

A placard workshop will take place on Saturday.

Ah yes - the lunatic fringe 6 Foo,ejinbere has its say, and says nothing constructive or meaningful.

No idea at all about the issues, clearly.

Yes, a small number of people seem to do the same. It's a pity really, as it could be useful place to share information and ideas, and put across another side to issues which at times are not reported.

I hadn't noticed the comments being terribly scurrilous, simply silly, so maybe you need to try a little harder if you wish to be so.

Once rejected, I hope the council will look again at the Holyrood masterplan, come to their senses and realise this is another planning disaster in the making. Planning application 04/03450 is almost as big as Caltongate, but little discussed compared to Caltongate.

We are jammed in between the Caltongate and the Holyrrod Masterplans where quite a few of the Save Our Old Town protestors live. What are your concerns of the Holyrood Master Plan? Whilst there are issues we need to focus on there, there are not the same issues. In the Caltongate it means demolishing homes and listed buildings, selling off common good land and dodgy land deals that the council benefits from. It would be good to tell the Old Town Community Council about your concerns so it can do something about it. Unfortunately so much time is taken up by Caltongate.

It makes me a bit sad that people mock those who are trying preserve and build their community and protect the World Heritage site. The Canongate Community Forum wants the area to be developed, however Caltongate is too massive and just not the right development - it would suit the Gyle or a New Town but not a historic site. The people who are involved against Caltongate come from all different backgrounds, politics, are local to the Canongate and beyond.

Our point is that the infrastructure in Edinburgh is rubbish and that is why we want to have the buildings and land used well, we are just going to have another St James Centre that will need demolished in forty years time.

HRH Prince Charles (the Duke of Rothsay) was speaking at a conference in London today about inappropriate architecture and the WHS in London.

A great deal of what he had to say I fear could apply soon to Edinburgh:

I agree, shame that what is a useful debating space is spoiled by the few.
