Does this mean that we might be able to catch up with the rest of the world?

I'd be willing to give odds that it won't be any cheaper, and it will still have restrictions on downloads etc.

Don't let Virgin Media near it!

They ruined Telewest/blueyonder!!!

A little more information please? Some idea about how it works? Why is it cheaper and faster?

This isn't a news story!

Who did this? Engineers, scientists, or both?

So, they've 'developed a device' and now they're going to 'build a prototype'? Eh? If they've already developed it, then surely they've already built (and maybe even tested) a prototype?

Typically poor reporting of science and engineering.

In the interests of balance I have to say the improvement in service since Virgin Media took over ntl has been excellent.

# 5 - are you a Virgin Media Plant, a "spin Doctor"?
Never thought I would ever look back at NTL with fondness, but I do now....

I agree with you.

Virgin media are only concerned with taking your money. The service was excellent when it was Telewest/Blueyonder. Virgin's service is appalling and it was a pity that Virgin took over.

Agreed. The scientist involved, Dr Jianmin Tang, has been awarded a prize by the Royal Society to develop better optical modems:

Presumably it's based on some of his published work, e.g.
