Published Date: 02 June 2009
UNITED States president Barack Obama pushed General Motors into bankruptcy yesterday, saying it was part of a "viable, achievable plan that will give this iconic company a chance to rise again".
He said he hoped GM would emerge quickly from bankruptcy, and that the US government was ready to commit an extra $30 billion (£18bn) to help the company get back on its feet.

The bankruptcy filing is the third-largest in US history and the larges
t ever in US manufacturing. The company said it had $172.81bn (£105bn) in debt and $82.29bn (£50bn) in assets.

Mr Obama said the US government would own 60 per cent of the new GM, and acknowledged that could prove controversial with some. Seeking to ease those concerns, he said: "What I am not doing, what I have no interest in doing, is running GM."

The president said motor industry executives "will call the shots and make the decisions about turning this company around". He said the US government would refrain from playing a management role in all but the most critical areas.

"Our goal is to help GM get back on its feet … and get out quickly," he said of the federal government.

Mr Obama was speaking as GM entered bankruptcy court and as rival Chrysler was looking to emerge after a two-month reorganisation.

At the weekend, a bankruptcy judge gave Chrysler approval to sell most of its assets to Italy's Fiat, part of a plan under which the US government will own somewhat less than 10 per cent of the firm.

Under the GM plan envisaged by Mr Obama's motor industry task force, the federal government will wind up with 60 per cent ownership in the one-time pillar of American capitalism.

That comes in addition to its smaller stake in Chrysler, as well as significant interests in banks, the insurance firm AIG and two mortgage industry giants, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Mr Obama thanked the governments of Canada and Germany for the part they played in helping develop the GM plan.

Speaking at the White House, where he was flanked by cabinet secretaries and economic advisers, Mr Obama said the restructuring will "take a painful toll on many Americans", with the closure of additional plants and the loss of jobs.

The president did not pause to answer questions, but Republicans had plenty.

"The only thing it makes clear is that the government is firmly in the business of running companies using taxpayer dollars," said House Republican Leader John Boehner.

"Does anyone really believe that politicians and bureaucrats in Washington can successfully steer a multinational corporation to economic viability?

"It's time for the administration to fully explain what the exit strategy is to get the US government out of the boardroom once and for all."

Is the USA run by Obama, or does the USA have a government too?

Nannie in #2: you are mistaken, the US taxpayers are not paying for the pension plans. Instead, the lawfully earned compensation that the ordinary workers were to receive is being taken from them. but Citibank and Morgan chase are being compensated. surprise surprise.

The problem is the amount of money spent of keeping up with the Jones' when the economy is in freefall. How much money is it costing taxpayers to send those jets to Japan to eavesdrop on North Korea? How much money is wasted on maintaining foreign bases? How much money is wasted on Iraq and Afghanistan? It looks like the terrorists are winning by deliberately making the US bankrupt.

You could probably see a postage stamp on the ground from one of your observation satellites but it's about showing face and having jets buzz about. It's all about threats and counterthreats which is the main distraction this summer as various financial mega deals are done behind our backs. It gives governments time: for the hardest job they usually avoid is telling a few home truths to their own people. Out of the disinformation, the media will include some real facts to gauge the public response. Then we'll get more disclosure.

Might work, I think it was K-Mart that went into chapter 11 and are soon to emerge as they have shown a profit for the last year or so.

Jim,Don't know about kmart and chap.11-I do know they either bought up, but at any rate merged,w/Sears and do seem to be rising slowly from the ashes. What's really funny here,is the failure of most large "chain" stores here seems in direct proportion to the surliness of it's employees.Good service~more customers.Go figure.

Definitely an electric cury Corvette! GM have the expertise to build it. But the last time they did an electric glam model, they recalled them all and trashed them. The ways of corporations are indeed strange.

Inasmuch as there were scathing books written about the decision to go to Iraq, given time there will be scathing exposes of this debachle. These bondholders and their lawyers will not be silent for forever.
The suppression tactics and what was done to manipulate and or silence the dealers, the lawyers and the bondholders will come out.
Sad day in the history of government abuse

Hummer was bought by the Chinese this morning. There are 3,000 jobs involved with that Brand here in the states. Are they keeping it here, or building it in China... no one knows yet.

I own a Hummer and love it. I did not object to the price. I did object to the fact that the first $1000 went to pay for pensions and fat cat bonuses.

Here's an interesting related article.

http://mugsysrapsheet.com/2009/06/01/health-insurance-costs-are-killing-the-car-companies/

The American health care system is awesomely expensive compared to other countries. The US spends about 16% of its gdp on health care. The other advanced nations spend only 8-12% of their gdp's on health care. Yet the American system doesn't even give good care to many of the citizens. When this burden of the very expensive system is put onto a private employer it gives them a huge competitive disadvantage.

But the Americans are so arrogant, proud and deluded that they feel that no amount of self-imposed disadvantages will hurt them or at least they pretend not to care. The medical profession has concluded that if we go to a single-payer source like other countries instead of the fragmented dysfunctional system the Americans use that this will get some control over costs. Obama promised in the campaign that he'd do this. But recently, the US congress has let everyone know that it will protect the big money health corporations and not make changes. People advocating the single-payer system were actually arrested for trying to meet with lawmakers on this. Even discussion of the single-payer system in congress is not tolerated.

#22 Golly, there is much documentation that our system is just plain too expensive for what we get. Other nations have done better for much less cost. The quality health care that we enjoy in the US is not that uncommon around the world today. but others get it for much less money. If we cared for our future, then we'd make changes in it. 16% of gdp is way too much when other countries get just as much a high-quality system for only 10% of gdp.

The article I linked to is just one of many alleging that GM has a great disadvantage in health care costs. I'm sorry, I'm American. I think our future matters. If you think we should be flushed down the drain with dysfunctionalism for the sake of profits of big corps, then that is your business. I'll still speak for the benefit of my people.

Nancy in #25: due to your position as Speaker of the House in the US Congress I am sure you are aware that since September of last year the US government has borrowed about $14.5 trillion from foreign banks for bailouts of rich people. and you're gloating over the frivilous spending of money. You have no empathy or concern or sympathy for our people. You should resign your position. The people of San Francisco should vote you out of office. You are unacceptable.

Also, speaker Pelosi, there are 179 US congressman who are co-sponsors of Ron Paul's legislation to audit the federal reserve. Yet you will apparently not allow the people's will to be expressed on this issue. Why don't you allow your colleagues to vote this bill up or down?

Also, speaker Pelosi, why do you favor spending $1 trillion a year on combined military and intelligence functions? Don't you realize this is bankrupting us? Or it doesn't matter to you. Your answer in #25 indicates that it just doesn't matter to you. Don't you favor bringing the troops home. I know your constituents in San Francisco do.

This is how the pride of many Americans is. They really don't care if their country is flushed down the drain. Their pride is more important.
