IT wasn't big and it wasn't flashy but Fred MacAulay did what he does best at the Queens Hall on Saturday night – he made people laugh.
Although the intimacy of the Queen's Hall was well suited to the easy-going comedian, the turnout at the venue
was disappointing as the entire top floor was left unoccupied. However, MacAulay didn't let the small audience faze him, declaring the gig, "cosy" and just for "friends and family".
After an animated fight with an intruding fly onstage and some light banter about male waxing and strip bars, MacAulay took his audience down memory lane with the funniest part of the evening – his childhood slideshow.
Displaying imaginative drawings he created at school, the 51-year-old comic talked the audience through his bizarre creations from red bananas to odd-looking cats and explained how he has always loved making things up to make people laugh. The way the comic poked fun of his six-year-old self was both hilarious and heart-warming. The Perthshire comedian does not seem the type to taunt his audience on appearances or accents, but he couldn't resist commenting on the 'fat, baldy bloke with the beautiful Italian wife' and wondering aloud, 'how much is he worth?'
Despite the poor turnout, MacAulay made sure everyone had a good time. The few who did come along will be glad they made the effort.
