So communist Ken Livingstone gets his way again.

Never thought I'd see the day they erect a statue of former convicted terrorist in Parliament square.

What next , a statue of Martin McGuiness in Trafalgar Square ?

Then we'd better remove all statues of Wallace and the Bruce in all places.

#3 Scullion. Wallace and Bruce were not terrorists; they were fighting a foreign invader. The invaders were, in fact, the terrorists.

"Terrorist" or "Freedom fighter" does it matter? Mandela has nothing to do with Britain, so why erect a statue to him? There are many more worthy to be honoured than Mandela.

Mandela is a great man end of story, whether his statue should be in parliament sqare is another.
Has #4 ever heard of the Douglas Larder?. I think his history was learned at Mel Gibson's Knee.

#4 So what were they doing in London?

Is there a statue of Mandela outside the SA Parliament? Or Margaret Thatcher? Or Harold Wilson? Great man though some think Mandela may be, isn't there enough by way of tributes up and down the Inited Kindom?

#4 - Wallace was a renowned perpetrator of massacres and crimes against human rights. We have seen his like in Serbia most recently. Certainly a terrorist, but if he brings in the towrists...

Mandela deserves to be celebrated because after all his travails he brought peace and harmony to a nation.

Ok, my comment was tongue in cheek. Mandela IS a remarkable human being, no doubt. But his organisation DID advocate bombing of government property and targeting opponents. However despicable Apartheid was, terrorism is never justifited. Gandhi showed how to succeed with peaceful means.

#Peeable - Bit harsh on the Iron Lady. Ok, she will regret imposing poll tax til her last day, but without her Britain would still be being held to ransom by trade unions as in 70s. And maybe Argentina would still be occupying our sovereign territory. Her legacy is more positive than negative.

#5 Sinnerman. Couldn't have said it better myself. Great Brits should be celebrate. What about the Scot, James Watt, who kick started the world's first Industrial Revolution with his engineering genius. Or William Wilberforce, who helped abolished slavery?

Common, let's celebrate our own before those overseas

Mandela or Madiba as we call him, is a man who has earned the respect of the South African people, both black and white.

Some people struggle with their conscience concerning Mandela because the truth of the matter is that he and his party are responsible for the murder of innocent people in several bomb attacks throughout SA.

Freedom fighter or terrorist is up for debate. But the murder of innocents is not, it happened!

Personally, I cannot and will not disrespect the man. I hold him dear and see him as a lighting rod between the races, someone who can unite them. I try not to think about the Pretoria Street bombings or McGoos bar, I try to focus on what good he has done and put the rest down to politics. I am not justifying what his party done, I am merely attempting to try and put that behind me by accepting that the political climate back then was intense.

I think a statue of the man anywhere in Africa would be right. But to erect one in London is outrageous to say the least.

#2 Please elaborate on why Thatcher is a war criminal...

Mandela is a truly inspirational figure, regardless of which part of the world you reside.

Frankly, if it was my choice, I would have gone for Ronald Reagan, a man who did so much for the cause of freedom and democracy.

Er, isn't that what Mandela was doing too?

If we are removing statues please start with the incongruous one of Rob Roy outside the Albert Halls in Stirling.

Had the cattle thief and terroriser showed his face there in his lifetime he would have surely been lynched.
