THE veteran anti-apartheid campaigner Helen Suzman died yesterday, aged 91.
Her daughter, Frances Jowell, said she died peacefully at home in Johannesburg.

The family plans to follow a private funeral this weekend with a public memorial in February.

Ms Suzman had a special place in South African history, being generally recognised as the most effective parliamentary fighter against apartheid policies.

For 13 years – from 1961 to 1974 – she was the sole representative in parliament of the Progressive Party, forerunner of the Democratic Party.

She was born in Germiston, Gauteng, on 7 November, 1917 to a Jewish Lithuanian immigrant couple. She retired from politics in 1989.

I remember Helen Suzman well when she was the MP for Houghton in Johannesburg she was a brilliant debater
and could hold her own with anyone! I am sure that by now she would be totally disillusioned as any right minded individual would be with the policies of African government.

She and others like her share the blame for creating a society in South Africa that experiences some 53 murderes a day!
