A FOOD substance normally associated with good health may play an active role in Alzheimer's disease, research has shown.
Scientists have found a link between raised levels of the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid and memory loss and behavioural changes in mice.

The discovery points to new ways of tackling Alzheimer's.

Fatty acids are rapidly taken up by the br
ain and incorporated into phospholipids, which shield the neurons in the brain from toxins.

Researchers compared many different fatty acids in the brains of normal mice and animals with a condition that mimics human Alzheimer's disease.

Study leader Dr Rene Sanchez-Mejia, from the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Diseases in San Francisco, California, said: "The most striking change we discovered in the Alzheimer's mice was an increase in arachidonic acid and related metabolites in the hippocampus, a memory centre that is affected by Alzheimer's disease."

Arachidonic acid is released from phospholipids in the brain by an enzyme called group IVA phospholipase, or PLA2. By lowering PLA2 levels in Alzheimer's mice, the memory deficits and behavioural abnormalities associated with the disease were prevented.

Writing in the journal Nature Neuroscience, the scientists said fatty acid levels could generally be regulated by diet or drugs.

Charles - fish is rich in Omega 3 - which is known to be a "goody".

Omega 6 is found in poultry, eggs, cereals, wholegrain breads, baked goods, nuts, most vegetable oils.

Not sure exactly what the point of this story is as we already know that, out of all the omegas 6 is not really a "goody". If you read up on anti-cancer diets you'll find that the advice is to avoid Omega-6 Vegetable Oils, such as Corn, Safflower and Sunflower Oil.

Omega 6 is also associated with heart attacks, thrombotic stroke, arrhythmia, arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammation and mood disorders.

So what foodstuff contains "omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid" then?

This article is about as useful as the adverts for shampoo that talk about "pentapeptides". I mean, what the hell are they? What do they do? Why are advertisers not compelled by law to give an explanation?

Back on topic, I can't be expected to avoid (or otherwise) certain "omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid" unless I am told what food contains it. Can I?

Sorry, just saw AD's post.

However, it should have been in the article in the first place.

Here in Canada we consume much 'Canola" oil which is really rapeseed oil and yet we still have a populace that forgets how bloody awful the Conservative Party is under Stephen "Geniac" Harper and what they have done to country and yet re-elect him to another MINORITY government with only 36% of the popular vote.

How forgetful many are with regard to government incompetence and political arrogance as personified by Little Stephie Gormless Canadian Wonder.

Good post #3 AD. A healthy combination of O3 to O6 fatty acids is 1:2. With the health industry's obsessions with filling us with poisonous polyunsaturated vegetable oils the general consumption is now nearer 1:20 or more and voila! disease.
