IMAGINE a Scotland circled by farms of giant offshore wind turbines with blades that span an area the size of the London Eye. The wind-technology industry was this week given the chance to show how interested it is in building wind farms in the seas around Scotland.
The move is likely to reveal whether wind farms will spring up all around the coast, or whether there is little interest from the industry.

The Crown Estates this week invited applications of interest for Scottish territory waters and is preparing...

Will offshore wind turbines spring up around Scotland?

What a stupid comment, Scottish waters are on the whole very deep and quite impractical for windturbines.

Moreover, for every few windmills you need a pump storage scheme to store the power on windy days, to provide power during the calm, and where on earth do you put a pump storage at sea?

Let's have a level playing field - scrap subsidies and the ROC and then we'll see if there's a 'rush' for windpower!

#2 I could not agree more, this wind madness is all about profit and nothing at all to with the energy requirements of Scotland.

Tidal not wind is the answer.

"PROFILE

THE first offshore wind turbines in the UK were built 15 miles off the coast of Scotland."

I think this is incorrect - I believe the first UK windfarm was built off the Welsh coast.

2# 3# Have you seen the price of oil recently? Oil is also needed to move coal about the planet, oh and gas is running out faster than the other two! We have the wind and we don't need to beg or borrow from anyone for it! Doesn't that appeal to you in the slightest?

Save finite oil for where its use is irreplacable, don't waste it to produce electricity when there are other, cleaner, better options!

4# You're living in a dream world, there are limited sights and the ecological impacts can be huge compared to the energy produced - just because you can't see the damage doesn't mean that it isn't there!!!

5# The first UK offshore wind farm was two wind turbines near Blyth in Nothumberland

"IMAGINE a Scotland circled by farms of giant offshore wind turbines with blades that span an area the size of the London Eye."

Imagine them on the many days when there is not enough wind to produce anything.

Imagine repairing these thousands of eyesores after every winter.

Imagine electricty prices at least tripled to pay for them.

Imagine 200,000 pensioners dying each year from fuel poverty instead of the 24,000 we revel in.

Thanks for the info on Blyth. - my google search obviously threw up the wrong info.

There are a lot of windfarms claiming to be the first it seems or it's just poor reporting again.

What a lot of Luddites all negative and offering no other solutions.Wind power and tidal power can help break the strangle hold of the middle eastern nations. This is clean energy no pollution.I thought we scots were more adventurious than this bunch of naysayers.

Just a thought but since oil is apparently running out wouldnt that leave lots of big platforms already secured to the sea with room for pump storage and repair facilities in a handy location to service offshore windfarms?
Green power AND recycling? Christ I've gone treehuggie...
