ALEX ARTHUR has confirmed that he will be heading for Las Vegas for three weeks of training in preparation for his world title challenge against Joan Guzman next month, writes BRIAN DONALD.
Currently the WBO's interim super-featherweight champion, Capital boxer Arthur was given the green light by Wayne McCullough, the Irish ex-WBC Superbantamweight champion, to fly out to Nevada on Wednesday.
"Wayne phoned me and confirmed that
I should fly out to Vegas to prepare for my May 3 world title challenge to Joan Guzman so I plan to jet out there to start my preparations as early as possible," explained Arthur.
"Wayne will get me sparring with boxers who have styles similar to Guzman while I'm over there so that when I come back to Scotland I will be really sharp for what is my biggest fight as a pro and a champion."
Meanwhile, Arthur's only conqueror as a pro, Manchester's Michael Gomez, took time out from relaxing at Glasgow's SECC arena after having outpointed Coventry's Baz Kelly on Saturday to offer Arthur some advice about his forthcoming fight with the champion from the Dominican Republic.
"I believe that Arthur has the punch power to beat Guzman but he mustn't repeat the mistake he made against me at Meadowbank five years ago and try to go for broke to impress his fans," said Gomez. "He should box Guzman for a few rounds, then try his heavy punching. I hope he wins because Arthur is a very good fighter.''
