Medical expert calls on shops to downsize wine bottles

SUPERMARKETS should stock half bottles of wine to stop middle aged people drinking too much, a leading doctor has warned.
The drinking culture, particularly among professionals, can be targeted by reducing alcohol portions in the same way consumption of supersize meals is discouraged to combat obesity.

Trish Groves, deputy editor of the British Medical Journal, said the drinks trade should be part of a similar debate to that currently faced by food manufacturers. She said: "I like a glass of good wine with my supper. But, once two of us have had a glass each, it is all too tempting to finish the bottle there and then.

"Coupled with the news that wine is getting stronger, with eight or nine units in a bottle, it is no wonder Britain's middle aged middle classes are getting wasted."

A recent report from Liverpool John Moores University showed wealthy towns top the league table for hazardous drinking in the UK.

"middle aged people drinking too much"
Its their choice and they ARE old enough to decide, what they drink!
A 'Teen' will 'Laugh in your face' at this proposal!
And purchase 4 half's!

A Middle Aged Adult, will say...'F,U' and purchase a crate!

Better being 'Drunk' unlike the People that are trying to legislate these 'MAD' Proposal's!!,,

Because..'Quite Frankly' they have gone,

'BANANA'S'..it must be the..'RUM'!!

Bananas in pajamas are coming down the stairs,
Bananas in pajamas are coming down in pairs,
Bananas in pajamas are chasing teddy bears,
'cos in Supermarkets they all try to catch them unawares!

thats ok Charles but then they are old enough to not get any NHS help if they develope sclerosis. It is known wines have more alcohol by volume content than a few years ago. As for better being drunk comment that is precisely the reason we have to have curbs of some sort. On the other hand people who would rather be drunk probably do not have the wit to know they are getting half measures.

Excess alcohol causes all sorts of illness. From liver damage to being a cause of alzheimers. Unfortunately, in this country we cannot seem to control our intake and may have to have it done for us. Otherwise more illness and deaths including murders etc. Not to mention ambulance time, NHS hospital waiting lists. If some want to over indulge then they should go to the back of the queue as they have made that choice by their lifestyle.

I have had two relatives die from excess intake and one who has early onset alzheimers due to it. I know all alzheimers is not caused by this but it is known brain cells are damaged. Now perhaps that is why many get drunk due to having smaller brains and loss of self control.

If it is choice that people buy half bottles - what to stop them buying two or three - maybe a 1/2 bottle o white with the washing up then a half or red with TV later...pathetic chattering......

fife runner @#5,

Je vous suggère d'analyser ce que vous dites, avant de tenter d'analyser moi!

And Furthermore,
I also have relatives, that have died as a direct result of drink related illness,
We also have 'loved ones' who everyday will go out and purchase Three 3litre Bottles of strong cider and consume it today, this is also 7days a week and they are on benefit's!
Think of the weight of 3litres of cider and carrying it on the bus home,??
But they DO, and they have Friend's who join them with their 3liters!!!

But try telling them! its like talking to a 'Brick Wall'

This half bottle idea is a,
'Ridiculous piece of unconceivable Nonsense'
And WONT solve or achieve anything!!
Apart from achieving more, handling, packing and waste problems!

I DONT write in these columns for 'FUN' but when you get ridiculous ideas such as this, you can only give them the contempt they deserve!

Aren't you just sick of reading tripe this this (not you Charles, the article I mean)? With due respect, can't these so called 'medical experts' please spend their energy finding a cure for a multitude of more serious life-threatening ailments and let those people old enough and informed enough to drink themselves to death if they so wish.

Making half bottles of wine available is fair enough. Taking this high-handed, patronising, nanny-state position is most certainly not.

Isn't a bottle of wine about right for two people? I certainly would have thought so. Sometimes, I'll drink a bottle of Chardonnay myself---then have a beer or two. It's no big deal. I don't do it every single day so it isn't a problem.

Like JayDee Tee says, these "experts" should be working on something more worthwhile rather than patronising the masses. Boy! would I like to meet some of these nannies face-to-face in public and make them account for their behaviour.

What's wrong with corking the half empty bottle & puting it in the fridge for another day???

Yay! Bring on the half bottles!!! I hate opening a bottle of wine and leaving it half drunk.
#11.It never tastes the same the next day or even worse, a few days later.

Today's Vote

Do you think it’s a good idea to raise the legal age for buying drink to 21?
Yes, it would help fight the teenage drink problem
No, it would penalise those 18-21s who are not a problem
It would make no difference to underage drinking
