NINE people are being hospitalised in the Lothians every day because of physical and mental problems brought on by long-term alcohol abuse.
The figures, released under Freedom Of Information laws, showed that patients had to stay in hospital overnight 447 times in 2007, where the alcohol they had drunk was a factor in their condition.

It was the first time in three years the number had fallen, but experts are not optimistic that the Lothians is turning the corner in its battle against alcohol abuse.

Tom Wood, chairman of Action on Alcohol and Drugs in Edinburgh, said: "This is just the tip of the iceberg. An enormous amount of alcohol-related damage is being dealt with in GPs' surgeries and within families and communities."

Earlier this month it emerged that the number of times teenagers had to stay in overnight due to alcohol had risen by a third last year, with the biggest increase in the 13-14 age group as 20 boys and 28 girls were admitted.

Overall, the number of under-18s who ended up staying in hospital because of alcohol soared to more than three a week.

I would like to know why, given the recent claims by both Tom Wood and a leading police officer that alcohol related problems are 20x greater than drugs related problems, Tom Wood has not spent a proportionate amount of time during the past 4 years of his tenure on alcohol issues. Probably not as "sexy" as talking ad nauseum to the chattering classes and selected audiences about "recreational drugs" like cannabis, cocaine etc.. Thank goodness he's going.

#2 Might I suggest a reason. It's probably because the drugs scene is unregulated and the alcohol scene is heavily regulated (in theory, at least). The regulator for licences, licensing court, enforcement and policy is a combination of Edinburgh Council and the Police (both his employers). It would never do for an "expert" to pass comment on the unworkable policies, regulation and deterrants involved in the alcohol trade when they are both political master and paymaster. Funny how principles go out of the window under these circumstances.

Alcohol is even more dangerous than a lot of other hard drugs, reqular drinkers who become alcoholics without realising it,usualy they suffer from loss of memory, damage to the brain,to the pancreas liver, kidneys and heard problems. Most alcoholics suffer also with anorexia and a mumerous of other types of diseases. Alcohol in the begining of the last century used to be an ilegal substance and i can see ,quite clearly as to why it was ilegal. We all know as to how agressive people became, partiqularly when they go over their limits, they become provocative and abusive with other people, resulting geting in to serious worthless fights, and arquments with other innocent people and in manny times for no apparent reason.Fights may take place practicaly everywere, normaly in bars pups restaurants, clubs and somene times outside to the streets, let alone at fights at home.It is also quite nessesary to say that reqular heavy drunksters could became very dangerous pchycopaths in a very short time after they serpassed their limit.Bare in mind alcoholics in general, once they stard drinking, they normaly find it very difficult to stop, alcohol drives them in to madness, and in their moments of mudness they could kill or cause serious bodyly harm to anyone who happens to be arround them. Further more you will notice they will start eating their words,or to start talking very loud about things that make no sence at all,and some other times they could even start shoughting and screaming like wild loose animals. It will be good to mention at this point that alcoholics they drink non stop throughout the day and night, thus why most of them end up uneployed, living on the doll, some of them end up having nowhere to sleep, you will find a lot of them accomodating them selfs in to puplic toilets parks underground stations, backyards, under train bridges, and a lot more serving in prisons.Quite honestly victims of alcohol they all end up living a very raugh ,and sad life. One thing our youngstrs so

Would you give up drink if it meant you could live past your 100th birthday?
Definitely – it would be great to live that long.
I’d like to, but I haven’t got the willpower.
No way! If I gave up booze I’d feel about 200 years old.
