Long-term alcohol abuse puts nine in hospital every day
NINE people are being hospitalised in the Lothians every day because of physical and mental problems brought on by long-term alcohol abuse.
The figures, released under Freedom Of Information laws, showed that patients had to stay in hospital overnight 447 times in 2007, where the alcohol they had drunk was a factor in their condition.
It was the first time in three years the number had fallen, but experts are not optimistic that the Lothians is turning the corner in its battle against alcohol abuse.
Tom Wood, chairman of Action on Alcohol and Drugs in Edinburgh, said: "This is just the tip of the iceberg. An enormous amount of alcohol-related damage is being dealt with in GPs' surgeries and within families and communities."
Earlier this month it emerged that the number of times teenagers had to stay in overnight due to alcohol had risen by a third last year, with the biggest increase in the 13-14 age group as 20 boys and 28 girls were admitted.
Overall, the number of under-18s who ended up staying in hospital because of alcohol soared to more than three a week.
