BLUE MITCHELL

Blue Soul

**

Riverside 088072305083, £8.99
One of the often forgotten figures in jazz of the Fifties, Blue Mitchell was a trumpeter with a fiery, boppish playing style which made him a popular sideman on the New York scene. This 1959 album sees him leading a line-up which also features Curtis Fuller (trombone) and Jimmy Heath (tenor sax), and is an ideal introduction to his forthright and rather dry trumpet sound. It will certainly give foot-tappers a workout, but the "soul" reference is misleading as that is one quality that seems to be lacking.
