TWO teenage girls were at the centre of a rescue operation last night after plunging off a cliff south of Aberdeen.
The incident is believed to have taken place as darkness fell at the Mill o' Muchalls cliffs, which are 80 feet high.
One of the girls landed at the bottom of the rocks and suffered suspected back injuries, coastguards said.
Her companion was stuck halfway down and was unharmed but "very frightened," said the coastguard.
Rescue teams were working to reach both girls last night.
After emergency services received a 999 call at about 8:40pm, two search and rescue teams from Aberdeen and Portlethen were sent.
A rescue helicopter was also scrambled.
The girl who fell the furthest would "probably" have to be airlifted and flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, a spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.
The heliport at the hospital was understood to be prepared to receive the patients last night. It was not known what the girls were doing on the cliffs.
