Sanny,

Portugal. 07/12/2007 01:12:27

The Law has been broken; Wendy has admitted culpability; a formal complaint has been made to the police. Surely the police have a duty to investigate the alleged crime regardless of the electoral commission decision.

Perhaps politicians – well Labour politicians – are above the law. By the time the police do start an investigation, if ever, all the evidence will have been destroyed and fictitious documents generated, ass, for the covering of.

Compare the police action with that in England where Mr. Darwin returns from the dead, there is a possibility of fraud so the police arrest him at 1:30 am, within 24 hours of making himself known. As far as I’m aware no one has yet made a complaint against this man. The police are acting on suspicion only.

This is not a question of party loyalties, we should all be asking the police why the delay? Their inaction strikes at the very heart of a democratic Rule of Law. The law must not only be done but must be seen to be done without fear or favour to rank or station.

In my opinion, there is the reek of corruption emanating from Strathclyde Police.

Karin M #6: I wouldn't waste my time. The actions of The Scotsman over the past week have made them a laughing stock w.r.t. independent journalism. No-one will forget it. Leave them to it - continue to post. Like Wendy, they are fast becoming an asset to the SNP.

What happened Labourman Publications. Embarrassed by The Herald into re-opening of post on Wendygate.

What should also be investigated is all the "hidden" money contributed in time, people and materials from Trade Unions during Labour's election campaign.

#9 - they would rather carry their masters word for the sake of all the advertising spend from local authorities and their southern titles.

The crediblity of this paper has cascaded right down the cludgie!

I would like to petition the goverment to ask it to change it's name, as it is the most Anti Scottish rag going. In name it's the Scotsman but certainly not by nature.

Souter should buy it, He could hand copies to his travellers ofor free, he could save on advertising spreads, get phone calls from Gordon Brown each day or MI5 to tell him what to print. Then lpass them to Alex to laugh at them.

#2 Sanny is spot on. The Mouth of the South has actually admitted breaking the law; so what does it take to get the police to take action against an admitted law breaker?

If the police fail to take any action, they will be aiding and abetting a criminal act.

Sleaze and corruption is more or less endemic among New Labour in the west/central Scotland. The failure of the police to act on The Mouth's criminality is going to leave people wondering if that same sleaze and corruption has spread to them.

Gregor Addison,

"Ms Alexander's team has admitted breaking the law." Have they? Last night on Politics Now Jackie Baillie drew back from admitting that the law had been broken, although she did say that Labour Party lawyers had identified Wendy Alexander as the "donee". If that is the case and the law was broken, as most people seem to believe, then surely she must be responsible. There is no point casting around for others to blame, such as David Whitton. There is an attempt by her supporters to suggest that Wendy Alexander is a victim. We are now forced to endure sermons such as the 'Let he who is without sin' plea. This parable might teach us not to seek unreasonable vengeance but it's no way to run a justice system. If the law on donations has been broken, then measures have to be taken to ensure that others do not flout the law. Surely, that is all we ask.

Lastly, good to see that the Scotsman has at last allowed the public to comment on this story, having spent all week trying to prevent debate on any forum to do with Wendy Alexander's donations woe. It beggars belief that the Scotsman ever thought this was reasonable. Perhaps now they will explain why they took this measure.

22

Scott_B,

07/12/2007 07:53:12

Karin M - ALL papers are biased. All news is biased - that's a given. By reading a spectrum you'll get a flavour of what might really be happening.

No-one will tell you what is actually happening for every situation.

23

JayJay,

07/12/2007 08:08:55

"However, Ms Alexander has protested her innocence, claiming she will be cleared of any "intentional wrong-doing" because she checked the legality of the money with Charlie Gordon, the Glasgow Cathcart MSP who solicited the donation and was assured it was legal".

I thought we had moved on from this utterly banal defence? Surely someone, somewhere in the legal fraternity can place a call to wee Wendy just to let her know that "Wendy's law" isn't in the statute book yet, but if she hangs on several months, they can work on it.

Meanwhile, all those boys in Barlinnie, jailed for handling stolen goods, will be busy preparing a new defence, and claiming a retrial, simply because they didn't "intentionally steal" the goods they were caught with, because the man they got them from "assured them" they were not stolen.

The handling of this situation demonstrates Wendy and her team are unfit for office, irrespective of the action/inaction of the boys in blue.

24

McMillar,

NE 07/12/2007 08:39:18

Salmond doesn't need to get involved with this and he's just having some sport. Prob more of a dig at Brown than anything. If she goes then Labour will be in tatters. No doubt there are some young bucks lining up to take over but for the good of scottish politics we need more continuity. The next person will be no better.

25

Nick_Byrne,

Glasgow 07/12/2007 08:42:26

She should step down, as should anyone implicated in this. You canoot hide behind the "I had not intentions of breaking the law" nonsense.

Cut out the rot and start again - no political party should be seen to tolerate corruption or incompetency in its ranks and I would think the voting public would react positively to a party seen to be willing to police itself fully and without being forced into it by the opposition.

26

Boy Wonder,

07/12/2007 09:04:35

Alex's intervention couldn't have been all that dramatic or this would've been a lead story on the front page.

What's that you say? The Scotsman don't like saying anything good about Mr Salmond? Can that be true? Surely not?

As for the female half of the Alexander brothers ... what she's saying is ... "I'm as guilty as hell, but I did nothing wrong ... Someone should be scalped for this monumental cock-up!"

Anyone got any relatives amongst Native Americans, who might be handy with a tomahawk? Send them a pic of Wendy!

27

Ubi,

And not a murmur of censure within the Labour ranks for what is, at a minimum, a highly tacky incident.

Quite the reverse actually, 100% support for breaking the law.

Meanwhile, 40,000 members of the inconseqentia have been fined £100 each for the "crime" of putting out their bin on the wrong day.

No Wendy, please dont go, stay where you are and keep making the Scottish Labour Party an even bigger joke than it currently is. You are the best election agent that the SNP could wish for.

36

Gregor Addison,

Scotland 07/12/2007 10:56:33

#30, Jimmy Choo

She quite clearly stated that the Labour Party's lawyers had made it clear to them that Wendy Alexander is the 'donee'. Jackie Baillie then shied away, however, from admitting that anything illegal had taken place. She would not even answer the question regarding whether or not the law had been broken. It was a mantra of 'grace under pressure' and a clear attempt by Labour to suggest that Wendy Alexander is, somehow, a victim.

This morning on Radio Scotland I heard a minister from Partick offer his thought for the day, seemingly adding to the Wendy-as-victim metaphor. He used the 'let he who is without sin' plea; whereas this might be apt for staying our hand from vengeance, it is no way to run a justice system. If we adopted this policy our jails would be empty and we would all have to face Annabel Goldie's wrath.

37

Alastair the First,

07/12/2007 11:32:02

I reckon this story has only just begun. There are a lot of questions arising from the various donor scandals - such as why these people were donating in the first place. What were they trying to gain? Which planning applications were nodded through as a result? What does it cost to buy a Labour MP or MSP? I think I see why the SNP need to recruit 1000 more police - they will be needed by the CID and the Fraud Squad to process all the matters that are now coming to light.

It'll be a shame to see wee wendy go! Dewar was half competent, McLeish was an arrogant fool and a crook, McConnell wished he was a nationalist, but Alexander is a bit of everything. Although she's maybe a bit short at being half competent!

Mr Salmond must've thought all his Christmas' and Birthdays had come together, when the hapless Alexander took the helm!

Wendy’s Lament
(To the tune of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Memories”)

Half-wits,
I’m surrounded by half-wits,
A cabal of complete ditz,
Who can’t even spell check.

You’d imagine,
Someone would’ve known, the rules for the cash.
Intellectual pygmies?
We’re awash!

Backbench,
Once again on a backbench,
‘Cos I’ve stirred up a real stench,
But who could fill my shoes?

McCabe or Jackie,
And nine, nine, five Charlie certainly can’t!
I’ll have to stay then,
It’s what London want.
