Indeed, #1 Dragonhead, I had the same impression of the surreal when I looked up from the Yangtze River boat to observe the markers so high up. The idea of towns, villages, farms representing thousands of years of civilisation going to be under water was I think, and still is, repugnant to the Chinese. This is not solely an environmental issue but an emotional one as well. The prospect of the Yangtze River project being faulty is tough to swallow. Rest of the world take note!
Made in China
looks like there will a dredger permanently employed to keep the silt at bay. Maybe there is a flat area away from the dam wher the silt could be barged to, dumped and used as good growing material. There is no question the chinese require the energy[1.3billion people], i was there many years ago and the place was dark at night, nae electricity at all [chairman Mao, little red book time, awful]; They are also looking to build 2500 coal fired power stations, without any precaution, pollution on a scale unheard of in the past. The difference now is that we know how damaging it will be, they care not........Compare that with the offer from the govt. of Guyana, requesting UK help to maintain their virgin tropical forrest...... way to go!!
Get a couple of Polish blokes in - they will sort it!!
I wouldn't like to live downstream of that dam.
Several very negative observations above.
But we all know that the dam is now there. We all know that China is industrialising very rapidly. We read about the number of coal fired powerstations that the Chinese are building to provide power. We read about the relationship between Coal power and Climate change.
There may be people that would rather see that China built even more fossil fuel powerstations, and it might have been good for the environment that the three gorges project had never occured. But this is now history.
We have to admire the industrious capability that has led to the completion of this project, and accept that the Hydro power produced will be " clean" power, in scale greater bu no different to the "clean " power that built California, as a result of the Hoover dam.
China's power industry is the most polluting in the world - second is South Africa.
"New laws require dam projects to undergo environmental impact studies and provide opportunities for public comment and oversight." - as likely to happen in SA as it is in China.
The new labour spin on it would be "worlds largest white water site planned for Olympics".
Dear Sirs, Unfortunately this Dam reminds me when centuries ago man tried to construct a tower to reach heaven, today known as the Babel Tower. I am one for the use of modern technology, and China desperately need means to controll flooding. But the displacement of millions, archeological sites , and ancient temples..... is a terrible price to pay. A series of many smaller dams, eventhough not as spectacular, would probably have saved everyone from this colossal fear and threat....... Thank you, respectfully, Leticia
More sour grapes from the English lap dogs. The Chinese are progressing. Your country has been on the skids since WW1.
Wonder how long it will be before the world discovers that the damn was built using "dangerous" chemicals, and all the water passing through it is contaminated, and deadly to all life forms. You know, the Chinese way, just like they do with toys, food, clothes, and just about everything else that comes from that, "we don't give a damn country." As #3 so accurately wrote, made in China, aka, big trouble soon to be had.
I doubt you ever think of being one of those hundreds killed by floods each year, the damn simply shifted the annual deaths to a single event that people can point fingers at, its a lot harder to blame anyone when hundreds die and thousands of homes gets destroyed from floods.
The real issue is lack of engineering foresight in the design phase, not the construction, kind of like those who designed the magnets into Mattel toys, obviously some commentators being the media watching masses don't really care so long as they get their hand on some tasty bashing material, but at least don't make yourself look like an idiot (eg. keystone)
12. Taz,
Yes, we are all so sick our government even supplies healthcare free.
Its obvious an American would side with China - being the worlds two worst human rights offenders.

We also flood you occasionally just to cull your numbers. But the Hispanics repopulate so quickly it hardly seems worth it.

The biggest criminal against human rights in the history of the world is by far the UK. I would not expect an uneducated pea brain like yourself to know any better. I therefore intend to treat your moronic posts by firstly considering their source. Perhaps if you go and watch some cartoons or something you will have a better understanding of what passes for your grey matter is attempting to digest.

Hi, not to many years ago it was something like 200,000 that died in the floods. This dam is nothing but good news for the Chinese people who have been taking the shaft for centuries. It also reminds those countries whose grasp on perceived greatness was to loot and rob them in the name of the British people, that they (the Chinese) are on the ascend and that their has been country has long been on the skids. ....What goes down, comes around. Before too much longer their kids will be immigrating to China in order to earn a decent living.
Taz
Many years ago the UK had a more questionable past, although that largely was the norm at the time, as Americans were still scalping each other.
Your cartoon comment has to have been prompted as you have the experience of living in the nation producing the most cartoons. A similar conclusion can be drawn about you from your nation being the largest producer of porn.
Yanks is just a typo.

Although your US of A is guilty of causing more innocent deaths around the world since WWII than all regimes combined, a country responsible for the "Simpsons" can't be all bad.

No denying that. However, since the UK has, as you put it in [12], gone down the tubes, her place as #1 despoiler of the globe has been firmly and enthusiastically taken up by the US. Touche, I think..........................................................
Think again. Take a look around the world and you will see most of the trouble in it is a direct result of British greed. Now the rest of the world (Primarily the US) is doing the clean up. You people have a lot to answer for. From what was Burma to the Mid East, from Pakistan to Africa. American blood and treasure is paying the price.

Your healthcare is not free. Not only is it not free it is a basket case. You really are the biggest nonothing in this forum.

The US taxpayer has spent billions on research to produce accurate weapons. In part to reduce collateral damage. The US is the same country that defended Australia from the Japanese when Churchill wouldn’t return any Australian infantry to Australia from the European theater during WWll. They were needed to defend the UK according to Churchill. You are obviously not Australian. You are one of those economic refugees that ran from Scotland with your ass hanging out your pants to Australia, and with a subsidized boat ticket.
