Well Heather, I guess it is because the supermarkets are all sold out of rat milk.

As Prof Tester said, "...They just don't lactate the same volumes", so presumably the scarce supplies would be expensive too. Not a problem for the likes of you though, eh?

Typical assinine comments from a spouting no-nothing who believes that celebrity, what little she has, is directly related to insight.
She casts aspersions on milk while defending air travel. Let that speak volumes.

10

James F,

East Ren 20/11/2007 02:05:05

Despite the largely puerile comments above, Ms Mills is essentially correct. Production of meat and milk wastes an enormous amount of energy and contributes twice as much to greenhouse gases as travel of all sorts.

The rats' milk thing is to make you think. That's asking a lot for some Scotsman readers.

Romulus and Remus were supposed to have been suckled by a female wolf. Whether you call her milk glands udders or not is probably udderly unimportant.

12

Yok Finney,

"Requirements for rats seem to be around 15mg/kg of food. Calcium, Vitamin D and Phosphorus are essential, especially during times of growth, pregnancy and lactation, for the laying down of bone and production of milk. One of the best sources of these minerals in the diet is curly kale. If unavailable this can be substituted with other green leafy veg (such as spring greens, pak choi, broccoli)."

To me, it's absurd that a general purpose animal like humans could have evolved from an ape which is a specialisation for living in forests. This is a weird notion from "Darwinists" , never from C. Darwin himself.

Are we not closer to intelligent and omniverous rodent life? So are we eating enough curly kale -from our own soil! - like the Scots of old who were renowned engineers, scientists, shipbuilders, doctors, warriors etc.

Cod liver oil is good for rats; us too + we need orange juice vitiman C as unlike the rat we don't produce it.

But rat's milk from some stainless steel dairy? -- Somehow, I dinnae think so.

Contemporary Scotland boasts only few pop stars and footballers from our urban wastelands of supermarket pap, junk food, and silly fads.

The native peasant dietary wisdom of our great grandmothers is needed to restore our standing on the planet as is the case with all independent successful nations!

13

Rats milk - mothers milk to Ms Mills -- Why give space to that woman. She's only of interest because of media space given to her time as a hooker - whose interested for heavens sake?

14

Anonym,

somewhere 20/11/2007 04:47:47

So according to animal rights group Viva, "meat and dairy animals produce more greenhouse gasses than all the world's transport combined", and James at # 10 assures us that this is essentially correct...

James also tells us that the question about drinking rats' milk is to make us think. (Funny, I thought Heather was actually proposing we DRINK the stuff, and while we are at it, to stop eating meat, dairy products, and fish, but not to go vegan overnight.)

Look, we are not about to solve environmental problems caused by forest depletion (presumably our growing grain instead of trees is the 'root', ahem, of the problem, as opposed to millions of farting cows?) by going vegan!

# 12 Yok, I've got to quote your last paragraph:

"The native peasant dietary wisdom of our great grandmothers is needed to restore our standing on the planet as is the case with all independent successful nations!"

Have you gone completely mad? Do you suppose we'd have more engineers, scientists, shipbuilders, doctors, warriors, pop stars and footballers if we ate more home grown curly kale? Is that what all the independent successful nations are doing?

Lets suppose we entertain Ms. Mills's idea. How do you suppose to promote a rat's lactation? Well, she will need to deliver a bunch of rats in order for lactation to occur. Now, what do you suppose we do with the little rats, which are produced in a huge number per litter, hmm? As usual, these celebrity types are airheads and give no consideration whatsoever to the things they utter. They run at the mouth and think because they are famous, people will give heed to their sage-like advice. I wish that it might be possible for them to put their advice into action and that they are only ones who get to live out the consequences of their suggestions.

20

Proximaking,

When is she to appear on the Simpsons as a rat milker gang master? Sounds like she believes every daft thing she is told much like most other people, problems are rarely solved as simply as popping down to the bins to catch a rat to squeeze onto the cornflakes in the morning. The problem with all this stuff is we don't live a hunter gatherer existence any more and most people really would rather be dead than have to live like that again so engineers will have to engineer us out of this hole and they will. So let's enjoy the laughs while we can, we'll look back on these times as hilarious, unless you happen to be down for being machetted today, or shot, or blown up but let's not bother about these people let's talk about rat's milk. Maybe we should only be left alone with a rat that has breast fed us at least five times. Wasn't there a rule from Egypt about that recently?

Have you gone completely mad?

At heart, no. Diet and nutrition could be the most important thing you've never learned. It should be the core element of secondary level education for which the leaving age should be ~ 16 + or - , since very little else seems to learned by most youth despite the money taxpayers spend on it or get fleeced by the private sector who don't do it any better.

So I suggest civilised unhurried school dinners with linen tablecloths, waitress service, respect and politeness for a nutritious plat du jour previously explained and discussed in the class room. Pupils could also get involved in the preparation and cooking of it: not as a gang or mob but as individuals charged with responsibility.

On the western seaboard people regularly lived to near 100 (unless calamity struck) despite their arduous life and the wet climate because they eked it from the land and sea about them. Then roads were put in bringing white bread, sugar, tins etc and all manner of urban diseases appeared. My great-granny was a peasant fae County Cork and lived to age 96 in darkest Fife and its bone-chilling haars.

Successful Countries.

Exhibit F: Finland -- changing lifestyles made their traditional diets too fatty and salty so their government (which was only your neighbour doon the road you might meet in a sauna) were serious about getting them to eat more berries and fresh stuff and it worked.

Japan: food is considered very seriously. Would anyone have worked on the new Osaka airport if they didn't get a proper lunch whether neatly packed, or in the canteen? No way.

Rats would be on ~ 20% life expectancy if they were fed supermarket food of refined carbos, sugar, salt and e - numbers. These intelligent omnivores are telling us something important. No?

41

FarmerBob,

Edinburgh 20/11/2007 09:13:45

Liquid milk consumption in Scotland has increased by four percent in recent years as real experts recognise the role that milk and dairy products play in a balanced diet. Ms Mills has probably helped to accelerate that trend - thank you Viva.

Heather Mills said, "that dairy production had a huge effect by producing greenhouse gases.

Mills said: "When [Viva] told me it was 18 per cent - that's more than all global transport - I was in shock."

Greenhouse gas emissions are as follows, (given as percentages of the total, in terms of CO2 equivalents):

for all agriculture 13.5%
for all transport 13.1%

(Source recent IPCC Report ay4_spr_spm.pdf fig.SPM 3)

The impacts of dairy farming on the environment are real, but Viva do themselves no favours by supporting their claims with false information.

It's unfortunate that Heather made two remarks which obscured some important information that is not well known by the public. 1) The first unfortunate remark was the one about rat's milk -- which I believe to have been joke; and 2) the second remark which diluted the impact of her message was her stating that Viva gave her the statistics on the effect of the livestock industry on global warming.

In fact, the statistics Viva provided Ms. Mills come from a United Nations FAO report issued by the livestock group in November 2006 called "Livestock's Long Shadow." In this report, the livestock group of the FAO made the uneasy (and I say uneasy because I don't think they wanted to make this conclusion) conclusion that the overall value chain involved in the production and delivery of meat and dairy contributes 18% of greenhouse gases, more than all world transportation.

In fact, the UN report recommends that addressing the damaging effects of the livestock industry is so important, that it should be one of the top 2 - 3 policy issues of all governments worldwide. http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/news/2006/1000448/index.html

Today, we see global governments focusing on reducing emissions in industry and transportation, but, apart from the UK, not drawing any coorelation between eating meat and dairy and climate change.

And so while it it true that Heather Mills is no scientist, the people who put out the report and the people who provided information for the report 1) are scientists and 2) by the nature of the fact that they are part of the livestock group, were reluctant to make such conclusions.

It is unfortunate that the press focused on Ms. Mills remarks about rat's milk and attributed the source of the statistics to a vegetarian group rather than the United Nations.

First, listen to the message, not the messenger.
Second, the only reason cows give milk is because they are impregnated. Most calves are taken away from the mother. Many of them are killed. The milk is for the supermarket, not her baby.

Huge amounts of money are made by the dairy industry. They have brainwashed people to think they need 'mothers milk' even if it's the mother of another species! One person said to me "But what will my children drink if not milk?" How about water!

Thanks for that informed comment. Can you shed any light on the apparent discrepancy between the FAO and IPCC figures I gave above (#49). I note that you state that the 18% figure is for meat and dairy, whereas Viva are reporting it as 18% from just dairy. Aberdeen Dan (71): "As for rats milk, I would think that would be much less efficient to produce than cows milk, but if heather gets up to do the milking . . ."

Surely Heather should have suggested human milk as the substitution, not rat or dog. It would be simple to provide lactation hormones to, say, unemployed and poor females, such as Heather Mills after she has paid her legal bills. We could arrange collection via the supermarkets: women would go to Tescos (say), connect themselves to a milking machine in return for a store voucher per cc of milk provided, and the store would then treat the milk before bottling.

Any acid will damage concrete. Even a relatively mild one like lactic acid will disintegrate concrete slowly. Thus sour milk, fruit juices and beer (which also contains lactic acid) will all attack untreated concrete over time.

How can you NOT see the truth????

The plan is to bring Scotland back to full employment by being the fore-runners in the production of rat milking machines. Parents will be able to hire out their kids in the factories because their wee hands are needed to attach the itty bitty suction cups to the itty bitty tubes. Before long, everyone will prosper on rats' milk and have strange, slanting yellow teeth.

But no! Can it be true? Scotland has been tricked. Heather Mills and Viva will come back to denounce the CRUELTY of battery rat milking. All the wee furry creatures squashed in cages like um.. battery hens. Their crippled little legs all bunched up, so they can't scurry through primary schools, running free and biting the ankles of small children. Instead, condemned to a life of teat tweaking in a tiny cage, dripping milk on the rats below them. Except for the rats on the bottom, who get very fat from drinking everyone else's milk.

Then George Bush, who will soon announce the abolition of presidential elections in the US, simply because he can't figure out yet another way to screw an election in his favor (and besides, the monarchy isn't that bad is it) will attain the official title, King of America and Some Other Places that aren't America Yet. Heather Mills will take her leg off for him, convincing King George that she is a messenger from God with special powers. He will promptly declare Scotland a hotbed of WMD manufacturing and terrorist training. About a million people will tell him otherwise, but sadly when he bombs the life out of Scotland, they bite the dust along with everyone else. He builds a new castle in Scotland, declares it his ancestral home, spends $30 trillion dollars on a monument to the bravery of the now extinct Scots, and turns what was Scotland into a Texas beef ranch.

The rats run free and all become politicians in London, but nobody actually notices the difference.

This is all as clear as day to a

hahahahaha!

Oh, that was a good one, great punchline! I knew it was coming when the article started using Simpsons episodes in relation to her.

Rats milk - okay Heather, why don't you show us how to? (I believe she was probably querying why we drink the milk from one animal and not another - but hey, its Heather Mills, who knows what goes on in that head of hers.)

God Who?? Just because something is a tradition it doesn't make it right.

And as for all the highly unpleasant, derogatory and discriminatory remarks about Ms Mills on the basis of her sex and disability that just says tons about the prevalence of colonial/patriarchical world views on this rant-board.

# 56 - yes, I doubt very much that the UN is lying about the contribution of cows and animal husbandry, transport and feed contributes to global warming - though perhaps Ms Mills and Viva could have been clearer about this. But then maybe she was and it was just the usual irresponsibility of journalists trivialising a very serious issue, which perhaps we all do need to think about: do we all need to eat so much meat or drink so much cows milk? I don't think HM was planning on banning it, just asking people to think about the issue. And the rat milk thing was obviously a joke - she could have said goats or sheep but the whole issue would have gone unreported.

The focus on HM keeping her big car running while being interviewed is another trivialisation but probably reflects her need to know she can escape from the beastly throng of paparazzi after speaking - and not be killed by them like that other celebrity 'air-head' was in Paris.

-- Give me one logical (i.e evolutionary) reason why a general purpose animal could not evolve from a specialist animal?

happens all the time and vice versa.

No it doesn't. Living in a jungle requires the same specialiation as the Innuit Eskimos.

There is no vice versa. Specialation depends on the continuation of the surrounding environment that you understand. That pygmies know so well.

Unlike the monkeys that we call politicians.

Like Kornad Lorenz, I study our local jackdaws and learn alot.

For their behaviour is importantly LEARNED, not instinctive. For they are general purpose birds, that when when you release your hand-reared brood , know how to fly and will circle up, but havn't leaned to fly down because no older bird has told them this technique.

Universe has no size. Electons are high frequency "particles" and galaxies are low frequency events.

Quarks - as is life - are ultra high frequency and now you're talking of gyroscopic synchronisation as a jackdaw plummets by my window.

A pity that an issue of actual worth has probably had more damage done to it than good by the employment of Heather Mills. Cow milk and meat are luxeries as opposed to necessities and the message could have simply been to think about our excessive over-consumption. But of course the focus is actually on Heather Mills' outrageous hypocrisy.

The plethora of UN statisticts defies my understanding. What about our great scottish BOGS that produce plenty of methane that our planet has handled since time immorial Should you drain them and cultivate, even more methane is produced.

People have cattle because they're useful to them. There are far too many sheep in Scotland as ecologial strip-mining from the Shetlands to Dumfries. Working local and useful cattle breeds like Galloways and Highlanders put fertility back into the land. + the Aberdeen Angus which is very good on more lowland grassland.

I was with the local stockman last week and you might be horrified about the number of healthy animals burried in pits, from Shetland ponies to little blackface lambs. Over this last decade.

Scottish farmers get your act together. Be Indpendent of the NFU and DEFRA. No. For they are looking for "compensation" and subsidy.

What can you do with died in the wool Tories that think they know what they are doing? Visit Ireland? New Zealand? Learn anything? No. Because, they were taught to believe this pish in agric. college or Oxbrodge that they knew what they were doing and would make alot of money from it.

Wake up!

Scottish independence is the only future for farmers.

I got the loan of quad bike from our local landowner during a difficult lambing in mud and blizzard.

He's a good guy. But it's no way to do agriculture.

Again, all comments on the "story" about the conference which says parents are now afraid to give their children healthy and essential freedom for fear of being pilloried like the McCanns have been withdrawn.

This form of censorship is unhealthy and sinister. The fact is, the McCanns left their children - all under five - on their own in a flat which was not their home in a country whose language they did not speak.

Is the McCann legal/media machine now censoring the extent to which The Scotsman may reflect the views of its readers? It is my firm view that childrens' welfare, including freedom to play, should be paramount in any family. Not the freedom of adults to play in Portuguese Tapas Bars.

And that discussion is much more important than one about rats' milk.

Forget drinking rat or dog milk. Shut off the car and drive something eco-friendly if you want to make a positive contribution to reducing pollution.

I already knew she was a can or two short of a six-pack, but this makes me wonder if all she has is the plastic thing which holds the cans together. Richard Tester is right. Dogs, cats, rats, and whatever other small mammals she wants to go on about don't lactate enough to produce enough milk for human beings, and the nutritional content of milk from carnivores and rodents isn't going to meet the needs of humans, which are omnivores. Of course, the milk of herbivores, like cows, goats, and sheep, isn't geared for omnivores, either, and humans are the only ones who drink milk their entire lives. If she wants to promote an eco-friendly milk that will be healthy for humans and meet our nutritional needs, promote drinking breast milk.

115

Cheryl,

Heather Mills is a pain in the backside. I have no time for her whatsoever. She is a useless carbuncle on the arse of humanity.

But.....
If you want to question why people eat meat and drink cows milk, it is indeed a relevant question to ask - why drink cows milk?, why not cat's milk?, why not rat's milk?

Nowhere is she actually suggesting that we should drink rat's milk!!

Ignorant journalists pick on certain phrases just to create a story, and a headline. Equally ignorant readers lap it up!

Perhaps she needs a bit of help right now. She might do well with some therapy to help her through the breakup with Sir Paul, soon before some misguided fans start irritating the rat and dog populations.

I haven't seen anything this queer out of the UK since that mentally challenged man killed and ate a corgy in protest. If there is such a thing as PETA in Europe, some of its associates need to address the rudimentary "E" for "ethical" in explicit details to their protestors.

70 Slioch.

The discrepancy you allude to may be because "all agriculture" presumably includes crops as well as livestock.

Livestock do the damage to the environment by producing 18% of all greenhose global gas emmisions - this for meat and dairy. Plants - including crops - obviously redress the balance by absorbing CO2 when they grow. The UNFAO was quite unequivocal about this figure of 18% for livestock production and also estimated global travel as contributing only 8% to greenhouse gas figures.

Another possibility to explain the anomoly is that the IPCC figures were not for all international food production.

Sound silly? Maybe because human beings weren't designed to eat vegetables alone. Human beings need meat to survive. Just plain fact.

Millie M,

The article above about Heather Mills is misleading. She did not advocate drinking rats' milk : she was trying to draw attention to the absurdity of humans drinking cows' milk.

Humans are the only species both to drink milk after infancy and to drink the milk of another species. Yet The Scotsman managed to turn her comments around and miss the point of what she was trying to say.

The truth is that the United Nations report Livestock's Long Shadow found meat and dairy production contribute more to global warming than all the world's transport combined. [Think about that folks]

The campaign Mills is supporting tries to draw attention to this report, since the media don't even pay lip service to it when talking about climate change.
