What we need is for the greedy Maggie Broon to lower the tax on fuel. Every time the basic cost of fuel rises, he gets a bigger cut of tax. The whole thing is getting out of hand and is highly inflationary, especially because of the transport costs in the remote and rural areas.

Does Maggie Broon want to preside over yet another Highland Clearance because people will no longer be able to afford to live in remote and rural areas? Does Maggie Broon even give a tinker's curse about his, supposedly, own country?

I hope the people in Fife remember all of this at the next general election.

unmanned pumps have been available for years in many countries, remote areas of Sweden are one place I know this to be so as I lived out there for 18 months some 10 years ago. These take cards or notes. That idea doesn't need research, it just needs acting on. The big problem is, that as fuel increses, it costs more to deliver the fuel to remote areas. It's a catch 22 situation.

What I want to know is why are we letting the government raise the price of fuel, £1 a litre is ridiculous where are the blockades where are the protests, we are all just taking it like a bunch of sheep.

We produce this stuff for f*ck sake the government are ripping us of.

I want to take my car and ram it down the governments throat, lets all blockade the roads, refinaries, government buildings.

the whole of Scotland should be up in arms over this, I reiterate, my collegue returned from saudi a few weeks back and filled her SUV to the brim for £8.

The problem is the greedy government. Fuel duty needs to be halved.

I say, blockade all refineries, airports and seaports and let no-one through (not even emergency services) until the government back down and agree to an instant general election.

Bring the country to it's knees, then get rid of stupid "new labour" for good and consign them to the history books.

Oh, and GugaII, please don't compare Brown with Maggie Thatcher. Brown bears about as much similarity to Thatcher as paraquat does to tapioka. Maggie Thatcher believed in freedom of choice and action. Brown believes in oppression, manipulation of opinion by means of propaganda and restriction.

Yup Ol' maggie believed in action alright. The Falklands, miners strike busting, privitisation of vital public services (to the ruiniation) and "snatching" milk fae bairns that was sometimes the only feking nourishment the poor b*stards got.

This is a great idea - not only does it mean more petrol stations (which can remain open 24 hours) but if they can do away with the kiosk staff then surely that is a cost saving to pass onto the consumer....

If only life were so simple.
If you don't pay the tax through petrol then you will pay some other way.
Personally I'd rather pay through the pump than through income tax. Its a far fairer measure.

#8:

I see your sentiment but there is no way you can call the level of tax on fuel "fair". It it was half what it was (which the country could easily afford if they stopped squandering cash by throwing lorry loads of it at every conceivable problem instead of addressing it properly) then what you say would be arguably correct.

Let's recap;

- Petrol prices already expensive

- Petrol prices likely to rise for many years to come.

- Someone comes up with "cost cutting" measure of unmanned pumps.

I'm sure no-one will damage these trying to get free fuel.
