Cut.

Down.

The.

Calories.

Have you any idea how long you need to exercise to burn off a Mars Bar ?

Exercise helps weight loss, but only if you also control how much fuel goes down the gullet.

Even if the weight doesn't change tho, a fit fattie is still much better off than a couch potato with regard to health and wellbeing.

Too true. I've gained weight while running 20 miles a week-too bad I was eating enough to let me run 25.

#1 and #2.
Exactly.
Balance of exercise and foods of the right sort. Education and slowley changing the 20th century eating habits so many people gained is the only way to address this.

I exercise three times a day and go for a run on a Sunday. I eat frugally and drink 2 litres of water every day. I like my veggies and eat fruit every day, though not "5 a day".

Yesterday, I weighed myself. I have put on 2 lbs. The weight of a bag of sugar apparently. How's that then? Would any dietitian like to come and explain where I went wrong??

Unfortunately some people are more prone to weight gain than others. I take medication to keep my weight under control but sadly I'm still overweight. I've run 3 half-marathons this year, I eat a healthy vegetarian diet, hold down a responsible management post as well as exercising regularly....unfortunately it doesn't stop total strangers walking up to me in the street and calling me a fat b***ard. People need to understand that while weight is an important issue, fitness and diet come into the equation as well.

Don't despair - you have probably gained weight because muscle is heavier than fat.

I was never sure whether I believed that, but since I started running 3 times a week several months ago, I have put on about 3 pounds, but lost almost 3 inches from my waist.

Measure yourself - it's a better indicator than weight. Which is why the BMI is such a load of c**p!

My mother died at 87 year of age and was fat all her life. My uncle was fat all his life and died at 88 years of age. My aunt was grossly obese all her life and died at 90years of age. I have been fat all my life and not dead yet. All these people had one thing in common they ate good wholesome food. They did not eat take-away crap, choccy bars, quicky deep fried foods, processed micro-waved junk, foods full of chemicals that would kill an elephant.
Being fat is not the problem eat crap to get fat is.

People are only living longer now a day because all the heavy industries have been closed other wise they would be dying of sooner than their parents.

#9. You make a very good point, Mcsnagpile. Mt grandad told everyone he had the body of a god ... it was Buddha, but it was still a god!!! And he lived on to his late eighties!!!

you are all forgetting that as you exercise you will put on some weight as you then start to build muscle which in itself has weight.

so putting on some pounds when you exercise is normal. it is healthy poundage though

that is why it is not reckoned BMI is not giving the correct figure. it is now reckoned that the measurement around the waist should be less than the hips. and the waist should be less than 40ins for men and 35 ins for women.

Cut out all processed foods and refined foods (ie eat wholemeal and not white bread). Eat sparingly and only have a 'blow-out' meal every couple of months or so (like mediaeval feast days). This actually works. Our bodies are not designed to process so many calories.
