#1... now now ! If it wasn't for lawyers, where would we be ...
and don't forget, Kenny MacAskill said in yesterday's Scotsman - quote "SCOTLAND owes an immense debt to its legal profession which has helped people at times of crisis, protecting the rights of the vulnerable and supporting business and economic growth": http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/opinion.cfm?id=1756462007
.. any ideas on that "immense debt" .. you know where to give them ...

Correct !
It should not be illegal to assault lawyers anywhere in the world - they are truly the scum of the earth that would sell out their own children (figuratively speaking) just to 'win' at any cost. They are the very embodiment of the sophystry in all of its forms. in their training they learn how to argue both sides of the same facts for the purpose of prevailing, regardless of the facts. Damn them all to Hell - although I doubt that hell will likely have any of them due to hell's far higher entry standards.
It's a pity the Kenny MacAskill - Scotland owes lawyers big time' article wasn't open for general debate ...
I'd like to see how the SNP v Labour supporters tackle that one, and some reasoning why Mr MacAskill feels we should all get down on bended knees to the legal profession ...

The story is in the online subscription section sadly (appeared in the print edition though), but here's the link, and the first few lines of what appears before you have to cough up to read Kenny MacAskill's words ... *ahem*

'We must all strive to make sure that legal aid works both efficiently and effectively'KENNY MACASKILL
SCOTLAND owes an immense debt to its legal profession which has helped people at times of crisis, protecting the rights of the vulnerable and supporting business and economic growth.
As cabinet secretary for justice, I want the profession to flourish and to compete in the modern world. That means adapting just like any other profession or...
#1, 3, 6, & 8 is Suck McCrunchie trolling using the name of another posters wife. It's dispictable on Suckie's part. Suckie has always been a Troll but he has now hit a low point.
Can't we treat the lawyers here in Scotland in the same way? My family really really want revenge on the creep who mishandled my Uncle Bob's divorce!
So there are lessons to be learned from Pakistan.
Lawyers beaten up and thrown in jail. International best practice is worth emulating.
The steps taken by Musharraf reveal the weakness of the state and the huge contradictions within the institutions of Pakistan. Bhutto, who continues to compromise with Musharraf is holding the masses back in the vain hope that there will be a peaceful transition to democracy. She, like the generals in Pakistan and the Western powers, is also scared of the masses being cut loose and the prospect of genuine people power. In the meantime Pakistan is also in economic crisis with the price of bread which is under the control of the Punjab chief minister is being sold for double the price as the military cartel makes a killing. The trade deficit is $14 billion and oil prices and the economic world situation at the moment are hiking the cost of living beyond the means of ordinary people. Strikes in the rail, water and electricity industries are threatened. Pakistan is on the brink of fundemental change -it can either result in a brutal civil war for power and control which would include the fundementalist and terrorists as well as the generals, all products of the state itself, or - because of the huge support for the PPP to be a genuine workers party, a peaceful transistion into socialism. There is no middle road and the west will be powerless in any situation.
A few years ago this recent "friendly regime" of the extreme utra-conservative Bush, and the Champagne socialist Brown was heading the list off the world's most extreme violators of human rights.
Once the US had "worked" on them and reduced them too servile lackeys they were welcomed into the fold of the "free nations" club.
The same old familiar well worn cliches were once again being trotted out as Pakistan; overnight the former enemy off the US thousands off miles from its shores, suddenly became a trusted and valuable ally.
India, Russia, China and the neighbouring countries know exactly why this sudden change of heart by the US to its former enemy.
More recently, the US have found another servile lackey in the form of the recently elected Right Wing president of France but, will almost be certain too cause many political eruptions amongst the mature people of France sooner rather than later just as it has now done, within Pakistan.
The Us are masters in creating political upheaval in other countries when required and if necessary; will use their overwhelming military superiority to achieve its aims.
As we stampede towards a more dangerous World situation sence the ending off Wold War Two; have the USA, finally bitten off more than they can chew?
We won't have long to wait for the answer!
Former enemies of the US who were later to be trained and armed by them; eventually used their new found skills against the very same US who had provided them with the tools for killing. The bodies off young US soldier victims litter battlefields world-wide, although currently, they now return home in black plastic body bags.
Wattie, for the USA and Britain "democracy" goes out the window when it suits them both and they will support vicious dictatorships in the interests of their own control and power. For example the former military dictator of Pakistan, Zia, was propped up by the USA. Now it would suit the interests of the US for Musharraf and Benazir to patch an agreement for an uneasy peace and power sharing. Even if this was to happen, the masses would see through it. This is an important turning point for Pakistan and possibly the Asian continent.
2. Any excuse to go off on one of your bizarre rants.
I think you have something on your shoulder.
Nice to see stoning is till part of judiciary training in Pakistan. I suppose Sharia law requires it.
Nice chap that Mushie- good pal of Bush, Broon & Bliar. Let's hope Broonie continues in his daze and doesn't decide to copy him if he continues his 'difficulties'.
He could do with rounding up a few lawyers though and put them to useful work- like cleaning our streets and looking after those pesky English 16-18 year olds.
Suck McCrunchie is still trolling the Scotsman threads. He is going around posting under the name of another posters wife's name which is a violation of the terms and conditions.

Yes that does seem to be the same article ... interesting the SNP supporters & Labour supporters havent been allowed to have a go at Mr MacAskill over his words.
As Justice Minister, surely he is Justice Minister for all of us, not just the professions and his ex colleagues ? Deserving of open comment perhaps ?
Sadly, we do not need to look as far as Pakistan to see violence against lawyers. If I may remind everyone, it happened here in Edinburgh just last year, although it seems from the Police investigation, and write ups in the Scotsman since, the suspects who organised the attack on the Law Society's Chief Accountant, were lawyers themselves and have still yet to be caught ...

[The Ranch, Crawford, Texas November 5th 2007. Phone rings …. ]
Bush: Hello… is that you, Dad? How about them Pats, eh?
Cheney: Cheney here.
Bush: Yo, Chainman, loved that Darth Vader costume on your dog Halloween. Heh, heh, heh …
Cheney: Mr. President, General Musharraf has just declared martial law in Pakistan.
Bush: Who?
Cheney: The president of Pakistan … you know, next door to Afghanistan.
Bush: Oh yeah, Pervie…. Has he caught Osama yet?
Cheney: No sir, he has not, and this martial law puts us in an embarrassing situation.
Bush: Uhh?
Cheney: Well, here’s the deal. We are fighting for freedom and democracy across the globe, right?
Bush: Yeh! Let freedom ring, let the sound of…
Cheney: So - General Musharraf has just suspended the constitution, rounded up all the judges, lawyers, opposition politicians, various pinkos and lefties and thrown them all in jail.
Bush: Wow! That sounds like a strong move in the war on terror….
Cheney: We have to make a statement of where the US stands on this.
Bush: OK…what do I say?
Cheney: You say that we regret his decision, but that we understand he is fighting terror in his country and we stand with him. Oh, you better say something about getting the constitution back as soon as possible, etc.
Bush: So tell me, how do you declare martial law? It sounds kinda neat…. Round em’ up, head em’ off to jail, whooee. Lock up them pesky democrats, activist judges and that liberal press… hey, I think Pervie has got something there we can use.
Cheney: Mr. President, you cannot suspend the US constitution….
Bush: I bet if Alberto was still in there, he could fix it up…Hey, I got some brush to cut out here on the north pasture… talk to you later …. Send me the speech you want me to make ….
So what! Time for some of that in Britain. In fact, let's beat, flog and whip everyone who mocks the government and authority of any sort.

"The investigator also kept quiet about identifying those behind it."
Yes, rather odd, considering the rumours of who was involved in it at the time ...
The Law Society certainly didn't stay silent through, as you can see from the SoS article - they held press briefings trying to pin it on everyone from critics to opponents ... good thing the media knew otherwise and let out the spin attenpt ...
I wonder if the Police had a look into the motives of those at the Law Society who tried to implicate people in the Cumming case ... and all the while, Kenny MacAskill gazing on in pride ?

What an astounding series of posts. A dictator suspends a democracy for 165 million people (in a country which has nuclear weapons and suffers from an Islamic insurgency), and all most of you so-called debaters can contribute is a cheer for the beating and jailing of lawyers. Pathetic.

I think everyone understands the gravity of the situation. Laughing at lawyers is the best response most of us can come up with since no one knows how this is going to play out. Sometimes laughter is the best thing when the situation is no laughing matter.
I really wish the Scotsman would do something about all the liberal Trolls like Suck McCrunchie. He is bringing down the threads.

I think you're too kind. It's hard to read comments from posters like#5, 11, 14 and others as an attempt to use humour to mask horror. At least your comment at 36 indicated some attempt at humour. Anyhow, perhaps we shouldn't be too concerned; despite how many lawyers are beaten and jailed, there never seems to be a shortage.

How many names have you used in the past few days? You are one sick Troll.

Suck, why are you posting under 2 ID's?
There is an alternative way to look at this story ...
Apart from the fact that Pakistan can't really be bullied, because it has at least one nuclear weapon (same tried with North Korea, bullying didn't get far) .. we could wonder whether, if the situation in Pakistan somehow, unbelievably happened here, would our lawyers protest as vigorously as those in Pakistan have, even risking their lives over justice ?
The answer to that I fear, is no and is demonstrated time & again, when lawyers in this country, refuse to take issues of injustice into court, either challenging Government, the law, or themselves - unless there is motivation to do so by way of money, or the interests of their profession. I call that selfish, not to be confused with what lawyers are doing in Pakistan, is selfless.

For some inexplicable reason someone has deleted my response to you. Does anyone know what the criteria are for having a post deleted? Mine was neither controversial nor offensive. I'll try to reconstruct it.
I believe the proper phrase for the attempts at humor is "whistling past the graveyard." It is usually seen when a profound but unavoidable danger approaches. In this case the danger is very real and approaching quickly.
Pakistan has atomic weapons. It is inconceivable that the West could let these weapons fall into the hands of the Islamofascists. Consequently, it is reasonable to assume that plans are being put into effect to grab them should the situation in Pakistan begin to unravel.
However, plans are plans, and plans do not always succeed. Now the real possibility arises, not in a few years as in the case of the Iranian program, but in a few days, terrorists could be in possession of nukes. God help us all
