In Alaska, we drive for about 6 months with out being able to see lines. Of course, we are usually happy to just have a general idea of where the road is and often have to crash though snow drifts just to get to work.

Ooooooooo this sounds just a tad risky. I can see in the rural areas like those single track roads with the little passing places but in a town?
I suppose the only way to find out if it works is to try it, and see whether the accident rate goes up or down.
But they still badly need an Aberdeen by-pass.
This is nothing new in Argyll, the council haven't renewed a white or yellow line anywhere for years.
Except when they dig up bit road. You shoul see the size of the parking bays!:-0

This was tried in Norfolk a few years ago and had a dramatic effect on speed and crash reduction. As Neil Greig says, opposing drivers tend to slow and "negotiate"their way past each other. Of course, there are always the exceptions where perfect drivers exercise their right to drive like a maniac but lines on roads never moderate them anyway.
Middle of the road drivers will love it.

What a stupid idea. What does Health and Safety have to say about it? I hope any drivers involved in accidents will sue the Councils. Also think about the tourists who now won't know where their side of the road is.

My first thought was also for the tourists - I've spent a lot of time driving in Scotland, and losing the white line is going to cause havoc for we foreigners! In North America, one is only allowed to parallel park in the same direction as traffic flow, one way to indicate which side of the road your car should be on. Without the white line, there are going to be some very confused and therefore dangerous drivers! On the subject of tourists, I often thought that along with the L for Learner stickers for cars, you should have DAT stickers - Dumbass Tourist :)

HSE would do a proper risk analysis and conclude that it is safer to do away with road markings despite being counterintuitive.
The fact is that road markings are so good in the UK that motorists rourinely rely on them to the extent of ignoring other indicators. It's prats like NorT who do not use evidence based judgement and who suggest that suing the council is an alternative to personal responsibility and driving properly
