.....He said: "Transport currently accounts for over a quarter of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions.

If he looks at the DEFRA web site he will see the figure is around 20%
Energy industries and 'other industries' produce around 60% of the UK total CO2 output.

Not to detract from the story, but I wish Govt would use their own websites!

Indeed SS. 20% from motor transport, almost 28% toward food production and haulage (accroding to Farmers Weekly Analysis), leaving 52% for all other industries.

These will be the same ministers that moved Scottish Office departments out of Edinburgh, and now have to travel outside of the city to visit the offices?

The truth is that (regardless of what we believe of their usefulnesss) they will rightfully be able to justify that on a trip by trip basis, it made sense to go by road as it is the only flexible mode of transport for business travel!

For them to try to tax other users off the road is ridiculous.

On November 10th 2006, I went to hear Jack McConnell speak at the British Academy in London. I thought he spoke well.

After his talk, I walked over via Whitehall to get the tube. The walk to Whitehall is, at most, a quarter of a mile - a 5 minute stroll. It was a nice day, and the walk is quite scenic, just along the edge of St James Park and through Horse Guards Parade.

Consequently, when I walked by the Scottish Office in Whitehall I was amazed to see Jack McConnell emerging from a large, chauffeur-driven car. Obviously I don't expect Mr McConnell to be heading down the tube, or waiting for a No 11 bus. But I do remember feeling a bit disappointed that the First Minister of Scotland, aware of the importance of climate change, preferred a car journey to 5 minutes walking.

However, on 30th January 2007, in a speech at the 4th European Microsoft Government Leaders Forum, the First Minister is then quoted as saying 'Action to protect our environment and combat climate change is necessary at every level of government - but there is a need to change individual attitudes and responsibilities too...'. Hmm, yes, sounds like there is a need.

I'm not a Jack McConnell hater, and I agree with a number of the policies he has introduced. But you can see why people get cynical. Do as I say, not as I do.

Alas, it is the same everywhere. Government elitests, without exception, want every one else to do the sacrifice. They aren't green they are greedy every one! Throw 'em out and start over!

are the rumours true that one of salmond's key election policies is replacing them with a fleet of london cabs? with a timer on them he should have no problem beating his 04/05 personal record. such a busy man, so much to do, completely understandable.
