Not sure I fancy The Queen .... seeing the movie I mean. I'm more for big movies with special effects.

I didn't like Red Road and I don't get what others see in it. Maybe I'm just sick and tired of West Coast bias in this country!

One by one they trotted out for their awards and all said the same thing at their acceptance speech, quote i am humbled to be in this company.
I believe them!

Usual tired old process rewarding all the true blue thespian socialists for their undying opposition to the Iraq war, tireless criticism of GWB, tiresome adulation of Prince Tony and NuLab over the past year. But I didn't see Puttnam waving his handy red flag anywhere - was he out demonstrating somewhere against the climate change?
But AJ Fife is right in a way, they used to be nice palumpaloons! They're worth an award themselves.

Dr Mike,

Films that portray living characters are always so awful, they make me cringe. Sorry Dame Helen, you bombed in my opinion. Who on earth would pay to see that? let alone own a copy on DVD!

An award ceremony for luvvies giving other luvvies awards, hosted by Jonathon Ross, has to be the worst kind of television. So the BBC and the BAFTAs should both get awards for plumbing new depths of sycophancy.

It's just another example of the divided society in which we live. All those "stars" in one room, every one up for a quick £3000 fee for advertising Tesco or M&S. Makes me sick.

Nice to see so many with their minds on higher things. But even better to see Hellen Mirren recieving her just desserts at last. I was begining to dispair that this fine actress was being overlooked. Well done Hellen. I dont particularly like the subject matter of the film , but cannot deny the power and sensetivity of her acting.

Dr Mike,

The BBC showed this ridiculous ceremony blow by blow at primetime on Sunday evening. That's an insult to the British nation. Hosted by a grossly overpaid buffoon. It should be another nail in the coffin of the TV licence.

How the British nation has become zombified by the spell of celebrity!

Dr Mike.

For goodness sake. What a jaundiced view of things you seem to take. If you don't like what's on BBC-1, watch something else instead. Or read a book.

Personally, I thought it was fantastic to see the Scottish film "The Last king of Scotland" doing so well at the BAFTAs last night. A wonderful start to Kevin MacDonald's directorial career!

Regarding the cult of celebrity, the real blots on the landscape are "Big Brother", "Love Island", I'm a Celeb, get me out of here" - and other mindless programmes of that ilk.

Fine British actors like Mirren, Dench, O'Toole and Daniel Craig are a great credit to this country. It's good to applaud them.

An Oscar for Peter O'Toole is long overdue! Maybe a lifetime award at the Oscars this year?

17

EWB,

UK 12/02/2007 12:00:34

Well done, the former Elena Mirenskaya, especially as she has come to recognise the services the real Queen has performed for 55 years! Not that those leftie luvvies would wish to hear this or all those who demonstrated conspicuous compassion at the time of the demise of Diana, Princess of Wales.

18

Scaramouche,

12/02/2007 12:09:10

I always watch the BAFTA's litany of those who have passed on in the last year and was unpleasantly surprised to see a few I did not know had passed away. You tend to grow up with the people in the Movies or in Music and identify with them, so that part is always sad.

Ian Richardson was not there, obviously being the first casualty (I know of) in 2007. But, When Helen Mirren spoke of him and her voice breaking with emotion, followed by the applause in recognition of the man, I was never more proud of a fellow Scot and Edinburgher. It seems he was a well respected actor and a well-liked man. Thank you for including him, Dame Helen. You are indeed a gracious lady.

I am assuming you mean the awards ceremony itself and the overpaid buffoon that is Jonathon Ross? It is the comcept of celebrity for its own sake that is a travesty - shown by the number of garbage TV shows like BB, I'm a Celebrity etc. Certainly people like Helen Mirren are accomplished actresses and she deserves the awards she gained.

The mutual backslapping, carefully rehearsed acceptance tears and incestuous self-congratulation is one thing but did the BBC have any real need to endlessly repeat shots of the luvvies this morning?
And will it all be repeated again on this evening's bulletins?
It's not as if Mirren could nip round and replace the washer in my kitchen hot tap.

As a former Edinburgh and Wemyss girl living on the banks of the Tennessee River, I indulged myself last night and watched the Baftas - it was edited to one hour and minus, thank goodness the red carpet extravaganza. I did see the Queen - did not think that it was best picture material but Helen Mirren was superb as the Queen.

29

AJ,

Is that with reference to her name or the fact that St Mirren FC are a bunch of diddies!!??

You boys haven't been the same since that sex topic yesterday! I think Bonnie Laddie has now been sectioned and sedated!!

I like Helen Mirren - loved Prime Suspect!! - and at least she's a PROPER actress!!

Last King Of Scotland is a great (if largely fictional) movie, go see it.

All awards shows are rubbish , lets face it.

The Queen isnt a bad movie either by the way but I think the UK only made about 5 movies worth mentioning in the last year anyway so It was bound to get something.

32

AJ,

Fife 12/02/2007 16:34:16

Can't believe they've taken off my comment at no 1!

I was just remarking, I thought it was a gross piece of mis-casting, as the real Queen has never had the volumptuous breasts that Dame Helen clearly has!!

What's wrang wi that!

33

Kath,

Fife 12/02/2007 16:48:51

The Queen was a very good film, as was Devil Wears Prada, excellent acting by all. Funniest film for ages though was Little Miss Sunshine, if you missed it make an effort, well worth seeing.

Seems peculiar that United 93 can win an award- the video Loose Change 2nd Edition-available on YouTube - shows quite clearly that this event did not happen-http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article14946.htm

I see what these poaters have become. Evan as they accuse showbiz luvvies of being tranformed into mindless zombies caughht un in the cycle of incestuous self-ciongratularoty excesses, which, incidentally, show folks have ALWAYS been involved with, these sourpuss posters seem to have overlooked the fact that they have become mindless zombies themselves, programmed by dullness to find fault with everything and everybody.

I do not attend the cinema any more, but were I to go I would certainly see Mirren's portrayal of Betty Windsor, because Mirren is an artiste.

A little advice to the venters (God bless them one and all!): I turned to the Baftas and after seeing enough I watched a re-run of Midsomer Murders. Unlike the venters, I have a small device that fits into my hand and by pressing different buttons, different programmes are displayed on m y TV screen.

I just wonder who is controlling someone who watches a two hour plus presentation loathing every minute of it. They remind me of a mad uncle who always sat too close to the fire. When his legs became uncomfortably hot he would cry out, "Somebody move me! I'm burning!"

If yer nacky tamms are smoking, why not shift your position?

A brave new world?

Help!

Heading home soon .........

I must apologise, also, as I have not seen the above mentioned film!

Don't watch Award shows. They are usually just an excuse for bimbos to spend disgusting amounts of money on clothes and turn up with their knockers hanging out.
Read a post where someone watches Midsomer Murders, surprised they can write, that show was made specially for the brain dead.
Don't watch American crap either. prefer documentaries, Time Team, Wallace & Grommit, Golf, Pot Black, etc. Would like to see some Shinty.
