The Truth is Out There,

Ma Hame 30/01/2007 11:26:42

Did the fire take the leaves of the line.

Another week another bad week for the railways. There must be some way i can blame this on First Scotrail, Oh I can't their latest figures say everyone loves them.

On another note why is the Bus Station still closed?

Ham Shank,

Edinburgh 30/01/2007 11:44:49

This affected me coming in from Longniddry today but I was loving it because I had already slept in and was going to be late anyway. Provided a great excuse for the boss.

Steven,

On First ScotRail's journey check the incident is a "broken down train"! hmm I would tell the truth and say "due to a serious incident involving an EWS freight train" pass on the blame!

"They were pouring water from their hoses on to the flames."

Someone give this eyewitness a job on the TV news - that's just the sort of observation that keeps the 24-hours news networks in business.

Aye,The railways aint doing to well,But when have they,Cant wait to here all the excuses.

6

Scaramouche,

Flamin' trains, eh? Must've given a lot of people a bit of a "freight"!!

7

John Milton,

East Lothian 30/01/2007 13:39:31

Although this has absolutely nothing to do with First ScotRail I've no doubt whatsoever that the media and the masses will blame them regardless, as was the case with the derailed sleeper in Princess St Gardens a few weeks ago, again this was down to Network Rail and not Virgin, GNER, or First ScotRail.

8

John Milton,

East Lothian 30/01/2007 13:41:16

Oh yeah and I've a feeling Freightliner have the contract for the car trains although I could be wrong, perhpas DRS or EWS. The cars appear to be Peugeot and Citroen too.

9

Scaramouche,

30/01/2007 14:16:15

Chorus:
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm due
I think all the burning flames are a clue.

Freight train, freight train, comin' round the track
Freight train, freight train, like a smokestack
Flames are a-licking all around
Heading into into Lothian towns.

(Chorus)

One more thing I'd like to see
Lots of firefighters waiting for me
Hoses raised like a watery salute
And water pouring like out of a chute.

(Chorus)

I don't know why my train's all aflame
As I'm going towards old Drem
The fire's destroying lots of motors
Hope there's a journo taking photers!!.

(Chorus)

I thang yew!!!

No!! The thunderbolt and lightning is very very frightening!

Yet again the railway is immiediately given the blame for this. Has anyone considered that it may have infact been a faulty car on the load which caused the fire and hense all the delay's? I think that people are all to quick to jump to the conclusion that it is the fault of the railways.

20

riumreh,

East Lothian 30/01/2007 16:01:38

"busses" !! You would think the EN reporter would at

least check his script with a spell checker!

21

the runt,

#2 your name gives it all away! I take it you sleep-in alot then?

23

Skinnybob,

At hame 30/01/2007 17:39:29

If the cars were destined for folk who live near the neds in Craigmillar / Niddrie the fire has at least sped up what was likely to happen to them anyway.

24

jimt,

east lothian 30/01/2007 17:48:14

#2 what excusse tomorrow then?

25

jetfighter,

As someone who works on the front line, I would like to thank all todays customers for their patience and I am truly grateful for not being shouted at or abused, this is a first! Everyone was exceedingly calm and polite, well done.

Dvr,

Coincidentally, this train 6X38 caught fire at Oxenholme on 3 Oct 2003. The cause on that occassion was an aerial being left raised on one of the cars, which arced on to the overhead live wires (which are at a voltage of 25,000V). So, on that occassion, not the fault of the railway, but the car loaders.

If this had happened on a road, the road would also have been shut due to the risk of the fuel in the cars or the diesel in the tank wagon exploding. Obviously there has been extensive damage caused to the track and overhead wires, which will take time to repair

It is a testament to the ruggedness of the rail vehicles that the train was able to be cleared shortly after 1200, just 2 hours after the fire was extinguished!

27

wicked247,

edinburgh 30/01/2007 18:47:56

it makes me sick when people make comments about railway. i know that some times that passengers get a bad deal but us workers on the
railway have put up with abuse either verbal or assult.
I work for the rail industry I enjoy my Job why don't the public work in my job for the day they would not last

28

Euan,

Edinburgh 30/01/2007 19:06:59

It would be quite interesting to find out how the fire actually started.

30 odd cars catching light on the back of a train is very bizarre..

Would have been quite a spectacle seeing it all go up though!!

29

Stuart Daniels,

Liverpool 30/01/2007 19:29:31

John Milton, I'm afraid you are wrong. EWS now operate all car trains in this country having won the Ford contract back from Freightliner a couple of years ago.
The train involved today has never been operated by Freightliner

30

Stuart Daniels,

Liverpool 30/01/2007 19:33:02

#7 How can it be an excuse?
Do you not believe the evidence in the picture? People are way too quick jumping on the bandwagon before they know any of the facts.
