This is an absolute disgrace. These bam pots ought to be locked up in their house and a squad sent around to their house to smash everything in sight to compensate for the damage that they have caused. Mindless idiots and fools.

2

rosford,

fife 08/01/2007 12:09:24

Our nanny state nation offers no consequences for disgraceful behaviour. The law is indeed an ass.

3

Arthur,

Dec 1st why has this taken so long to hit the news?
I would agree with 1) except that most of the stuff where they live will have been bought and paid for by their parents / zoo keepers. Isn't it terrible what a lack of imagination and abject boredom can produce in
morons.

4

"Council leader Ewan Aitken today condemned the website YouTube on which the video clip has been showing, for allowing yobs to "glorify" mindless violence."
Talk about shooting the messenger. I expect Aitken thinks it should be covered up. He is so used to covering up the abuses and mistakes by his administration he thinks its the norm. Well done YouTube and the EN.

5

The DJ,

08/01/2007 12:17:16

This incident is shameful. However, it is unfortunately indicative of the state of Princes St these days. Countless burger joints, bargain bookstores, drab retail clothes stores have made our famous street a haven for drunks, "buskers", neds and tourists. Instead of spending millions on trams, why not properly redevelop Princes St?

6

The DJ,

08/01/2007 12:18:23

I should say that I did not mean to group tourists with the others in my post #5 - I truly pity what they must put up with.

7

Jakey Rowling,

Thankfully their IQ in identifying themselves on camera should see this resolved, though doubtful that any punishment will be satisfactory.

Totally agree, the root cause of this behaviour is down to the governments lack of management for this country, if someone in this "restaurant" (not sure this word is correct as it provides rubbish!). actually stood up thp these thugs then they would be up in court!

They know that they can get away with almost anything these days, the authorities are not insterested in solutions only covering up the problems.

It did come to light on 1st December when police where called but sadly as it is a weekly event in area it is not really newsworthy. Only reason it's in paper is due to YouTube footage

10

AndyJambo,

08/01/2007 12:37:20

#8 I watched this video at the weekend and a member of the public did actually stand up to these thugs and was quickly attacked by a young boy and then a young girl. He then had to run behind the counter and hide for his own safety.

Now that they have been seen on video by the police,They will have a laugh when,If they are cought will be released laughing at the justice system,Bang them up in a padded cell each and pour ice cold water over them befor they go to sleep,And then first thing in the morning,If that dont cure them,Stop feeding them.

12

To answer #5. Princes Street won't be redeveloped because the World Heritage people stick their noses in and stop any cleaning up for fear of removing some moss from 1874.

16

Swilly Tisher,

Could there , I wonder , be a dietary connection between fast food and the throwing of chairs in true, donnybrook fashion ? Poor kids. All they really need is a bit of hugging from David Cameron and Annabel Goldie.

17

shuggee,

Could it be just that kids will be kids - like all teenage groups since the 1950s, stuff like this happens.

Government's fault, council's fault, everyone's fault except your own... You lot make me chuckle.

18

Daft Old Git,

19

Taras Schevchenko,

08/01/2007 13:12:51

It's the gulag for these childrens' parents....and I mean children!

I have no doubt their parents have been missing in action and they've failed their kids badly.

This is not a NEW phenomenon: punks, mods, rockers, skins, casuals etc in the past decades have always been around looking for a sense of togetherness that a gang provides. They seek to boost their self esteem by robbing others of their dignity and they look to prove their loyalty to their gang by either fighting other gangs or random victims.....and then you have BOREDOM.

What's new is the happy slapping culture of mobile phone technology - I think Ewan Aitken shouldn't be attacking the technology, it makes him look like a fool that's too cowardly to stand up and say what needs to happen to these kids for their own sake and improvement and the welfare of normal people.

If it was the good and the great in this country being affected by the yobs the laws might be a bit more effective.

Extreme I know, but, introduce the birch and the chairs will go under the backsides and not above the heads.

For the sake of the kids that have staged this mini-riot they should be sent to some kind of heavily broadcasted Boot Camp (or at least community service) to hopefully make them turn their lives around; because if their lives keep heading in this direction ....it'll be the gulag eventually for them.

It might sound like I feel sorry for these little suckers but if I was working at BK for minimum wage I would have wanted to put their domes in the frier.....now that's what I would call a happy meal.

20

R,

08/01/2007 13:14:28

The gradual and systematic breakdown in law & order, discipline and respect stems, in part, from the complete lack of discipline set down and enforced at a young age. This country has, for the last generation, shied away from corporal punishment at schools. The prohibition of smacking & belting and the adoption of "polictically correct" touchy-feely 'discipline' (as recommended by the current batch of child psychologists) has exacerbated this. In effect, this has removed the 'consequence' element of a childs actions. Children have realised there are no longer any consequences for their actions and hence feel they can get away with extreme activities to amuse themselves. This country will have to get tough and bring back hard discipline.

21

Repton,

edinburgh 08/01/2007 13:14:37

Like something out of the movies.I`ve said it before and will again that untill the police and courts are given the go ahead to clamp down on these people with an effective deterant it will only get worse. The do gooders methods have been tried tested and failed .Action must be taken.A Scottish Parliament worth it`s salt would pass laws which would make these people who perpatrate these acts think twice.

22

Messalina,

08/01/2007 13:18:16

I'd like to know why the public an staff RAN??

They should have tackled and grabbed these little b******s by the scruff of their necks and held them till the police came.

I certainly wouldn't have run away! You have to tackle these little sods primarily to show we are NOT scared of them and they are NOT getting away with antisocial nonsense like this. Are we wo/men or mice??

23

Swilly Tisher,

Loch Maree 08/01/2007 13:18:43

If this is typical - and I fear it is - then Auld Reekie is no longer the civilised capital of Scotland. Far better for that title to be transferred to peaceful Perth where the only noise to be heard on a Saturday night is the gentle lapping of the River Tay.

24

Peter 100,

08/01/2007 13:24:10

Is that right Messalina, why should the staff risk getting a kicking because that's what have happened amd then they would have all pressed charges for being assaulted by the staff

I aint no detective, but if you check the user who posted the clip on Youtube profile you get: kennygnewey. Kenny also gives his surname - how helpful. Not only that, but if you then search Google for the username you get a few nice pictures of Kenny and I'm sure there will be plenty of other titbits around that can be used to track the naughty boy down! And I'm sure he'd squeal out the names of all who attended the riot.....

28

Zoobee,

up the hill 08/01/2007 13:35:07

#21 Melissa - The reason both lots ran is you cannot confront these 'kids'. if you lay a hand on them it's assault, and because they are probably under 16 then it's child abuse. not a very useful thing to have on your record as you will be charged (being a responsible adult) and they will get off with it 'cause they're kids and don't know any better.

bring back national service and tech kids how tough life is (and they might actually learn something useful at the same time)

#28 : Nobody knocks a burger out my hand and walks away unchallenged. If someone reckons they can a swing a chair over my head, I don't care what age they are...I am, as we all are, permitted (within the full remit of the law) to use appropriate force to defend ourselves.

32

bikerider1,

08/01/2007 14:08:36

why are you all knocking these poor wee kiddie winkies. they were merely expressing themselves through the media of street art, showing that society alienates them and strips them of any sort of equality with the mass clongomerats that hold the sway of poverty over them and so deprive them of the right to free speach.

my god arent these lemsips strong

33

Zoobee,

up the hill 08/01/2007 14:15:29

#31 - R I totally share your sentiment but these are kids and come under a different section of the law.

I used to live in Easter road and witness 'kids' vandalising cars on a daily basis (including my car) I was informed by the police that I could tell the little beasties to 'please leave my car alone and run along you young scamp' but I was not aloud to physical restrain them and prevent them from doing further damage.

once the police arrived (normally about 2 hrs later but on occasion they did get there within 10 mins) I was informed that there was nothing I could do as the kids were under 10.

personally I'd like to see them sentenced to hard labour (them and their parents) but unfortunately we live in a society where kids not only know their rights but they also know how to exploit them.

34

Aileen,

08/01/2007 14:20:18

Seems we need curfews for anyone aged 16 and under, bring back the belt and let teachers discipline kids the way they used to, let the Police do their job and not tie their hands, stop kids from having all the rights, fine the parents, working or not, fine the kids, electronically tag them, make them do work to pay for the damage, stop smacking them on the wrists when they come before the Children's Panel and saying 'poor you'. If we don't start doing something now then it will be us, the responsible adults who will be walking around in fear of the youth of today.

35

R,

08/01/2007 14:24:24

I've seen some 16 year olds taller than me - and capable of doing some serious hurting. However, I'll be sure to pause and ask their age before I decide how to 'defend myself'.

What a bunch of losers....I was expecting the little tossers to get their finger paints out next.....Barney the purple dinosaur clearly failed them as kids.

Notice that none of them were jumping the counter to nick any food......they're not that daft.

43

Arthur,

5) This has nothing to do with the causes or cures for the problem, although I agree on the fast food culture.
7) Hopefully true, and very true
8) Can't blame goverment for everything can you, This is down to parenting and teaching self respect and respect for others. With you I would stand up to these yobbos and have done in the past, but what if you have your own family to protect, or are to old to be effective against them.
12) I quite agree
13) How long has get it sorted been running and what has it acheived. I fear it is yet another marketing ploy by the press.
14) Yes
15) yes
16) Can't argue with that, but it seems to me to be escalating and is probably already out of control, The depths todays youth will dredge is far in excess of any youthful, mischief I got up to.
17) They seek to maximise their profit not run safe establishments.
18) You cannot meet violence with violence these brats would wear it as a badge of honour, they would be getting the attention they lack even if it is negative. Furthermore most of the people working for these fast food slave drivers are little more than kids themselves, some of them might wish to respond as you say, but why should they for the pittance they are earning especially in relation to the vast profits these franchises earn.
Figures, a raw burger costs 12p BK pay 17 year olds
£4.25 per hour what does a burger in a bun cost and how many will that establishment sell in a day.
19) Corporal punishment is never going to be a solution to this, it never was in reality and was usually unjust and not proportional. There are many carrots and sticks which can be used but the solutions are far more complex than I have space to elucidate here.
20) You do not have the guts to say it but you are really talking about corporal punishment aren't you
as stated above you are wrong, I do have many suggestions which may constitute a solution if any one with the power wil

#2, your comments are a complete contradiciton in terms.

You claim that we are in a nanny state, however you claim that there is a lack of consequences.

Surely if the Government and the courts were to get involved in creating even more consequences they would be giving more creedence to the nanny state claim.

43 Continued
lapels and said hello, hello, hello what's all this then.
perhaps followed by a token unsuccessful chase and an order for two bacon double cheeseburger meals. what do you think?
26) If that's your best response I would not have bothered.
27) very useful, I hope the law is as resorceful as you.
28) Most times I have found you don't need to lay a finger on them, they back down when confronted on the odd occassion where one has been foolhardy enough to attack me I have had to defend myself
and no court will penalise you for that as long as you can prove you did not strike first.
As to National service, something like it is a part of my lengthy soluton but the military does not want them and they would only be a dangerous encumberance to an overstretched professional volunteer military such as we have in this country.
29) Oh too much for me I would not dream of discuusing this or any other matter with someone who so obviously demonstates a far greater intellect than my own. Why don't you stand for parliament, and hopefully take the Home Secretaries position, you are just the kind of leadership this country needs.
30) Just in case they have too much on, why don't you give them a hand?
31) I agree entirely, but not everyone can.
32) Many a true word spoken in jest, but they have only deprived themselves by not taking the education on offer an being supported by their listless, selfish parents in bucking the norm.
33) your last point is in error neither you nor the kids nor their parents have any rights in this country.
34) "Seems we need curfews for anyone aged 16 and under"
Very good penalise the law abiding as well, then the yobs have won
"bring back the belt" No, and I have already said why.
"let the Police do their job and not tie their hands,"
Yes but this requires changes in the law.
"stop kids from having all the rights"

47) Well this time round we both got the pain but I also got some pleasure, he didn't unless he's a bent wee perv, as well as a yobbo.

It's high time vandals (the few that are caught!) are forced to pay for the damage they cause - all of it!! How often do you read in the paper that someone has caused £1000 worth of damage, is ordered to pay back a fraction of that and then fined £50. If they are too young, get the parents to pay. They had the wee sh!tes and if they made a mess of raising them it's their fault.

It's time for my program to end Arthur - seems a shame though, couldn't you give me an extension. I've been having such a good time.

So what we should have done is stuck all these Bams together using Bam Stick , thrown them in the Bam Pot and then had a Whopper Flame Grilled Bam with Fries.

Arthur,

83) Have you got one as well, look after it they are much sought after and very rare.

A very interesting read with lots of possible solutions to this horrible phenomenon. May I just make one comment, as a parent? I am an older parent, educated, I don't drink, swear or do drugs, I have been very involved in my son's upbringing, lots of consequences etc., and yet my teenage son has turned out very troubled. He hasn't caused any problems outside of home, but still expresses the same feelings of hostility, boredom, anger, frustration and discontent that these yobs do. I realize that probably a majority of these kids come from bad homes, but please don't put all of the blame on the parents, all of the time. Sometimes, it really isn't their fault.

Rather than lock them up identify them and make their parents pay for the damage maybe some politician can bring in such a scheme and maybe then we can teach these morons a lesson

What is happening to Edinburgh - so called number 1. place to live.

The youth of today are idiots, whose to blame, government, parents (for sure), schools?

Can't wait until these idiots are Edinburgh's local councillors.

99

kellie,

Kenneth Norman, how brain dead can you get? Your pals will love you.

Anyone remember the gangs in Edinburgh in the 1950s. One was called the Valder gang, I forget the rest. Any ex members around? Tell us about the gang fights.

How about the fights at The Palais in Fountainbridge? Very regular, especially when the Yanks were in Leith. When the patrons left when the dancing was over they had to walk through a semi-circle of police. Anyone remember? The Palais reason for closing was that they were not prepared to stay open for the type of clientele using the facility.

How about the Locarno mirrors being broken by a drunk?

How about Tony's of Picardy Place, you had to be very careful in that place. Sit beside or talk to the wrong woman and get beaten up. No mercy.

Same thing in Fairlies on Leith Walk. Nuff said.

This sort of thing has gone on for a long time, in Edinburgh, it is not new.

I shudder to think what these scumbags will be like when they eventually grow into adults and have kids(they might have them already..)

Misery for everybody several times over..

All pretty depressing really...

Ned culture, I find it embarrassing for them that these neds think it fun to do something like that. Really, it is a bit 80s to smash a place up, maybe they thought they were in a MayDay protest with the posh neds.

They won't get caught, and if they do they won't be punished and will be very pleased with themselves at being so "big" and clever. I suggest they get put in a cage in Edinburgh Zoo so we can observe how these animals behave as it is clear they just want an audience for their thick behaviour.

bring back the birch,

This is yet another in a long line of depressing stories about anti-social/criminal behaviour that will result in nothing happening to those responsible.

It's about time MSP's started earning their money and doing something for the law abiding citizens of scotland, by bringing in new laws to actually punish the louts, and start getting some of the scum off our streets.

106

Arthur,

08/01/2007 22:33:35

99) Kenny norman's mates are as brain dead as he is, this was a laugh for them and they had the means to keep it for posterity. Not for a minute would he think that putting it on the internet would lead anybody to him, he wanted to show his kind what a big man he is.
Doubtless in the little minds of his kind, he is and will be even more so when punished.
As to the gangs of the time you mention, which seems to be a bit before my time, I would say having been there at least for part of it, they are just greatly overrated, I refused to be part of that, and suffered at there hands becuase of it, until I learned some martial arts and stood up to them, they were in reality every bit as much of a sick joke as the little yobs of today, only they knew when they were about to go too far, this lot will stop at nothing.

107

Jayess,

Edinburgh 08/01/2007 22:34:11

What interests me is that from a group of 15 to 20 youths rioting within an enclosed space, our police manage to catch 2 or 3.

I have watched this in other circumstances, when they come dashing right up to the site of the fray, with lights flashing and sirens screaming. Apparently hoping to frighten the offenders off before they arrive - saves on paperwork no doubt!

All that stuff on TV about some going round the back, before the others rush in at the front is hooey. I have seen the kids await their arrival, so that they can taunt our portly polis to try and catch them.

Thank your wonderfull politicians for those thugs as they don't appear to be taking this problem seriously enough.
This is what you get when you don't deal effectively with those thugs in the first place.
No creditable deterent, no decernable law and order.
Enjoy.
Jack, this wasn't one of your son's parties, by any chance?
Ha! Ha! Ha!

Incidently, are those supporters of the trams aware of the park & ride facility at ingleston.
As a result of storm damage to the roof, which ocurred on hogmanay, the elaborate ticket office come shelter has been closed indefinately. Problems with the original build and/or the rectifying of the damage, apparently.
What's it got to do with the trams you may well ask? Apparently, they're the people who'll be building the tram infrastructure.
I don't think the evening news knows about it yet.
PS.
The drainage system or lack if it is a cause for concern to.
How about a new name for Edinburgh.
One step forward and Five steps back.

Anybody seen a programme called Brat Camp on C4 ?

Basically, they take a group of cheeky/rowdy teenagers to a boot camp in the USA for a few weeks and whip them into shape, teaching them some manners and just turning them around into nice decent people.
Be a good idea to inroduce that here!

Ever since we did away with the belt at school (a HUGE mistake!!!) and the do-gooders have had their way, discipline in the UK has gone down the pan and now cheeky teenagers are having an easy ride to cause as much trouble/crime as they want and this needs to be reversed, or incidents like this will just become common. Sadly!!!

#1 - I agree The police should be allowed to seize belongings such as games machines, mobiles and mp3 players and destroy them. And those arrested must know the names of the others who took part and should be kept in custody until they reveal them. When they are convicted i hope its not a soft fine or community service either.
Princess street is becoming worse and a larger and regular police precence is needed.

It is all very well Cllr Aitkins saying parents should take responsibility and I agree they should, but if the parents happen to be ignorant or abusive that is just not going to happen. It is time that the authorities took control of these kind of situations and implement harsher measures - at the moment children have too much power and they know it.

122

Jimmy (Edin),

09/01/2007 12:06:08

the laws are just too soft against such crimes, especially those committed by teens. even if the police managed to hunt these teens, nothing will be done. with the presence of Youtube, more and more teens and creating a "record" to put up the "best gig" for the public to view.

The parents of these teens should be prosecuted, along with these trouble makers, send them to a island on the west. Let them have a Battle Royale. Seriouly, no counselling, therapy would help these people.

Arthur - I am grateful for your summation of all the postings and your insightful comments on the postings.

As for "the moon is a balloon" poster - Is he on drugs, drunk most of the time, or just a garden-variety type lunatic? His postings are incomprehensible and stupid and an insult to this forum.

I will not read them anymore because that crazy person has NOTHING constructive to add to any of the forums he visits and is merely a twittish pipsqueak.

I don't like to criticise but when I read postings from "the moon is a balloon" I wonder if maybe he should be told by the moderators to add CONSTRUCTIVE postings and not the alcohol and drug-fueled ramblings of a cretin.

Kellie#99,you really brought some memories back to me about Edinburgh in the 50s with the Valdor gang, the Pallias dance hall,Tonys, Fairlies etc. drape suits, duck tail haircuts,Tony Curtis haircuts, boy i must be getting old, the american navy, the yanks from Kirknewton air base, i must admit it was good times then, you just learned to keep your mouth shut or it would then be a " square go " or more, ive been over here since 1964, but i must admit that Edinburgh has turned into the Wild West, how very sad, what happened to my birthplace???
