How uncool!
Who would want to be seen dead on this contraption?

Can't wait to see what happens when the 'Elf and Safety' boys get wind of it, and heaven knows what sort of a fun day the Council Licensing dept. will have in assessing what operating licence fee, possible road tax, Insurance etc., and, no doubt, headache charge for regulations to apply (no doubt already being worked on), parking facilities, and charges, special charge for large Passenger carrying vehicle - not forgetting a Council annual charge for inspections of safety and roadworthiness - and another absolutely essential, of course, their decision on hire charges to be applied!

Naturally, in one of their more generous moods they will allow the operator complete freedom of choice of colour of the vehicle - for the time being.

No doubt they will see it as a very rewarding 'Nice little - perhaps big, earner' and, best of all, at virtually no expense to themselves, except for the additional cost of a gang of 'Seven up Spotters', naturally with bicycles - appropriate 'Gang wardens in charge' at an enormous salary and accompanying status - absolutely essential in such adventurous matters.

After all it is their duty to protect he taxpayers, citizens and visitors to the City against ‘Entrepreneurs, people with futuristic ambitions and the like, otherwise the place could be overcome with profiteering -‘and that’s our job!’

Will it be ‘worth pumping up the tyres and oiling the wheels’ for the operator of this obvious great new innovation to transport, or shall we see numerous committee meetings to be ‘arranged’ for all to have their say on the matter - as they sometimes do, or will there be a loud cry from City Chambers of a definite ‘No’ - mainly because they cannot get any members to be named and accepting overall authorizing responsibility, at present - at least not on the current ‘financial carrot’ and perks being dangled’ - if any?

Could be many ‘fun days’ ahead, but possibly - ‘Not a Lot’ as they say!

And what about the we

I'm sorry but its just rubbish.

Vincent W,

Edinburgh 27/08/2007 13:24:19

Victor - Take a minute and visit the HSE site. Each month they have a 'Myth of the Month'. The vast majority of the rubbish spouted in the name of H&S is just headlines for the press or poor quality decisions by non-H&S people.

Don't be suckered by the band wagon.

CONCHA,

Is it possible to get up a kerb with this contraption?

Will it be too big for tye cycle lanes?

Probably.

So what a waste of fecking time. and what a desperate pishy article.

Dwayne Pipes,

Now this is likely to stall the trams.

7

Märiö äntoinette,

The saddest thing about it is that they couldnt get five people to share it with. If this happens again , look in the cramond inn.

#2 Is your surname Meldrew by any chance? I was going to ask you to explain what you are talking about but I'm not sure you really know yourself...
As for the other comments, this is certainly a niche vehicle, but no less fit for purpose than a mountain bike on a city street. Only question is why it is supposedly limited to 5mph when its competitors like the Octos can go much faster.
BTW, it is a HPV Hazel, not a bicycle.

Excellent! I love negative ill informed posters! A stereotypical Edinburgh reaction? We appreciate well researched appropriate criticism but fail to find any here.

If I return to Cramond I invite you all to have go and then give me an informed opinion. I suspect you might actually enjoy yourself. Seriously, send us your emaill addys and I will let you know when I'm next through that way. iain@cosybike.co.uk

The editors picture choice does not do our day at cramond justice. We were there really early to fit in with the photographers schedule. Our oldest riders were in their seventies, our youngest 6. Unfortunately we had to disappoint a lot of really small children as they were too wee to ride safely. But have just invested in some kiddies seats because I can't stand the crying!
Have a look at the website to see all the happy open minded fun loving folk prepared to give it a go.

If you want a free shot you can find me at The Tour of Britain and Pedal for Scotland in Glasgow

I can assure you we gave rides for free all day from 1030 till 5 pm and were full all day. It is not meant to be a serious transport alternative but is designed to make you think and have a lot of fun.

It is road legal, and requires no VED as it has no engine. I wouldn't take it on a main road though as that would be stupid. As for rain we can fit a parasol and look even sillier or we can just go to the pub instead.

At the moment it doesn't look like Edinburgh deserves any fun...Can anyone prove me wrong?

Iain - couple of questions for you. .

(a) what sort of roads is it limited to then? (you say " no main roads")?

(b) how do you transport it? Towable by car???

He's escaped!

druidh, you get back to singletrack where you belong!

Ignore them. There's a regular bunch that comment on almost everything, they like to see their names and negativity is their style. Get a life springs to mind.

Good initiative and great fun ! Keep going !

What's next? How about a circular tour bus, equipped with pedals?

have to say - agree with douglas - any opportunity to criticise seems to be the way of these unadventurous souls - live a little people - sounds like a great idea & great fun.

Cramond Visitor,

Edinburgh 27/08/2007 21:17:46

How can some of you comment so negatively when you haven't even seen or tried this new bike? I was keen to see what would appear in the paper and on this web site today as, unlike you, I have seen this cosybike in action. I just happened to be there on Saturday and so I saw it and after a while I even had a turn on it. I can assure you that it WAS a lot of fun! Everyone (of all ages) who tried it whilst I was there said the same thing. Apart from the exercise it is such a social event. This bike is clearly not meant to be suitable for all road conditions so a lot of your comments are just not sensible. It is not the kind of bike anyone would buy for commuting - it is for fun, events and social use. See it for what it is and if you can have a turn on it - you might even lighten up enough to enjoy the experience.

Sarcasm - My PR is very good thanks. Druidh has been provided personally with extra information and hopefully will have got the joke created specifically for him.
Can you offer any constructive criticism?

I will repeat my (time limited) offer to you all.
send your email addy to iain@cosybike.co.uk and I will let you know when I'm next in Edinburgh and you can have a shot. You never know, you might meet somone special. Especially if you haven't been out for a while. You might even have a creative inspirational idea.
I'm not just doing it for the cash, a bit of social enterprise is involved too. I have a blind chum desperate for a go and have already taken an adult with downs syndrome for a ride who has probably never ridden a bike before. Enabling someone to do that is worth more than the money.

Now, Are you mice or men?

We have them here and folks love them. Especially on the boardwalks in Wildwood.

23

Märiö äntoinette,

I still hate it Ian but.... I'm sure there are people who will spend 600 pounds in order to hire it for 6 hours. though i myself would rather buy 7 second hand bikes which would last a lot longer.

Seriously though, try to get a tie in with some of the backpacker bus tours in scotland , Haggis etc. Its a quirky thing , and quite cheap for them based on 7 for one hour. And the good thing is that they can come to you. Pick a scenic site (aviemore/loch morlich maybe ?) and youll get a different bunch of global idiots everyday.

What more could you ask for a great quirky way of having a laugh with family, friends, etc. This bike has excellent potential to entertain all age groups and abilities.

We should aim to promote ideas that encourage group activities and sporting events especially with the worsening health of our nation, increasing youth crime and not to mention promoting Glasgow for the commonwealth bid. If this brings families, friends, youth groups together this in my opinion can only help all to assist issues that are at the top of the political agenda.

Feel ashamed that so many poor informed individually continue to post such negativity. We should be supporting our small businesses with new ideas like this that promote healthy, green, group spirited, clean fun for all.

Can I say congratulations to Iain. I have been on the cosy bike in Pollok Park in Glasgow and loved it. Not only that I met so many people that evening as the cosy bike is a social amusement, we got a bit of exercise at the same time! my friends kids have been raving about it since they had a go and keep asking for one for christmas. I would say to take Iains challenge of having a go then see if you still want to bump your gums?
It is a great talking point and I would most certainly go on it again.

iain urquhart,

The 6 hour hires are intended for festivals and events where Rides are provided to all usually for free.

Or the extremely rich and fit!

These crabbit folk are just jealous 'cause they missed a go on Cosybike. Life's too short not to have some fun! Good luck Iain - sure you'll have lots riders and loads of fun.
