brilliant Salmond plays it casual on this and everbody else demands it - the man is a genius
#1He cetainly is unique. ANDREW.
Nice to see the Tories continuing their centuries-old tradition of opposing better working conditions.
Next week: Murdo Fraser calls for the repeal of the Factories Acts - "This unnecessary red-tape is affecting our chimney cleaners' competitiveness, and stopping our 9-year-old from progressing in the real world."
Nice to see one of the New Labour numpties being typically hypocritical; going on about anyone going back on their promises as quickly as they can. Apart from anything else, it immediately makes you think of bonfires and Quangos.
from the article,
A Labour spokesman said yesterday: "The SNP ... are going back on their promises as quickly as they can. This is just another example of something they said they would do, but they're backpedalling now they're in power."
Thus proving yet again that a policy starved labour party will jump at even the slightest nudge to maintain their negitive status.
Perhaps they are aspiring for the SNP to do less better.
On the plus side, it's nice to know they will be pushing, and voting for this part of SNP policy.
Who in their right mind would want a holiday on Nov30th. Pouring rain, snowing or blowing a gale. Switch it to some Monday in July so that we can have an extended summer holiday with the kids etc.

oh yes..def spot on
#13 brilliant critique for this time in the morning on a Saturday. Now go and have a cup of tea..
#13, Oh I see what you did there, you took my pretend name, messed about with the spelling, added a letter, took out another and turned it into a colloquialism for a penis. Oh very good, go you. I'll remember not to tangle with such a creative colossus in future.
So nice to see The Scotsman finally using the First Minister title given to the head of the Scottish Government in their sub head. Is this the first time they've used it in a hundred days? Perhaps Ray didn't get the memo saying FM Salmond must always be referred to as SALMOND...
But a spokeswoman for the Executive said last night that Mr Salmond had personally contacted Mr Canavan to reassure him that the national holiday plan was still in place.
She said: "We are building on the holiday provisions in Dennis Canavan's bill to make the most of Scotland's national day and create a winter festival from St Andrew's Day through Hogmanay to Burns Night."
She added: "This year is an interim arrangement because holiday plans were already set, and of course, as a responsible employer, we must negotiate these matters with trade unions for next year and beyond.
"This government has very ambitious plans to encourage the people of Scotland to celebrate St Andrew's Day and what it means to be Scottish, and we believe that having a holiday will support this approach."

And in four paragraphs lies the crux of this non-story created by an ineffective opposition because they are incapable of creating a real stushie!!!
It's only Day 101. Did you all expect Alex to do EVERYTHING by now??
Bloody New Labour hypocrites! They had ample time to do it and didn't!!
And the Tories needn't start ... they had 18 years to bring a new holiday in and didn't do it either!!
#15 Norbert Great response, It made me Laugh. Thanks!I suspect that it soared over the head of howyoudoingboy.
#17 says it all what about the lib/dums what do they have to say
#15 :-)
Next Wendy's numpties will be complaining Salmond hasn't fed the 5,000,there's no wine in them thar water jars and he hasn't even TRIED walking across the Forth instead of using the corroded road bridge. Which,by the way, should have been replaced in the last hundred days. Shocking!
First Minister is not good enough it should be The Scottish Prime Minister no quetion.
It seems it was Sturgeons idea to drop the extra public holiday, but was willing to let it go ahead if pie shops and make-up wholesalers were excluded.
Did I mention the rumour (no doubt shortly to become confirmed fact) that the utility diversion costs for the Tram are likely to double.
Dear (and Dear God, it's starting to look DEAR) Liberal Tramocrats, Labur, Green Wooly Jumpers and Tories who should have known better:
That's what you get for forcing a start on a half baked scheme just to get it on site before an election, and what you get for forcing it through in Parliament to prove how "tough" you are.
0/10 Must do better
And you may say: whit ida neem o da peerie wife does da Tram hae ta do wi holidays.
Edinburgh folk will hae ta wirk extra shifts on der holidays ta pey fur da Tram Owrespend.

#26 HYDB, that's just a selection of random words in no sensible order, do try harder...or maybe it's a Haiku.
Try assembling the following into something coherent: 'Arse my hairy fat kiss spunkmonkey'.

knobert is....
There you go..he..he
Non story-yawn.
This government has very ambitious plans to encourage the people of Scotland to celebrate St Andrew's Day and what it means to be Scottish, and we believe that having a holiday will support this approach
Wow! The SNP want to set a day aside for the people of Scotland to celebrate and know what it means to be Scottish. The people already know what it means to be Scottish and celebrate the fact every day of their life's.
#21 cadgersYou forgot to mention world peace, finding the holy grail, discovering an alternative energy source, contolling the weather......................
#30 its the Executive not Govt. They're still based doon in London.
#31 So I did! "He been a very naughty boy." :-)
31 you write:
Mmm, your team have been binned, you have been in charge for the last fifty years.
Goodbye, don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out!
I'm sure Wendy the Wonderwoman will set him straight, particularly on controlling the weather. She need only open her mouth.....................
#34I fear you misunderstood
You cannae trust these nats . . .
;)
# 28
I know I am but what are you?
#22Maybe we should just call him Taoiseach like his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern. But St. Andrew's Day should be a national holiday, whatever the weather.
#30 Cant say every Scotsman does celebrate the fact there Scottish i serve with a lot of Scots who have little or no pride in the fact there Scottish due to growing up in a S**t scheme in poverty.Me on the other hand grew up in a S**t scheme in almost poverty however i love Scotland and i think the S.N.P. are showing at the moment they are the right party to take us forward as they are all for Scotland 1st and foremost.I serve in the British army with pride but im SCOTTISH first and Scotland means the world to me if a simple holiday can help people be proud of there roots then whats the problem, lets all be proud of by far the best country in the world.SCOTLAND!
New Labour takes S.N.P. to task for the pettiest of reasons, making out they are governing badly which is anything but the case. Receiving huge sums of money for peerages is fraudulent it is no doubt graft and corruption punishable by a jail sentence, all of after a lengthy and costly investigation, the police investigation, should be investigated and the guilty jailed. After all apart from the public knowing from day one that Blair and Co would not be found guilty No matter what, the public knows for sure, that fraud was committed by the Labour government and it was covered up Haven't they got one brass neck ,for trying to make the St Andrews day issue something bigger than their fraud. You'd think they eating humble pie. what brass necks they have.
"FM accused of going back on St Andrew's holiday vow" - Is that your best shot!
How about we all book off "sick" on St. Andrew's Day? It's a Friday, so we can ahave a long weekend!
I'm confused: How can someone go back on a promise/ brake a promise when thay haven't even talked about it yet, it's ovbouse they just haven't got round to talking about that yet.
It's just 1 day (yes it should be made more important, BUT there is other things and days which are also important too, some may not even of happen yet), it's not like it could be put through tomorrow and we'd all get a holiday this 30th November. (or at least I've been led to belive that things take a wee while to go through.
Oddly this artcle only refers to the first 100days there nothing to say that it won't be mentioned at all.Very odd that!!!
