How about a nice statue of Harry Potter? Much better than 'Rowling Avenue' full of crappy new houses costing an arm and a leg to buy with no character and unlikely to last longer than 50 years.

1, Obvious but the best idea. Stick it somewhere that needs a bit more exposure , Festival square in Lothian Road or the square behind it (outside EICC and Standard Life).

Agreed, but only if in the process we rename the hopeless and embarassing "Sir Harry Lauder Road".

4

#1 & #2 Do you think Harry's specs (or wand) would last longer than those on Donald Dewar's statue in Glesga?

The council could spend a few quid on the children's book library on George IV Bridge, and then rename it.

Lord Provost George Grubb said: "JK Rowling has made a fantastic contribution to literature and Edinburgh has benefited greatly from her prominence on the world stage.

How exactly has Edinburgh benefited from her prominence George?

Good idea, make a statue out of granite.
That would make it a rowling stone.

Personally I'd like JK Place, that would go down well with the residents.

HOw about a massive pub called Jakeys Place. Edinburgh needs more massive pubs.

Since she has gotten more kids to read, around the world, than anyone else in Scottish history, it should be a Library/Reading Resource centre. A place that helps make more books availble to kids, and a place that encourages them to write stories themselves. That seems like the best thing to me. It is a living and functioning part of the community. Statues are static, and who knows who will remember in 100 or 200 years. What actual good does a statue do?

10. Pigeons love them , and they are good for taking up space in a photo.

As usual...Everyone forgets JK is English and happened to write Harry Potter in Edinburgh...
Its got sod all to do with Scotland.. The setting for Hogwarts is Alnwick Castle, which last time I looked was in England.
I say again Scotland had nothing to do with it, if anything it’s a British success storey you inward looking jingoist nationalists.
Ranking wrote Rebus in the South of France, does that make him French? Should their be a monument to him in France?

Boy Wonder,

#12. Exiling Rankin to a poor quarter in France would suit me just fine! :)

As for JK Rowling, I think a sponsorship programme to encourage new writing from young talent is the way forward.

If a place has to be named then make it the local library where she lives, e.g; The JK Rowling Library ... or a section of somewhere like the Assembly Rooms, e.g; The JK Rowling Wing.

Street names of Edinburgh and it's constituent parts should reflect local history and legend/myth rather than individuals.

Billions of pounds in book sales is reward enough. This smells like another "City of Literature"-type PR job that won't do a thing to help those of us authors in the city who are trying to get established. (You could probably count without any fingers the number of local publishers accepting unsolicited manuscripts.) The same goes for Mr Rankin, who really doesn't need the help or daily exposure in this paper; he's doing fine. More power to both these authors, but enough with exploiting them to death to the exlusion of all else.

And the solution wouldn't be yet another $#@ing brand-name literary contest (art is not a competition!) or a hunk of prominently-displayed metal on a podium.

How about making sure the local presses aren't so cash-strapped, so they can invest in new titles instead of having to keep churning out joke Weegie hillwalking whisky tartan books?

#12 Do some research. The Hogwarts Express railway is filmed in Glenfinnan, Hagrids hut is Glen Nevis and Glen Coe and a lot of other scenes (including a lot of Hogwarts) is filmed in Scotland!

And who cares what nationality the woman is - she wrote Harry Potter in Edinburgh. People come to Edinburgh to see the cafe's where she wrote the book, people stalk the woman, the EN would be half the size it is without her (and Ian Rankin). So like it or not JK Rowling has been a huge boost for the economy of Scotland and Edinburgh.

Time to stop being jealous and do something more notable for the nation, then you can moan about other succesful people.

aleex , her nationality would be no different if she hadve been born here....

I say put up a wee statue of Hairy Potter and be done with it. If it attracts more tourists , great.

we could then put up a sign... "Jakie Rolling"...

#12 - The fact that JK Rowling has chosen Scotland as a fitting place to raise her children and a suitable place to write all her books and as a setting for Hogwarts and as a fine place to meet a husband suggests she has no problem with Scotland. Why should you?

It has a great deal to do with Scotland. the Glenfinnan viaduct the train passes over is in Scotland. Some scenes were filmed at Alnwick, a lot more were filmed in Glen Coe. Which is also in Scotland, at least it was last time i saw it.

Ian Rankin wrote some of Rebus in France, not all of them, unlike Rowling who wrote all hers in Scotland, including finishing the very last chapter in one of Edinburgh's Five Star hotels.

Good attempt at making a point, but no points to Guruindor!

What nothing for me, I'll be in touch with my local paper about this
