Let's have the truth,

"energy-hungry China and India are jockeying for a share in the country's vast resources of oil and gas. In return, both are happy to meet the junta's demand for weapons".

.......Sounds like a repeat of US history.

Scotland will never take its proud rightful place on the world 'axis of evil' stage if Salmond stops developing nucelar technology! Stop him now!

Can't think why Bush hasn't liberated them and brought them democracy, what with their strategic position and all that lovely oil and gas.

#9 Conan. Definitely more like American history. You know the routine, prop up dictatorships, supply them with arms and ammunition, ignore human rights abuses etc. etc. The yanks have been doing that for decades.

The Non-Proliferation Treaty upholds the right of any nation to have a nuclear programme for producing power which it seems is all this is. Alex salmond may prefer that we have blackouts & windmillery but the Burmese are perfectly entitled to feel that they have had to many blackouts & go for something better.

Burma is merely a member of the Axis of Pretty Useless.

Guess it is waste of time demanding for the release of Daw Aung San Su Kyi, as we know talking is cheap, practical is the best way to have the job done, the dictators have their big brothers with them, China and Russia and possibly North Korea, China said it is their internal affair why did China veto the UN Security Resolution when it called upon the release of Daw Aung San Su Kyi they should stay as an absentees......

America can only liberate so many nations at a time. I have an idea we could have the Scottish Armed forces help, but first you would have to ask the Queens Permission then talk about it for a few hundred years after all you are such a world power. Another idea would be to defeat them with liberalism. Liberals will not allow the growth of nuclear power to rid of us oil dependency but it is ok for other countries to develop it. Bush should send the liberals to the nuclear power hungry countries to protest the building of the plants with sit-ins that would stop them.

If the UK went into Burma the USA could do what it did in WWII, sit on it's arse and wait to see which way the wind blows.

I find it frankly offensive that so many Scots and others reading the newspaper would slam the United States on this day. Today, the US celebrates Memorial Day in the United States (a day to remember those who have died in wars). If memory serves me correctly, Americans came to the assistance of Britain through convoys, supplies, men, and blood. For those who see the US as their enemy, take a break and think twice before you click the the enter button with your insults. Before you know it, you may lose one more of your few friends with such offensive commentaries.

I have lived in Burma and know firsthand that the Myanmar military cares very little for its fellow citizens. Each of the top military thugs, as well as their children, own castles for homes but look on nonchalantly as civil servants and private sector employees live on less than 25 Euros per month. Such profit comes from its rich oil and gas deposits. They have made many agreements with China, India, and Russia. These agreements will not help UK influence. You should be more concerned for the Burmese. Scotland, being part of the United Kingdom, should remember that Burma was one other of the prized colonies and profitted from the land and the people in a former generation. Many Scots settled in Burma before 1945. Maybe more Scottish activism might help in the speedy release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the demise of of Than Shwe and his military dictatorship.
