Perhaps it just goes to show how desperate some people are; there have been plenty of cases of attempted or successful deportations which were found by the courts to have been illegal; also many cases of asylum-seekers being assaulted while in detention by guards who are confident that their victims will have no comeback on them.

This is the first time I have been proud to say I live in Canada. What backward thinking and viscious comments....Scots have been welcomed all over the World. Them, they, send them..You are talking about people trying to improve their families lives..gie a man a chance. Canada does. Things seem to be alright here.

13. 3rd time lucky, Squamish Canada

we have immigration rules in this country (sort off) and these people are not immigrants ,asylum has become nothing more than a substitute for the proper immigration procedures, this country does not have the ability to take on every asylum seeker
who fancy`s comming here. Canada 72 times the size of the UK hardly any population! woud be in a better position to help these poor souls do you advocate to the goverment in Ottawa to open ther borders and take all?

Freddie Q,

Kingston upon Thames 13/05/2007 09:42:33

Until I read this article, I thought that failed asylum seekers were routinely held in secure deportation centres, until HM Prison Service had collected enough of them to justify the cost of chartering a secure flight, which I figured were more likely to fly from RAF bases than commercial airports like Heathrow.

I thought that the idea that deportees were individually put on scheduled passenger flights was a myth - partly because I've never actually *seen* anyone kicking off in the departure lounge. It stands to reason - no-one's going to be happy to be deported, so you need to be prepared for their behaviour, and their attempts to escape.

So - was I wrong then? If so, then what's the point of secure deportation facilities? I don't see why the taxpayer should pay for facilities that aren't actually being used.

15

3rd time lucky,

Squamish Canada 13/05/2007 09:51:52

I guess that Canada is in a different position to most European countries because of its location, making it harder and more expensive to relocate to. My main point was that the generalisation of people trying to better themselves was harsh..chains ect...not very Scottish. Or is it?

I hang my head in shame at my fellow country men and women expressing such seniments.
If you were being sent back to suffer torture ,imprisonment or death you would resist.

The only voice of sanity in here appears to be that of #12 jimquk.

How many of you have acctauly met an "asylum seeker" ? looks like your opinions are be formed by the tabliod press, and comments like use tazers, straight jackets ect "ad nausem" betray a lack of original thinking making you sound like bleating sheep.
I hope that you never find yourself in the situation that you are fired from your job because of your political believes ( mind you the majority of you would have been kicked out of the Gestapo for creulty) or find that due to civil war of famine you have to flee your home.

21

barbara 3,

Glasgow 13/05/2007 11:37:29

3rd time lucky# Well said.
Freddie Q# It all depends on Reid Targets and how desperate they are to get the detention figures down. If they can get the media to publicise what they say these flights cost they will then get the support of all these people who believe everything they read. Public flights are used but are often stopped not because of the behaviour of "unruly asylum seekers" but because of support from people who are against "death flights".

£75,000 to drop off a single person! That was probably to get peoples backs up and to gain labour support. I notice that the bonuses etc that are paid to security companies for "removals" are not mentioned !

The problem here is not asylum seekers it is the Government, they have messed up everything that once made the UK proud. The NHS, Pension Schemes, Railways, Education to name a few.

I hang my head in shame at the tone of the comments expreesd here by my fellow Scots.
The only posting that shows an ounce of compassion or understanding is that of # 12 jimquk.

You obviously have not met an "ayslum seeker" I am sure that if you were fired from your job for your beleives (most of you would have been kicked out of the Gestapo for cruelty) or had to flee your home because of civil war or ethnic cleansing and found that you were to be returned you would fight tooth and nail to prevent this.
When will you find out the facts for yourseleves in stead of getting your opinions from the gutter press.
Then launching into sadistic fantasies about tazers, chains manacles and straight jackets.

24

Anthony,

Glasgow 13/05/2007 13:08:12

(23) Chuck, you're caught in a bit of circular logic if I may suggest. The whole reason they are being sent back, is because it has been decided that they are not genuine asylum seekers, and therefore they are very probably not having to escape all the things you mention. Let's not forget that according to the immigration officers own professional association, only one in nine at most, who seek asylum in the UK have any basis whatsoever to their claim. Yet around four times that number get to stay, being granted refugee status, which places them on full benefits. That points towards a still pretty lenient system, which if it is in any doubt, gives the claimant the benefit of that doubt. Those being deported therefore, very likely deserve to be.

Yes 3rd time lucky, I agree that many of the comments posted are well over the top. Although when Scots & other Europeans were originally sent or migrated to places like Australia, New Zealand & North America, they lived or died by their own efforts. There were no hand-outs from the welfare state like there are now.

I think the uk must advertise in the holiday brochures.
Free Board and Lodgings + spending money to all who don't mind making there own way to this temperate paradise.
Your contribution to the destabilizing of this small island will be rewarded by the incompetents who govern it, who see such actions as proof that they are not doing enough for you.
They will also give you free legal aid to assist in your suing them in the event they are tardy in dealing with your demands

#17 Truth Finder

We already do that in Canada and at great expense to the Canadian taxpayer.

You would not believe the scale of health fraud, housing fraud, credit card fraud (mainly from countries in Eastern Europe and Russia and the Horn of Africa).

I know these things because I sit on a board of directors that scrutinises the backgrounds of persons seeking affordable housing and we have even had to call in the RCMP AND CSIS to deal with flagrant violations of sovereign Canadian law.

White Glaswegian,

Police manuals inform that fingerprints of accused persons will be taken by ‘‘whatever means necessary’’.
The same rules should be applied to failed asylum seekers and illegal immigrants. If necessary, they should be sedated and/or placed in cages. Second method might not be sufficient - their deliberate screams may frighten to other passengers. Remove all public funding from the numerous ‘‘refugee welcoming charities and groups’’, these groups harass our Home Office and Immigration Officials (with our money) Also, it’s time our political reps were speaking out and supporting our immigration officers in carrying out their extremely hard task of deporting legally failed asylum seekers and illegal immigrants. In passing, did you notice in the run up to the election, the various parties dropped the subject of asylum and immigration from their manifesto. They knew it was a vote loser. The massive asylum and immigration con must not be allowed to continue.

32

David Ex-Pat,

13/05/2007 20:41:15

Ridiculous! Stick them on RAF bog-standard planes with armed soldiers, if they act like asses then use necessary force to contain them, but get them off of our soil. Rowday requires a response. Other then that charter small aircraft and handcuff them to a Police officer armed with a Tazer.

33

Angus Lindsay,

The system has been abused for so long it's almost considered normal. Many thanks to various publicly-funded (misguided) focus groups as #32 points out. Their nicely paid little jobs depend on illegals and the like, so they're unlikely to rock the boat.

Talking of boats ... A container ship holds more than an aircraft, so I don't see what the problem is. America routinely deports huge numbers of Mexicans who illegally cross its border.

34

Justiceseeker,

Manchester 14/05/2007 08:33:28

My guess is that virtually none of you guys have ever met an asylum seeker. I would like to invite you to come and meet some of my friends who have been tortured and imprisoned for standing up for truth or simply daring to disagree with the tyrant ruling their country. They have all been refused asylum here by a system that disregards human rights, assumes guilt rather than innocence and treats human beings worse than dogs.
If you listen to their stories, then look them in the eye and tell them they should go home, fine. But if you have an ounce of compassion in you, you are very unlikely to do that. Rather you will be ashamed to live in a country that pretends to be fair and just.
I knew nothing about asylum until I met an asylum seeker 8 years ago. They are not all angels by any means, but compared to the average Brit, they work harder, are more educated, and generally have a lot to offer this country. Personally I feel priveleged to work with them.

35

Eric D,

Scottish taxpayer 14/05/2007 10:26:31

The stakeholder has no input to these immigration issues. As a taxpayer I am disgusted at having to foot the bill for them. I would like to see the UK Gov implement the Australian model where all asylum seekers are housed apart from the general population and social security payments are denied for the first 2 years. All cases heard within 3 months , and the onus put on the asylum seeker to prove they are refugees. All failed refugees should be summarilly deported and any appeals made outside UK.

If they are geniune refugees they should be vetted about suitability eg acceptance of the British traditions and the respect and upholding of the law. They should be forced to take a five year citizen program and probationary period and anyone convicted a criminal offence deported.

*35 Justiceseeker, Manchester

firstly, your guess is wrong!

the entire white population of Zimbabwe , mostly
British, born or their parents live in fear of the Hitler
of Africa there is between 100,000 and 150,000 of these people who can tell you some fearful story`s
and the British govement does want to give them protection either, I use the word protection because they are British not asylum seekers so if you think only asylum seekers dont get a fair deal what about or own?

38

White Glaswegian,

Glasgow 14/05/2007 16:46:57

After these disruptive failed asylum seekers have been taken from the ‘plane and brought back onto ‘‘land’’, what happens to them. Are they released to wander about and take up from where they left off i.e., continue falsely claiming their full benefits package. Does anyone know?

39

Dox,

Catapult them back.

40

Rev_RJD,

I am pretty disgusted at the level of "debate" in connection with this article. I'd say it makes me ashamed to be Scottish - but then I am tolerant of people even if they talk uninformed trash. Listen to what you folks are (mostly) saying. OK, so someone is a failed asylum seeker, they have no legal right to be here. Fine. The law says they should go home - I do not have a dispute with the law of the land. But for God's sake - have some human decency, some compassion. Some of the comments posted are outrageous - perhaps just a bunch of smart alecs with nothing better to say? I hope so - cos if these opinions were to reflect what the majority of decent Scots thought then I'd want to leave this country. Do you guys not learn from history - when does treating others with disrespect and inhumanity help any situation?
I am not a tree hugger or part of a wooly jumper brigade - but a bit of decency to our fellow human beings would not go amiss. Yes, if the law says they need to go back then so be it - but every person no matter race, colour or creed should have the right (DOES HAVE THE RIGHT) under international law to seek asylum in any country and to be treated with respect and dignity if that claim is met or if it is rejected
