The loony left in Scotland have traditionally been soft on crime anyway and they are more interested in imposing a ban on fox hunting than cracking down on thugs, drug dealers, etc. Why should the Left change their ways for race/religous related crime?

Around 5 years ago one Scottish couple killed their own children and walked free from court after the judge said it would be an 'injustice' to jail them. On the other hand, some poor guy in Fife gets taken to court for killing bats in his attic.

The lets-put-up-a-poster approach to crime and/or racism is just typical of our politicians who seem to live in la-la land.

(Osama Saeed needs to explain why so many members of the MAB support muslim militant organisations. There has been plenty of articles on this in English newspapers and Osama has chosen to keep quiet about this.)

I would completely agree with 'rulebutnotrulers'. The victims are equally guilty if they try to fiercely preserve their alien identity in their country of current residence. If one is determined to stay away from the mainstream, then one must face the consequent isolation and indifference.

Anyone who does not fit the stereotype image believed by those from the shallow end of the gene pool are potential victims. You do not have to wear a veil to be targeted, just have an educated accent or worse an English accent then look out. Bullies are almost encouraged from an early age by lack of awareness from teachers who if they were up to their job would spot the thugs and also the vulnerable. It is discouraging to read that racism is rampant in Scotland but are we surprised? There is a world-wide epidemic of race-related crimes and much of it derives from ignorance, intolerance, and misinformation.

A front page article in a local paper entitled "The Muslim Mary" elucidated a fact I have known for ages - The Virgin Mary is mentioned more times in The Holy Koran than in The Holy Bible and Jesus and Joseph are also mentioned many times.

When I tell this to some friends of mine who have not studied comparative religions or The Koran they call me a liar and a traitor against Christianity. It is HISTORICAL FACT and no amount of pious outrage is going to change the written record - in this case The Koran.

Perhaps this is where much of "Islamophobia" comes from - ignorance of historical antecedents and a lack of knowledge of what EXACTLY is written in The Koran.

There is a difference between being a Muslim and an Islamist - the former is a devout and peaceful follower of The Koran while the latter perverts what is contained in The Koran for terroristic and self-serving ends.

A parallel would be Bible-thumping, born-again Evangelical Christians in the southern states of the US of A on television here daily and some of their misguided and down-right dangerous "interpretations" of what is contained in the Bible are ludicrous and inflammatory.

There are many crimes recorded as racist because (defined by the police) the victims perceives it to be racist - a robbery in a grocers shop is precisely that until a shopkeeper "believes it to be racist" then it takes on a totally different dimension. But if a police officer is abused by an arrested person who happens to be of another ethnic origin and the officer is called a white b...... or a h...y, they seem not to be racially aggravated offences (because it wouldn't be in the interests to record them etc. etc.)
The whole of white male youth community in Pilrig/Leith was under suspicion for this lie by the the Sikh laddie and the lie in itself is therefore racist. Any record of it? I suspect not.
For far too long the race issue - not to be confused with religion - has been the excuse for many an allegation and the likes of Shami Khan and this laddie can be ashamed of themselves for devaluing what is a serious, distressing and cancerous matter within Scotland which should be addressed with more than posters and hollow promises.

The Scottish culture has always contained a strong element of debate and challenge. That is the main reason that Scotland has "punched above its weight" in philosophy, science and economics. The brilliance of Robert Burns's poetry comes partly from his questioning of the conventions and hypocrisies of his times.

If this innate Scottish characteristic of debate and challenge is not channelled within a code of reasonable civilized behaviour, we get violence, street gangs and sectarianism. The breakdown of our educational system has unhappily coincided with the arrival of large numbers of visible minorities. I can't understand when so many people agree on these matters of immigration and crime and nothing is done about it!

No matter which Politician or Party is put in power, they feel it's their duty to become "do gooders" and to pot with the wishes of the people who put them there.

I have said this many times, attempts to legislate against discrimination breeds that discrimination because those who do not, feel dis-enfranchised and stigmatised. Many fears are indeed media created in the sense that media report things, however Government create the agenda. Lets take Smoking Bans. The media report that Passive Smoking kills, but where do they get that from.? Answer from Governments and health fanatics who want to stop smoking. Is it true.? I watched a programme on David Icke last night, and like most 15 odd years ago I thought he was a nutter. Having listened to what he wrote in his books going back 15 years now I am not so sure. If we accept the truth without question we leave ourselves open to Government Control. Never in the history of Britain has a Government embarked on so much legislation to curtail Human Rights and publically pretend they are the defenders of our rights.

#17 Ken, thanks ... in my view the politicians do nothing about it on the basis that it is not in the interests of the party they represent - to do anything about it.

My recommendation is to vote independent, look for sensible, non-affiliated people within your local jurisdiction and empower them to remove the blight of the party political system from our landscape ... maybe when we have enough independent MP's we can rectify the damage that political parties have done to the underlying system of Government that we currently have ... it might also provide our communities with proportional and actual representation within Government in a way that we have been crying out for - for way too long.

Mrs Thatcher is credited with crushing the Unions and decimating the British coal industry ... maybe we can credit New Labour with crushing the political parties who control our interests to serve their own ... by moving our votes en-masse to local, public serving, independent MPs.

These statistics if broken down in to percentage of population shows that racism is far more endemic in the ethnic population than in the white population.

Bill C... any mention of a racist word/attack that is made during the commission of any crime makes that crime also a hate crime. A very high proportion of racist crimes are actually directed towards Police Officers. They are routinely called a Black B*****d or English/Welsh/Irish B******d. The officer then adds this to his/her report to the Fiscal along with the original offence.

I would wager that those issuing the racist abuse are the youngsters we see all too frequently hanging around aimlessly on street corners or in shopping malls menacing anyone who is unlucky enough to pass by.

In all my time in the UK and 18 years abroad, I have never actually met a white, north European (other than two really stupid, school kids I attended school with in Scotland - not in the Borders though) who claimed to hate people simply because of their ethnic background ... I have however met a few Chinese and Pakistani and Lebanese males who would never consider integrating outwith their own communities other than for employment - they were quiet agitated about the suggestion made tongue in cheek at different times over lunch too - I tend to think a lot of the apparent resentment is more about anger at inconsistent government and media policies and coverage of issues that go to the heart of the community and have these issues flagged as institutional racism from the white majority of our community - I blame the ultra liberal public servants who are unelected and push through the biggest load of nonsense to justify their existence for doing not a lot of anything ... minimal Government will sort this out and make them get a real job.

All kinds of abuse have to be stopped. Period. And let's straighten out our vocabulary: Racist? Do Muslims e.g. belong to a special race? 'Race' is a biological, not a religious term. It is the ignorant or uneducated respectively who have been misled Orwell-style in the post-9/11 days. Why, do you think words are given new meanings by the 'politically correct'? And this is not always funny as in the case of the famous American 'co-educational bathroom', meaning a loo for males and females.

When the figures are distilled down, the majority of 'racist incidents' will be verbal abuse or name-calling, oh, and the occassional self-inflicted hair cutting incident. Statitistics, as if it needs clarifed, are inevitably meaningles unless intelligently interpreted. The SE should be classifying the figures according to the severity of the crime so that the problem can be viewed dispassionately. A balanced presentatiion is required or the reports of racist incidents will fail to hit home. Plus, the ordinary citizen will be forgiven for thinking that the SE is being tendentious, which is the same as being economical with the truth. Also, with remote reporting of such matters, many incidents will just be the figment of someone's imagination. Remote reporting of incidents might be useful for gauging the scope of a problem but should not be used to represent official figures. Every report of a racist incident or a crime should be reported to a police officer so that some test of credibility can be applied rather than automatically assuming something has happened.

Racial abuse /harrassment is on the increase in Scotland , being the wife of a middle eastern man for the last 33 years i have witnessed racial abuse increase 10 fold to our family especially my husband !
Being a long standing business man and a pillar of the community employing many scottish people seems to count for nothing, he has suffered scores of incidents , like spat at in the street , bricks thrown at him while driving home , our children a target at school and out shopping , paint stripper on his vans , vandilisation to the point that all his vans have been written off , like chrismas day 2 days ago 2 vans written off thus ensuring he could not deliver his goods to Edinburgh and Glasgow shops , which in turn will affect production and staff cannot work thus less wages ! The police cannot do anything although they know it's racial as there is no witnesses , even though all the incidents which are many are recorded !

I sometimes wonder if false complaints about racially motivated crimes are made in order to generate misleading statistics and subsequently prompt knee jerk action from the machine.

My view is that Muslims are extremely effective at using our hand wringing PC legislation to further their own ends.

I am convinced our good nature and tolerant ways will backfire on us big time. We sit back and concede and concede and concede and legislate in favour of minorities at our expense.

Everyone wishing to live in this country should sign a contract promising to uphold the laws of the land and live in accordance with the views of the majority. If anyone is not prepared to accept this, thats fine - they can go elsewhere.

The Scottish Executive seems to be happy to throw money at so called correct projects but don’t seem to think through how their well intentions will work in practice. It is right that all people should be able to live in communities without fear of abuse whether that be on the grounds of race, religion or for many victims, no apparent reason. However, to simply spend money on advertising and big brother advice on how to treat others does not work.

The Executive should stop throwing money at pet projects and direct our money (the tax payers of Scotland) at front line services such as education. We can influence the thinking of the youth through our schools but cash strapped schools find it difficult to do anything but the main stream curriculum.

We need less focus on pet projects and more money directed to our schools and education and then we will see long term benefits in all our communities. In the short term, we also need more resources targeted at our police services to deal with the minority who attempt to make life hell for people of any race or background in communities.

Have to say I'm sick to death of hearing how bad or racists the Scots are, admittedly we in Scotland have a lot to learn about other cultures; equally other cultures have a whole lot to learn about Scotland and the Scots.

It seems to me in my own simple way that left alone people find middle ground, whereas forcing folk to get along simply because they are foreign to each other is nonsense, it’s more about learning than force feeding.

As a rightful denizen of Scotland every individual has the right to choose who they like or dislike and who they eat and drink with be them foreign or otherwise, likewise our welcomed foreign brothers and sisters have the same options.

It really is time that our heid numpty, wee Joke Mc Connell, and our numpty government stopped their mantra of one nation, many cultures. Multiculturalism cannot, and will not work, regardless of how much taxpayers money they care to throw at it.

If they really want to stop any racism or, at least, minimise it, then they should be encouraging integration by foreigners, not multiculturalism. If people from Scotland go to live abroad, they have to integrate with the local culture, not live totally seperate lives. Other countries will not change their laws, languages or cultures to suit us; we have to adapt to suit theirs.

That said, there does seem to be a lot of confusion by the numpties about what is called racism, and what is religious discrimination, in this case the so-called Islamophobia. Many Muslims, regardless of their race or colour, have brought the latter discrimination upon themselves with their calls for jihads, beheadings and the like. Yet the numpties have been slow, if not totally reluctant, to take any action against such incitement to murder.

Nor do the numpties help the situation with this "racially aggravated crime" stuff. Who, exactly decides whether a crime has any racial element? It appears, to many, that the category is decided purely on the basis that the victim(s) are of a different colour, or, more recently, a different religion. This is going to start to get out of hand and result in even more resentment.

As to the dangers of allowing Muslims to have their own Sharia courts in this country, if that was ever allowed, there would be a lot of resentment generated; if nothing else but for allowing foreigners to rule themselves in our country.

In Michigan, non-English speaking people testing for a driver's license don't have to speak or read English(What kind of dribble is that). Some years ago I saw the first Jaws film in the Cinema in Medicine Hat in Alberta, during my travels on the West coast of the continent. What shocked me as I went in was that the right hand side of the Cinema was empty apart from the front few rows, which were filled with native Indians of the Blackfoot tribe I believe. On the left hand side there was not a seat to be had, as it was full of white folks. I am told by friends in the area that it is much the same today.

Great strides have been taken by some states to acknowledge native Americans, but there is a long long way to go. So no lectures please on racism from you lot.

A lot of the reported race crime in this country is made up, or due to provocation. For instance if I as a white person were to go to my local police and make a complaint against a Pakistani person, I would be shown the door. I think that foreigners somtimes themselves are responsible for triggering off some of this discrimination. When I worked there was one Indian Lady who, every time ther was promotions in the office , would complain that she was discriminated against. There would be around 60 workers of the same grade on the floor, There would be around 3 promotions, and she would be the only one who complained about her lack of promotion. She moaned soo often that we were all fed up listening to her. The figures have to be taken with a pinch of salt - the police officer himself says that the increase may be due to an increasing willingness to report such incidents. Likewise, there's probably a greater willingness on behalf of the police to record or categorise such incidents as racist - that the quoted officer is in charge of 'diversity issues' perhaps tells us something.

Thus there may be on real increase at all, but of course this hardly means that such attacks are acceptable.

However, with the politically correct succeeding in elevating the rights of immigrants and ethnic minority groups etc above the indigenous population then it's hardly surprising that there's a backlash and that the likes of the BNP are on the march - many politically correct measures are sought by two-bit cooncillors and the like as opposed to those who are percieved to be discriminated against, and it's thus the former rather than the latter who are perhaps exacerbating racial conflict.

Likewise, the rise in Islamofacism was always likely to provoke a reaction, but on the other hand it's wrong to categorise all Muslims in this way (as some in this thread seem to be doing), just as it would be wrong to categorise all Protestants with the UDA or whatever.

Coming back to the police, as with many other public bodies there's an obvious over-sensitivity to race issues, which may be driving this sort of article. A fairly minor incident was reported in the Dundee press recently. A long-serving officer was denied promotion after an email he sent to colleauges was leaked to the press. In it the officer said that he was being posted to another part of the city and that it would be like going to Beirut and that he would have to undergo diversity awareness training. (Since the area in question is apparently fairly peaceful the mention of Beirut seemed to allude to the area's ethnic makeup rather than the usual implication of a rather anarchic state of affairs)

They are the immediately neighboring tribes, psychologically speaking, so you feel a constant tension about them, and frequently refer to them as the root of all evil. This is all uncannily similar to the tales my grandmother told me of her experiences as an Italian immigrant to Scotland in the 1920s. When Italy came into the war there was a lot of stuff that today would be called 'racist' that my family had to put up with, including one cousin being murdered in the street in Motherwell.

I feel we are allowing far too many immigrants into the country at a time when we have no idea how many millions have come in the past few years alone. Our social services are not limitless and already many councils are admitting they will have to raise our council tax bills to pay for more immigrants. The tax and NI paid by the legal and illegal immigrants do not come close to the strain they put on the NHS for example.

Housing - already it is nigh impossible for young folk to get on the housing ladder - the more people we add into the system the more strain it puts on the housing market and rents.

No doubt their will be the usual folk who will attack this post as racist but I believe the majority of voters in the UK are sick of being the open door of Europe and not having any border controls.

Where will it all end - who knows - but it looks grim :-(

If the moderate Muslims wish to feel more comfortable they had best start acting against the extremists in their own communities and identifying them to the authorities if they advocate or participate in violence or rebellion against society.

Muslim extremists have shown us through their actions that they will do anything to anybody - no "warriors honour" here, where violence in war is directed against warriors on the other side. They hope to demoralize by killing civilians, women and children. If they could find a nuclear weapon they would not hesitate to use it. The casualty figures we have seen (9/11 etc) would be a footnote if they can find the weapons. Until the jihadis are expelled by the moderate Muslim community, racial hate will continue to accelerate.

When I discipline my students, they accuse me of singling them out because of their race. The last time I had to meet with my principal and a student over discipline, the student accused me of singling her out because she’s Hispanic, and then trotted out the inevitable, "She's a racist." Joke is--the entire class is composed of Hispanic students--I'm the minority being racially harassed. So, not all accusations of racism are true, and it's not just non-white people who are facing racial discrimination. For some reason, we whites are not supposed to make accusations of racist attacks on us. It’s about time we did. The next time I’m faced with this type of racist slander, I’ll be the one making charges of racism.
