Or, eric #3, the MacFlannels, but you'd have to be middle-aged to understand this reference to the Radio Scotland Glasgow family of the early 1950s.

Possibly interesting, as long as it's not just a collection of Groundskeeper Willies.

• The Clan can be heard on BBC Radio Scotland on 27 December at 4:05pm.

A cartoon for the radio?? Now that's class!

8

Cretin,

19/12/2006 10:04:35

They also said we'd find Elaine C Smith and Karen Dunbar funny. Oh no, I'm not falling for this one.

9

Eddie,

An animated cartoon on the radio!

12

Hope it's better than that pi5h River City, the worst thing I have ever seen on BBC Scotland.

Oh hang on, I forgot about the Karen Dunbar show too, which is about as funny as a punch in the mouth.

Dave From Barra,

Everything you do is a balloon,

Its bound to be pish. Scottish comedy is always a bit too scottish , one thing the english are very good at is comedy, and it doesnt have to be totally english in character.

How about comedy from edinburgh or is that a misnomer ?

17

Dave From Barra,

Western Isles 19/12/2006 11:19:42

Billy Connelly? Chick Murray? To name but a few and they were/are internationally acclaimed.

18

Bert,

19/12/2006 11:37:43

Written by a guy who's credits include the Lenny Henry Show. Don't they want people to listen? If that material's anything to go by then I'd rather have a kick in the haw-maws!

19

Edinburger_J,

19/12/2006 11:42:37

No17: Misnomer? Never... Oxymoron more likely!
As for Scottish comedy, the Deliverance episode of Still Game was sheer brilliance.

20

Bram Seer,

All of Scotland 19/12/2006 11:45:40

Made by the makers of the Beechgrove, does that mean wi get flooers wi humour,a sort of Angus Og meets the hit squad on radio, noo that's clever,.... belt ra stag rather than dope up the pony...chust so! Ricky Gervais could play a sea anchor, since its on an island.
But whaes Karen Dunbar?

21

Everything you do is a balloon,

19/12/2006 12:10:23

Still game is brilliant. I got the DVD versions and they are a lot swearier than the TV variety.
My old man wasnt too cheesy about it.

22

RAVIS,

the borders 19/12/2006 12:12:28

bet it won't be as good as still game...

23

Joe M.,

If we want better Scottish programs our parliament needs power over broadcasting. Independent studies have shown that Scots get shoddy value for their licence fee.

I like cartoons like Family Guy etc so I will be interested to see what this is like.

In any case I reckon the BBC should make all their programmes available through digital for free. We've paid for them so why not give us access?

24

Krusty The Clown,

springfield 19/12/2006 13:02:05

nothing is as good as Still Game! Excellent scripts and a fantastic cast...Navid is a Legend!

jack/victor: Two Lucky Donkeys please Navid...
Navid: Two Donkeys!
hahahaha

ach well - i can hear it right in my heid!

25

Manhattan Mozart,

Can't wait to hear it. The show will come in at brunch time and we'll have haggis for the occasion.

Scrambling machine anyone

27

Bien E. Bien,

Oh no.. "Answers" to The Simpsons have always been dismal. The Simpsons are not funny because of their bad behaviour. They are funny because of the high quality writing. The former alone would be become tedious very quickly.

28

Culandun,

expat in USA 19/12/2006 17:08:39

So will we be having a few church burnings or maybe the odd massacre or two? Well, maybe we'll have just a community shunning for carrying out work on the Sabbath or even a Missionary preaching against the "Furthering the of Work of the Devil" should anybody dare to take the News of the World onto the island. Rhuck? that would be between Rhum and Muck tha?

29

Gary T,

From the article description I hope that radio show is successful and the follow-up TV program is provided to BBC America without delay.

30

Angus Mor,

God's Own Island 19/12/2006 17:10:19

As long as they sound nothing like the dreadful characters in River sh*tty, it might work but if they pull out a weegie accent you could spread on toast, I'm switching off.

31

MarkB,

19/12/2006 17:37:15

A Scottish Simpson's take-off with a "whimsical French touch"? If they broadcast it in Guantanamo, human rights groups would be talking about crimes against humanity.

32

Chuckster,

19/12/2006 19:36:34

It would take a pretty talented animator to make this come alive on the radio.

33

Edward,

19/12/2006 19:44:39

"commissioned by BBC Scotland, is the brainchild of animator Sylvain Chomet"
"The Clan is being broadcast by BBC Radio Scotland as a one-off radio pilot"
Im sure thats a contradiction! How can you animate on Radio??
Must be the easist commission the animator has ever had, one where he doesnt even have to draw a single line!
Get real BBC Scotland, if your going to do a pilot show of an animation, wouldnt it be better to have it on TV in the first place

34

Scullion,

Canada 19/12/2006 20:47:05

Edgar Bergen, the lovely Candice Bergen's father, was a ventriloquist on the radio. Hey, I think I saw his lips move...maybe not.

35

Pete39,

Tassy 19/12/2006 21:48:52

Maybe an animated conversation, that would work.

36

Jock Tamson,

Scotland, Caledonia, Alba 19/12/2006 22:34:56

As long as it isn't full of weegie "humour" I'm sure it will be very entertaining.

Ha, Ha, Ha

38

C. Taylor,

The worst Scots humor has got to be better than what we have over here: foul-mouth black guys joking about killing cops.
I can't wait to see this on BBC America!

39

Bill, Dunblane,

19/12/2006 23:47:34

I had one of the first colour radios in the country!

Getting a bit hazy now tho'. ;)

Why are so many people anticipating a disaster? Admittedly, Queen Margaret Drive is not generally known for quality television of any kind, but they do make some comedy gems now and again- is Newsnight Scotland still being shown by the BBC? I think that they should syndicate that one.

You do tend to have second rate broadcasters in Scotland and the best output comes from other parts of the United Kingdom. But I am sure that the stuff you get is still better than what many of us get in other parts of the world.

The Simpsons is commissioned by Fox, one of the worst broadcasters on the planet. So that should give you hope that perhaps the talent-less monkeys at Queen Margaret Drive have stumble across something good. It might be great. Wait and see.

The fact that it has been thought of by someone who has a solid record of producing quality entertainment can only a good thing. Maybe you guys will actually be "responsible" for some good radio/TV for a change.

Why should you be dependent on the English to produce quality TV? Stand on your "own two feet" and have some pride. It's time for the BBC England handouts to be scaled back.

Bob Incognito,

Royston Vasey 20/12/2006 09:02:00

But is this show Local enough?,without toads, the local shop(for locals only of course), evil twins, precious things, and of course a David or two, they sound as if they will allow anyone in, (even if they bring strange machines belching foul fumes into Gods clean air) I'm afraid Papa Lazarou will have to visit here and get a few wives to bring back to Royston Vasey.

43

Pinky,

20/12/2006 11:38:41

@ Joe 24 "Independent studies have shown that Scots get shoddy value for their licence fee."
That's because shan like River City gets commissioned so we miss the decent stuff that's being shown in England.

44

Vole,

20/12/2006 15:49:29

It's written my Moray "Calum Gilhooley" Hunter, so while I'm not expecting a Scottish Simpsons* I'm sure it will be ok.

* lazy journalism
