The problem with hiragana is that it is merely phonetic; it carries no meaning. And kanji is a form of art. Japan is a long way from giving up kanji, if ever. The transliteration of Japanese into a Romanised form is at best a compromise. The frankly laughable attempts of BBC newscasters to enunciate Japanese place names and personal names make this only too apparent. They never, ever got "Junichiro Koizumi" right. And "bunch of clowns" was hardly the image BBC wanted to project.
