And yet Jan 2006 there were reports of the coldest Russian winter in a generation !
see below.
The same fact is reported in the main story above. So I assume then it is climate change when we have a mild winter, also when we have a bad winter, also when the summer is too hot/wet/foggy/cold etc. No sense to it all I say!

CNN.com, Jan. 21, 2006

MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) -- Russia's coldest winter in a generation killed seven more people overnight, lifting the death toll in Moscow to 123 and putting huge pressure on the Soviet-era heating and power network.

"The Moscow energy system has never sustained such a load," Anatoly Chubais, chief executive of state electricity monopoly Unified Energy System, said on Friday.

Temperatures in the capital have plunged to a 26-year low of minus 30 Celsius (minus 22 Fahrenheit) and Chubais was quoted by RIA Novosti news agency as saying that electricity consumption hit a record on Thursday.

When the polar caps are melting its climate change, when the polar caps are hardening its climate change, when its raining its climate change, when its sunny its climate change.

If you support climate change your a good person, if you deny it your a radical and if you have no opinion you are not in touch with the seriousness of climate change.

As a race we are headed for space anyway! So why all the fuss?

It was a bit sad yesterday to read on the BBC news site that the arctic ice was at its least coverage since last year...
All under the doom and gloom banner of global warming.

And yet, read it carefully... "least coverage since last year"...
Which means theres more of it than last year and therefore a recovery surely!! hurrah!! no global warming we're heading for an ice age - the arctic ice has expanded since last year...

Its all a bloody joke... global warming and cooling is and always will be a scientific fact. Measured in terms of tens of thousands of years... we currently try to prove it with records stretching back ooooooo 110 years or so!!!

laughable science.

Vancouver actually experienced a blanket of snow a couple of weeks ago. It never usually has a 'sharp drop on the thermometer' as reported. They usually have grey blustery weather at this time of year. Get your facts right before reporting. THE END IS NIGH....not!

#3 How do you explain the holes in then ozone layer above Australia?
Maybe we should spend some money repairing it than on bombs and tanks.

Think alot of people, including world leaders, should take there head from underneath the blanket because something’s not right.
You only have to look it at pictures of L.A or Tokoyo the smock must be damaging our planet.
Surely you can see that.

God is definately angry! He and the devil had a big fall out and now the devil is melting some ice caps and god is freezing the rest.

Quite a battle!

How do you or anyone else know that holes in the ozone layer are not regular if infrequent natural occurences anyway?

We've only monitored it for 30 years so how can we assume what is and is not 'normal'?

Last thing I read about the antarctic hole was that it was actually reducing in size.

Hence my point about scientific arrogance and scaremongering over issues that in all truth we know very very little about.

That’s right, let’s just play it down probably nothing who needs to don't worry about it.
but maybe it would be a good idea to reduce greenhouse gases just in case.

Such cynicism Media. Of course all those are proof of global warming:

as Steven Guilbeault of Greenpeace puts it: "Global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter, that's what we're dealing with."
http://antigreen.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_antigreen_archiv... If Greepeace say absolutely anything is proof of onrushing catastrophe who are we to doubt.

Nonetheless I am a little surprised to be told that the Russians are worried the legendary Russian winter is not as brutal as average because it would make it easier for Hitler & Napoleon to invade!

#11: GREENPEACE! Are they not the militant ecoists who harm the planet more than they protect it by staging the most ludicrous attacks on innocent men, woman and children who do not see things the way in which they do?

I would NOT listen to a word that comes out of their mouths.

If you deem my comments as cynicism, may I reply by stating that I find yours as myopic .

"Open your eyes if not for you but for your children’s, children"

Listen mate, in my experience with kids (I have 2) its THEM and not me thats killing the planet!! Try telling a 15 year old to turn off lights/phones/computers/TV's etc etc etc
or walk to the school rather than be driven
or recycle rubbish dont just tip it all in the one bin
etcetcetc

bashing-like-brick-its-head-your-against-wall-a

re-arrange into a well known phrase.

Every generation has its 'global catastrophe' headlines - we've moved on from nuclear annhialation to death by drowning/thirst depending on which 'expert' you listen to.

GM, sorry if you don't understand what global warming does to the global climate, but it's not that easy to explain or dispel the facts. Here's a short version:
Because of global warming temperate climates turn into extreme climates - long dry hot summers, really cold long winters, a short flood season(spring) and a short dry autumn. If the season is warm it will be warmer, if it's cold it will be colder, temperatures rise or drop very fast. So you can expect a bad-ass cold to settle in Russia again this year.

In extreme dry places global warming only causes less precipitation, so in Australia and parts of Africa there's more heat, less rain (less food) and more bush fires. In time these places will turn to deserts.

Tropical regions will turn to temperate regions. So if there was just one season, a hot wet one, it will split into 2-3 seasons.

Bottom line is global warming doesn't affect directly everything, like let's say - ozone depletion - which lets in more harmful solar radiation and you get cooked in the sun really fast... no more tans, just burns.

The essential thing it affects, by melting so much ice at the poles, is the fresh water concentration in oceans. Currently ...or formerly... there was a balance between salt water and fresh water which supported the global system of oceanic currents which regulate our atmosphere and keep it the same way it was for many thousands of years - more or less (there was always a variation). The problem with so much fresh water entering the oceans is that it will sink (cold water always sinks) and slow the bottom currents, the "belt", which regulates our climate, eventually stopping them. The slower these currents become, the more extreme climate becomes.

Europe would've been an glacier if it was not for the warm mass of air provided by the ocean currents (especially from the Atlantic). Now that the currents are slowing down, the stream of regular

Dragomir,

Kyoto may be a scam, but that link doesn't disprove anything about the science. It's only a debate in political circles, in the science world there's not much that can be disproven about global warming, there's no major debate, because all research leads to the same conclusions.

Media 1,

Cape Town 15/12/2006 16:22:34

Oxygen isotope ratios show the ocean was 10° to 15° Celsius warmer 65 million years ago than it is today. For Americans who know nothing of metric units, that's 18°-27° Fahrenheit warmer than now.

Evidence of the scam and the hoax that is global warming!

I rest my case

Wasn't it Russia that claimed it had the coldest winter in 60 years last year? Give it time, the winter has only begun.

Tricia,

Living in the Northeast US has been a treat so far with the warmer weather. It isn't winter yet anyway. However, after living here for so long, I know that before the winter is over we'll be walloped with snow. Remember, climate is weather over a long period of time. People in the past had both severe and mild winters in their lifetimes too.
