Having worked in many countries from China to Thailand to the Middle East and Africa.... If I have a traffic accident or other involvement with the authorities and need a translator I am expected to provide one at my own expense.... Why should the tax payers in Scotland be expected to foot the bill.....???
It is farcical, why is it that we spoon feed every other nation in the world and they do nothing for us....

It is exactly the same in the Health Service.
An absolute scandal! I live in Spain and the police don't provide interpreters free of charge here. There are a couple of adverts on the wall of the polis station and it's up to you if you want to employ the services of an interpreter. Why should money have to be provided by the taxpayer in Scotland for this service?
Generally, it is not the individual who is requesting the need of an interpreter. but the authorities who ask for them, even when the client has good English skills, because they feel a need to cover their own backs. Just like a lot of places can't change a light bulb without the maintenance person being required to put up scaffolding and a safety net first!

Either he can show his passport (and how much English does he need to understand that much?) or the authorities should be able to assume he's illegal, not mess about on formalities at our expense. These online translators are not all they are cracked up to be dear chap, why whilst attempting to communicate with my Brazilian maid I have made many an embarrasing faux pas and we have both been left with red faces.....indeed one must be very careful...best leave it to the experts.

Some facts here, i agree that most have just jumped on the usual dumb-Brit xenophobic bandwagon. People usually manage to get around language difficulties if there's something in it for them. Thus if we want to question illegal immigrants then it's in our interest to get round the problem. As if illegal immigrant or terror suspects are gonna volutarily pay a translation bill!
Plus, backward Brits are notoriously bad with languages - even our own are neglected (Gaelic, Welsh) - so imagine how other nations feel about the thousands of ignorant Brits who descend on their shore with little or no knowledge of the local tongue. There are thousands of fat pink morons in the Costa del Sol with virtually no grasp of Spanish, whereas most forgeingers can speak at least two languages, and often speak English very well.
There are over 60 different languages spoken in Scotland. As a previous person said this is having a big effect on NHS services and all other public services around the country who are required, not just to provide interpreters but to produce all their information pamphlets in all these languages.
Its about time this farce and expense was stopped. Its diverting money from front line services.
The politicians a couple of years ago introduced the concept of ‘rights and responsibilities’ well its about time that Johnny Foreigners right to public services was dependant on him speaking English – one of his responsibilities.
A row broke out in Australia this summer, ignored by the press over here. The Oz government basically said ‘English is the language we speak here, if you don’t speak English you can f(word) off’ and one of the Oz ministers actually said that naughty word In France they produce their bumph in only one language.

As you are well aware, we in America are having the same problem. When I was young there were many immigrants and at that time most were from Eastern Europe. All of the had the same goals. 1. To learn to read and speak our language as best they could. 2. To become citizens, assimulate into our culture and adding some of their culture which made ours richer. 2. To become good citizens and contribute to the country. Most to be accepted for who they were. Today it is illegal immigration and they demand rights that they did not earn, demand that we change to their ways and I could go on. Seems like we are not the only country in this situation. Who is pulling the strings? Not America, we have seen the backlash of the Iraqi War, not Uk we see the backlash there. We cannot blame the Islamic radicals because while they are going for world domiation they are using a differant method. That leaves business going after globial economy and the leaders of the Blue Building going after world government. I would even guess both are in cohouts. The EU, possibly. We know that France likes to be the big empire and Germany is flexing their musles. Are we headed for the feet made of clay and iron? Who knows? I will say that what we see today as problems are smoke and mirrors. They are being manufactured for world demonination. Every little problem is an emergency that the government has to fix but somehow it isn't a local or nation problem but a world problem. We are being lied and manipulated big time.

Willie Winkie, I have worked all over the world too from China to Russia and the U.S.Why does this country continue to make a fool of itself??In Denmark if you dont speak Danish you do not have a hope in hell of getting a job with a normal Danish company. In Holland to claim Dutch nationality you must speak Dutch. So why on earth do we entertain people who cant speak English. If they do need translators they should be made to pay for it themselves. If they are illegal immigrants they should be promptly escorted to the nearest airport and sent home. I dont know of any other country in the world that would make the tax payer pay for such services to foreigners.
Will call centres be providing these services any time soon?
#16, not only does the United States provide translators, we also provide illegal immigrants social security, medicare, welfare checks, drivers licenses and education (in their language). In short not only they enjoy all the benefits that a tax paying citizen does, they are cattered to and don't pay taxes. It is illegal for them to vote but I would bet my last buck they do especially in Californin and the Southwest.

i too have worked all over and i rightly expect nothing from these countries.
quite simple........ the uk population has got to go into "poll-tax evasion" mode again to start to achive things and show the sucessive governments that they are not representing you as they should
everyone stop paying their tv licence or road tax! pity a census it not not due! they can't jail u all, if u get a fine u pay it slowly! maybe the unemployed can take the inititiave here they haven't got so much too loose (sorry!).
