A lot of these people were probably trained by the USA in one of their earlier 'wars for terror'.

2

'Suck' McCrunchie,

30/10/2006 09:19:59

The US originally armed Iraq too, so its hardly surprising the manuals came from there.

Reaping what you sow sadly.

3

PETERG,

30/10/2006 12:15:15

Did you read the article previous commentors? Its not a manual used in the Army, but something you buy in a magazine. Therefore it has nothing to do with who previously trained who. Typical, uneducated dopes who have an opinion formed and thefore are unable to intellectually digest what they are reading.

4

Al,

30/10/2006 12:38:43

Suck; if America armed Iraq, then why was the Iraqi army and air-force using soviet equipment? Get your facts straight.

5

sandy,

i find i very interesting that this story doesn't mention CNN. it was an "emdedded"CNN photographer & reporter that interviewed these terrorists & was given the film by them. CNN then gave "aid & comfort" to the enemy "terrorists", when they played the film of the American soldier being killed by the sniper. they then played it over & over, for effect. the family of this soldier didn't even know this, when it aired. did CNN show this in Scotland?? if so, did CNN mention the incredible outrage & backlash by the American people over this?? somehow i doubt it. shame on the "Scotsman"
for not including this in their story. what the "Scotsman",with the help of CNN, has done is helped feed the extreme anti-war, anti-America, radical jihadists loving crowd, by using this story & film of our American soldier being killed by the enemy. i would bet the family of this brave soldier will NOT get an apology from either of you.

6

Mike,

Edinburgh 30/10/2006 14:30:54

Sandy

I find it very interesting that a story like this moves you to complain about how the story was handled and the comment of the backlash and outrage of the American people when so far you have totally ignored the outrage and backlash from the American people over the way the world press has handled the build up the begining and the present state of the war in Iraq. The lies and deceipt that put us all into this war in the first place The hundreds of thousands of deaths so far and your outraged at this particular one and only because of the way it was reported.

What on earth is wrong with you woman and where are your basic human values?

7

Miss H,

30/10/2006 14:53:28

Gavin, I don't think that anybody disputes the fact that the USA aided, supported and trained militant Islamic groups when they were fighting against Soviet troops in Afghanistan. I don't think any body disputes that many of these people are now involved in Iraq. So those are not uneducated opinions even though you may not like them.

Stay with the story. Good job Sandy.

Stay with reality and not bias rhetoric. And why dont you also try and find a neo con statement you dont agree with.

Gavin 3

In my days in the military training manuals were classified documents and should not be up for public viewing this goes beyond carelessness and into the realms of treason.

10

mike - across the pond,

across the pond - mike #9 30/10/2006 18:59:46

can you read...

the "manual" was written by a RETIRED Major AFTER he got out... and is available from ONLINE BOOKSTORES

so I'm not quite sure what youre complaining about

on "classified" material and the Freedom of Information Act.... training materials are NOT generally classified unless they are related to classified hardware or have national security implications...

this relates to security by obscurity... if the US government classifies something then ANYONE can pettition for a copy of it under the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT... The government may or may not honor all or part of your request based on a review of the sensitivity of the material and its classification.... however, if the government doesnt classify it then in this case your response from the government will be "it's not classified, and not our materail, go get it on your own"

11

Steve here,

30/10/2006 19:22:47

Somehow I find it hard to believe that snipers are a new or an American invention. This is just another tactic to demoralise the troop. Mike, as far as i know training manuals are still classified, this is just some propaganda flick to wind up joe public. I think the real tragedy is the troops are becoming more and more like sitting ducks...soldiers should NOT be used as policemen. I blame this current situation on the BUSH/BLAIR team's total lack of planning. This war should have not been started, and especially not by these numpties.

12

Steve here,

30/10/2006 19:35:02

BTW these so called "jihad super snipers" will end up being short work for the real and highly trained coalition snipers. This is just another headline for the press, we won't see any headlines when this problem is solved by the troops, and it will be, that's where real training (not some crap video) pays off.

13

sandy,

USA 30/10/2006 20:18:45

#6-mike--i find it very interesting that a story like this DOESN'T move you!! as to the rest of your post,
it's not worth a response for there is no truth to it.
you should go to church & thank god every day that it wasn't some crazed Scotsman instead of the radical islamic jihadists that ran those planes into the WTC-Pentagon-Pennsylvania & killed 3,000 innocent souls, for we'd have sent the affects of the 101st Airborne your way, instead of Afghanistan & Iraq.

14

sandy,

USA 30/10/2006 20:23:33

BTW--CNN solicited those films. they e-mail the terrorists & told them they(cnn) would treat them(terrorists) fairly if they gave them the tapes. they actually had the e-mail address of these murderers.

15

sandy,

USA 30/10/2006 20:29:23

#13...pure crap.....find somewhere else to relieve your bile...I find your scenario of US combat troops fighting their Scots allies on Scottish soil highly offensive! You're over the top, get help or medication.

17

Mike,

Edinburgh 30/10/2006 20:40:30

13 Sandy

They would probably have got lost on the way at least the lucky ones would have.

10 Mike

In the Uk forces all training manuals are classified at least to restricted level and every member of the armed forces has to sign the official secrets act which is supposed to be valid for 25 years after the date of signing. I think the same rules apply to US personnel. So even if this trainer of terrorists was retired he is still subject under the US equivilant of the official secrets act not to discuss his work or to provide details of such to anybody not classified to see or hear it.
If the document was not classified then we have to wonder about the competancy of this present administration or its armed forces.

You should not be throwing words around like blinded and hate as accusations because those are the fundamental foundations of Neo Conservatists all over the world.

#16--steve--it is an interesting scenario, don't you think?

Behave yourself I nearly choked on my porridge.
When did you develope a sense of humour?

21

Steve here,

30/10/2006 21:41:28

No, sandy, i don't think it's a scenario I would ever want to contemplate, it's too close to home for me on both sides of the pond. As I remember it, we (NATO) went to war in Afghanistan because US soil was attacked and the Taliban would not give up the perpetrators of 9/11. OK, that was justifiable, but the UK has an extradition treaty with the USA so the US would not need to use force if such an event were to emanate from Scotland. And the horrible scenario of US and British troops fighting each other is beyond anything that should posted here, REMEMBER the we are allies! And if you will remember, it was a Scot that called for NATO to come to the aid of the USA after 9/11.

Mike, Iraq is just a total cock up, i wish somehow the politicos got the idea that they might just want to listen to the field commanders and find a way out of the mistake. I hate this war, F****n stupid. Makes me sick to think of the lads over there getting picked off by insergents when they should nea be there in the first place.

The use in the US of snipers goes all the way back
to the Revolutionary War,if your all that intrested
in the subject, however both the Russians and the
Germans were the leaders in WW2 in using
snipers,as the US Army had even stopped their
training them, and had to play catch up,while the
US Marine Corps had maintained it's own Scout &
Sniper Platoons in every Marine Division, and the
fact remains some of these Terrorists could have
even got sniper training from a number of other
countries, beside the US as well, however some of
these books on sniping and even bootleg copies of
various US Military Manuals on Snipers are all also
easily available in the US both on line and in
places like Police Supply Stores and our so-called
"Spy Stores" as well,if this helps any one here, along
with the fact that you bet snipers do instill a bit
of terror into the enemy! But this all only the words
of an ex-US Army & Law Enforcement Type whose
sharing this with ya'll here now,okay?...

34

mike - across the pond,

across the pond - edinburgh mike #'s 9 & 17 31/10/2006 14:30:17

seeing that the book was written in 1993... so you can be torqued off at "the administration" but it would be a hand wringing democrat who would have been at the helm.... not the current administration...

I'm not quite sure you understand that being a "sniper" is a skill... you can train all you want, but if you cant hit the target... well you yourself are just a well educated target... waiting to be dispatched with extreme predjudice...

35

sandy,

USA 31/10/2006 15:38:33

#34--Mike,(ac-t-p)--a well educated target--"waiting to be dispatched with extreme predjugice"
you do have a way with words. good one!!!
may i use it if needed??

36

dr_ercu_,

sniping is a cowardly act,
he was supposed to use a knive

37

james,

England 01/11/2006 10:45:58

When it comes to snipers . during the Korean war. i have seen a few chinese and North Korean snipers who were deiberately shot on the spot. irrelevant if they surrender or when caught. that is the cofrontation between the better-equipped sniper and the ordinary soldier. no doubt this happens in every war. during the military conflict with the IRA. 5 British soldiers were killed by a sniper no doubt if he was caught he would have been dispatch quickly to hell. and rightly so.

38

Mike,

Edinburgh 02/11/2006 21:58:53

Mike 34

One American administration is more or less like another they are all bought off by the same corporate interests.
The book may have been written in 1993 but I bet it didnt reach the public domain until much later.

'It was update this year for todays global war on terror according to Maj Plaster'

And the snipers in this story seem to be hitting their targets which is why there is a story in the first place.

No wonder you people voted for Bush.
