I know your population is falling, but is this not desperate?

The projects are led by Professors Wilmut and Minger....Does anyone else feel a Karen Dunbar style joke coming on?

Well for anyone who has read the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, it is obvious that sometime in the future they will blend animal and human embryos. Just joking.

Is it bloody April 1st or what! This is revolting and turns my guts. Gawd knows what these barmy scientists are up to and what they have already got lurking in test tubes in the lab. I wouldnt be suprised if some of them have a secret basement that the wife and waens aint allowed in.

The scientists are also looking at the possibility of creating similar "chimera" embryos by mixing human and cow genes. The aim is to find a ready source of "human" embryonic stem cells without the ethical problems of tampering with human life.

This does not rest well in the eyes of many people. They are "forced" (and I use the word loosely) to creat hybrids to get around the ethics of tampering with human life, however, now they will be tampering with animal life, which, to some people, is just as important, if not more so judging by the militant animal activists.

Like Doreen, I find the whole thing disturbing and reminiscant of many a sci fi book I have read. I realise that all science is borne of mans imagination but mans imagination contains some very disturbing pitctures indeed.

This experimentation isn't new. The young girls of Dundee are well known to go like bunnies!!!

It's *which* 0.1% I'm worried about. Are we going to see humans with extra-long ears, bunny tail, huge feet? ;p)

Dave,
The East Neuk don't have liberal lassies, it is still governed by the fear of witch burnings.

AJ,

As for the rabbit/human experiments - we can't bury our heads in the sand!!! :-)

Billy,

We could if we had a few ostrich genes.

16

Billy,

Gene therapy should concentrate on eradicating violent behaviour and addictive urges ie alchohol.
Imagine the transformation in society then .

17

Ploppy,

Naewhar 06/10/2006 14:45:37

Ever seen a violent alcoholic rabbit?

18

Billy,

I think human and bunnie hybreds are a great idea.
a man could choose a wife who would really hop to it when told to do the dishes.

As a scientist I find this experiment disturbing and the logic questionable. As a human being I find it appalling and the logic extremely transparent. It is the "mad scientist syndrome" that caused me to join the Int'l Association of Bioethics and the Union of Concerned Scientist. I simply cannot see where this type of experimental technique is beneficial to anyone or anything. Personally I am for human enhancement especially where it helps those are afflicted or disabled but this rings of Science Gone Wild!
