Have people never heard of Linux?

So Tesco takes some shareware software, badges it and sells it for £20?????
It's still going to be the same software you can download free from the net.

Tesco are being allowed to seduce an unsuspecting public into being beholding to them.

If this corporation isn't tethered then within 10 years we will all be in its clutches as there will be no competition. Then God help us.

Seems like a great idea for a variety of reasons.
1)more competition to drive down the high prices
2)more choice which is extremely limited
3)good if British companies can start competing rather than leaving it to the US companies in an industry that has been a license to print money.

As for the comments above like use linus. Linux is an operating system not a competitor to the software that Tesco is apparently going to be launching. Linux on the pc is limited and mainly going to be techies not the mass market who would be the target audience of Tesco.

As for Open Office tried it and did not like it. That is where giving some customer choice is the key.

From my experience software is generally of a poor standard and anything can improve it would be good. Altough i am talking about more business and development type software.

There is a good chance that the Tesco software will be a variation of Open Office, with the Tesco Logo added, just like Star Office.

Open Office may be seen as a poor relative of Microsoft - and Apple - but is produced by volunteers, with little or no big industry backing....AND IT'S FREE.

I boycott tesco anyway- can see their software being too Microsoft compatible

everyone go buy tesco shares NOW. Soon there will be Tesco hotels and space travel. Get on the bandwagon before it is too late! Seriously i don't see the problem - if the product is good it would seem that £20 is a complete bargain compared to Mr Gates... And what is wrong with a "Tesco Town"? if folk wanted they would still be shopping in the high st...but the hight st in Inverschneckie is full of clothes stores not grocery stores, like every town centre!

I don't know why everybody seems to enjoy knocking Tesco - I guess you must all be too young to remember how awful grocery shopping was in Scotland before they moved here, in the days of grubby, expensive Co-op shops, where half the produce was in the stockroom rather than on the shelves because the surly staff couldn't be bothered putting it on sale.
And prices were sky high, shops closed for an hour-and-a-half at lunch time, slammed their doors in your face at 5pm prompt, didn't open on Saturday afternoons, far less Sunday, and felt that the world owed them a living.
Well, I can remember those days - and I like Tesco - their shops are clean, they have a huge range of products available for sale, no more trudging about in the rain from shop to shop with a heavy shopping bag, their prices are highly competitive, their staff are pleasant and helpful, and they offer all sorts of small but important extra servies - like clean instore toilets, like a disabled toilet in their stores, a customer service department where, if you've bought cut flowers as a present, they'll re-wrap them free, they offer help packing and taking shopping out to your car if you need it, and even offer to help you shop if you're trying to go round one of their stores with somebody disabled in a wheelchair.

So I say congratulations Tesco, you've earned every penny of your profits, you offer an excellent shopping experience, and long may you continue to expand!

Once you have discovered Free Open Source Software (FOSS), you won't think that the Tesco stuff is cheap!

Neil 14, the alternative to getting rid of the multinational retailers is not going back to the grocers shops of the mid 20th C, it's about providing more choice, more retailers, creating more competition, giving more options and freedom of choice to the public. Its about improving life.

At present there are about a dozen men in this country who decide what the nation eats. That 'eating' involves the over consumption of processed, fat and chemical laden rubbish which are the main causes of most of the illnesses and premature deaths (including cancer and heart disease) suffered by the good people of our nation.

It has to end, before it ends us.

I am relieved to hear that others are coming on to the software OS market. My concern is that when downloading or making purchases some operators accept only MS as the OS and won't accept Linux so one wonders if Tesco will be acceptable internationally.

Panda anti-virus software, tomorrow, a tesco OS, budget flights to mars with extra reward points, but none if you take a plastic bags. Nothing makes sense as this panda is already FOSS. Nell 14 It was Safeways that changed the way shopping took place in Scotland then tesco took over william lows (dundee) the rest is history. Check out "Wal-mart is evil" crap jobs, chinese goods everywhere, no local produce, pressure on suppliers, sells at a loss to force out competition, but they failed in Germany ......
